1 hour of ReCore gameplay with Major Nelson and Joseph Staten

The fact that a lot people in this thread are surprised to see Staten's name involved really reinforces what I said in the impressions thread.

It is just me or this game is not been pushed by MS at all?

Beyond having Inafune and the guys that spawned Metroid Prime, you got Joseph fucking Staten and there's no mention of this... AT ALL!?

He's been doing interviews for the game since e3, and I think we've known about his involvement since even before that. But yeah, they should have definitely used his name a bit.

It also should be noted that they were playing on PC, though we don't know what they were running on (I believe the demos at gamescom was a 1060).

I can't watch either video but how come the reactions to the 15-minute demo in the other thread and this stream are so wildly different? I was getting worried that the game would be a big disappointment from the reactions in that other thread but this thread is something else.

Fingers crossed the game turns out good.

isn't that 15 minutes demo from the same dungeon that got shown like a million times?

The only real difference is that people saw the overworld (which they mentioned a good number of times...Staten himself). Everything else seems more of the same. People just didn't get to be told what's going on so they didn't infer a lot of the things that were being showed.

To me, it's not exactly what I thought based on the cinematic video but after the first gameplay I was excited and it never died down. I hope it's really good and people buy it so we can have a new franchise on our hands (granted I still want a QB sequel...luckily MS owns the IP and we don't have to wait for Remedy).

You have somebody explaining the setup of the story, the game systems and mechanics, and utilizing all of it while playing. Also the game is much more polished and they show the semi open world ness of it.

First, there's someone narrating the gameplay here, which actually helps expose mechanics that were hidden in other demos. For example, the extractor turns out to be something you have to actively manage when pulling open doors, as opposed to just a button press. There's also more explanation of things like the cores and frames and how you can use them/upgrade them/etc. The environment is also a lot more varied than the 15-minute demo, which to me looked like the same generic-future-industrial room copypasta'ed a bunch of times.

I have this pre-ordered on Xbox One retail due to E3 sales ($28 CAD!), but I'm not sure if it would be better to cancel and wait for a sale (or a Steam release please!). Still, this looks alright, and my history with these types of under-the-radar games has generally been good. I really liked Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and Remember Me, for example.

Yeah sure, but I mean, the main selling point of ReCore has been: “Hey, it's made by Keiji and the creators of Metroid Prime”.

One would think this being a console exclusive to MS they would emphasize the fact that one the main guys behind Halo under Bungie wrote the story for this game.

But oh well, I've been excited since tje first reveal and still am. Can't wait for next week!

Joe was great and it his involvement that has kept me interested, but man the animations look cheap, she moves so suddenly mid cycle that it seems like she just misses a few frames of animation. Looks incomplete, really really hope the game scores well so I can overlook this, but Metroid Prime was so damn polished that even witnessing Samus clutch her beam rifle got me feeling as if I'm experiencing the Bugatti of gaming mechanics. It felt so damn good just to move and shoot.

I don't see any of that here :(

That's the best showing of the game so far.

I like the idea of having to mix things up on the fly when different coloured enemies are coming at you at once. Its also an aful lot bigger than I thought it was going to be.

Looking forward to playing it next week.

I think they prioritized control and responsiveness over animation fluidity, which to me is the best choice.

It's unacceptable that they're showing this game in its best form mere days before release via an obscure Twitch stream. I mean what the actual fuck. Why isn't this demo out for the press instead of the other one?

I don't think there would be much of a difference with Polygon.

But why does it matter? Not every game needs to be hyped up with tons of advertisements and YouTube videos. Let some games fly under the radar. They tend to be appreciated a little better, and get some really solid reviews.

Watched the whole stream and I'm pretty excited now. I hope it works out for MS, because I'd like to see them take more risks like this.

It matters because the more games like this sell, better are the chances of us seeing more of them. It doesn't need tons of ads, just don't hold the best showing of the game the until the last minute and then present it via some obscure stream people won't watch because they're not hyped for your game in the first place.

What you said doesn't make any business sense whatsoever. And this game is not really under the radar, you might be under that impression because Microsoft has been really incompetent in showing it properly since E3.

The game looks "really" nice. This is another example of how much they can get out of the Xbox One hardware...these upcoming games look so good its almost hard to believe they can do this on such hardware. AMD hardware and Dx12 API is a nice match for squeezing the most out of console hardware.

Ok, that looked at least interesting. Still waiting on reviews and impressions but am more optimistic. Shame the jumps and dashes look so awkward.

Looks decent. Ill grab this..maybe not day 1 but soon after release. Main character design is awesome! And the campaign according to staten is quite lengthy which is another plus.

Like you can't have both lol

At extremes you can't. If you value control response at some point you have to cut your animation short instead of having a transition. One example is Ryse, the animations themselves are really good, but they can all be canceled at any time which ultimately gives a more responsive combat in expense of more "gamey" animations.

Edit: The problem with recore is that the animations are indeed bad by themselves, like the ones you would expect from a 1st person game when viewed in 3rd person XD

I'm sold. Watched just a few moments and Staten did the job. So happy he's back doing creative work as MGS. Hopefully this game will meet and/or exceed expectations because there's a market for AA games, if you will.

This demo was done on a PC for "ease of steaming." I'm sure that it being the best-looking version had nothing to do with it.

Yeah, I was more or less in "gee I hope this is good" mode, but now I'm convinced it's gonna be solid. Will probably still wait for reviews, but barring truly terrible issues, I'm on board.

Wow, this video was night and day compared to the last video I saw. I was actually pissed at how bad and basic the game seemed, but it's clearly way more nuanced than it looks. I still think animations are way too janky for a game being released in 2016, but I've got no problems giving it a shot now.

This video has me beyond hyped.

That combat, the boss, the exploration, the Prime influences my god.

The fact that those shiny disco cores are from bosses/mini bosses, and there was a locked door worth 45 disco cores puts my mind about length at ease. I'm gonna be happy with ~10 hours and this looks like it could be around that time.

Can't wait to play this!! Just hope that the dungeons are interesting and fun.
