1 Up Show = Best New Internet Thing

There are scripted moments in the show, and lots of improvisation of course, but it's slowly starting to all meld together.

We can't please everyone, but then again, that's not our goal. ;) Still, it's fucking awesome most of you love it, so keep the feedback coming. Thanks for watching.
So how much ends up on the cutting room floor?

I only watched the recent 1Up show with MGS3:S info, but I like their podcasts a lot better. The show seems like it is trying to force a "casual" appearance. Don't much care for idle discussion between editors (this game is cool! that game is cool!) or the self-indulgent comedy bits with Mielke bossing interns around. Maybe it was a slow week or something, and that's why a lot of it seems to be so much roundabout banter. Focused discussion, event coverage, and interviews are cool -- I wondered why there was so little 360 Japan/Peter Moore stuff and so much geeking out over how cool Kojima is. If we are going to chain ourselves to G4 related comparisions, it's too much like X-Play, too little like G4 E3 Coverage . :)

Podcasts (which I've been listening to for a while now) seem more focused and less contrived.

Also, that one girl that was smoking outside with Mielke has a great radio voice. She should be on NPR.

I think we should have an online petition for a white t-shirt spray down of that hot girl that was smoking in the August episode? Milkman can of course do the honors? :D

This show is nearly perfect. Know what it needs? More Kohler. It's severely lacking in Kohler, which is why you're completely failing to pull in the tween girl demographic.

That's Jane Pinckard isn't it? She plays guitar and keys (I think) for Dealership. Isn't her first name actually Miyuki or something to that extent?

Personally I've liked the show so far. I've never really cared for 1up or EGM because I'm not into game reviews or anything but the show has kind of a different purpose. When everyone was talking about Subsistence I got a lot better idea of what the online mode was all about. Plus the developer interviews are always great, and always seem to coincide with what and who we're talking about on GAF.

The little acting parts and stuff are really just there to give the show some direction. I'd rather witness Mielke bumping Beastie Boys tracks in his office to get an idea of what kinda dude he is before he starts blabbin on about MGS3 and 4.

Plus it's freaking FREE! and streams really fast!

Also fuck "fart" I hate everything you've ever said on this board. Go to hell.

Che, when can we expect the "MGS3 SP camera comperasion" ?

Sorry, that didn't make it into the episode and now that it's in the can, I'm not sure if we'll do it in the future either. :)

My question is, what exactly do you want compared? Or what don't you understand about the singleplayer camera? Think Splinter Cell, sans the "over the shoulder" firing/strafing mechanism, but with a more RE4-like stand-aim-and-fire control scheme. Or you can still run around in third person and fire your gun like in previous MGS games (a particular nuance of the MGS gameplay that I've never cared for, anyway), except now the camera is free roaming. Ever played Ninja Gaiden Black? Yeah, same thing.

Edit: That's RE-like FIRST PERSON stand-aim-and-fire control scheme, in case you misunderstand what I said above.

So is it supposed to be funny or serious?

That's a good question and one that we really try not to answer ourselves when we make the show. What usually happens is that Jane, Ryan and I will sit around and brainstorm a bunch of excuses to talk about a handful of games we want to cover per episode. And if we come up with something funny, we throw it in there, knowing full well that it's a dry, intimate, insider-style sense of humor that not everyone's gonna get -- but then that's why there are the more substantial gaming roundtables and plenty of direct feed.

There are scripted moments in the show, and lots of improvisation of course, but it's slowly starting to all meld together.

Honestly, I think you guys should just focus on what you do best - video games. None of this scripted stuff. Just focus on what content you want to provide, and brainstorm what you're going to cover before it ends up on the final product.

Like... it was stupid when the whole 1UP crew ran to the new X360 and gawked at it for two minutes. On top of that, Sl1p is the worst actor ever. :/

It seems like you guys are a creative and energetic bunch as it is. Just focus on providing the best damn information possible, and all of my woes will be settled.

Well, if the 1UP Show really is the source of all your woes, there's an easier solution to all of that. :)

But seriously, I know what you mean. We're doing what we want to do and we're having fun with it. We get a ton of requests for nothing but the office antics. And then we get feedback like yours or border's above who want nothing but straight up, no frills, set-piece, perfect lighting, On The Spot-style reporting on "the hottest games." Of course, we're neither here nor there, so we're just gonna keep doing what we do and try to keep it as real as possible. This also goes for the choice of games we cover too. Sure, there's been a ton of Xbox 360 coverage, but that's what we're personally interested in. I really want the show to reflect what the office is into at the moment (e.g., Wipeout Pure DLC), not what's hot on the charts or whatever.

I guess you have never been around a bunch of editors when a brand new game system comes out.

I remember when the N64 came in @ the Gamefan offices. The same thing that 1Up did, happened at Gamefan and everyone just had their mouth wide open in the utter shock of true next gen.

Until you are around something like that, you will never understand why they did what they did.

Yes I know how it works, I'd just like to see a comparision in how you run through the jungle enviroments in single-player, how it feels like. I thought it was a feature of the 1up metal gear blowout so that's why I asked.

If you want a MGS3:S comparison camera thingy, just watch the E3 2005 trailer...
Since I still have to beat MGS3 (backlog) I'd rather not get spoiled. (I heared that trailer had some spoilers in it)

TGS 2005 trailer has spoilers. E3 2005 trailer does not (well you might want to skip the last part of the trailer...other than that, it doesnt really spoil anything)

I dont want just fucking videogame info. Thats for the fucking geeks. I want some god damned personality to set 1up apart from all those 80000000000000000000000 other sites I can get the same fucking info from any time of the day.

Im here to be informed AND entertained.

I'd hope that maybe you guys could start focusing on games that you know, aren't Kojima this or Miyamoto that. It's almost like it has to be the numero uno title that gets covered. Which is great, and kind of makes sense, but uh--how many more 1up shows are going to be about Konami? My guess quite a few.

Like a feature on Tekken or something. And I know 1up is all love-love with all things Team Ninja, but doing a feature on Tekken won't kill off Dead or Alive you know ;p

Other than that, you keep saying "give us feedback" but I personally think you've got it down well. Start getting too much feedback and you'll just shoot yourselves in the foot. Make the show how you're making it, fuck the haters and appreciate the many fans is what I say. Keep it up!

I really, really like the 1up show. And the somewhat less-than-professional talk helps the case, because REAL PEOPLE USE HEDGING in conversation and TV people do not. I can imagine when I'm watching the show that these are my friends that I wish I had, and they recorded their conversations about games for me because they think I'm a cool guy and didn't want me to miss out.

I'm becoming a total 1up fanboy. Stupid internet people being cool and writing cool things and shit.

Some honest feedback...

I watched one, and I thought it was well put together, great quality (when it comes to the camera and feed over the 'net), it covered a topic I was interested in, and surprisingly lengthy and not a tiny clip.

But I saw a few threads pimping new episodes, and frankly I was turned off from checking them out because the episode I saw was sort of drawn out, and I felt that I couldn't afford to spend my time watching the whole episode I'd rather read the thread reactions and got all the info from that instead.

I'm going to watch the latest one now...simply because now that I think about it, it may be the future of "gaming TV". Who knows? There could be a future where a whole collection of fan-made shows are popping up on the internet, enough to create an online "channel" if you will considering they are all on the same topic.

Dear WordofGod,

Give me a fucking break.

Love,
Nick

MrAngryFace,
No, you're here because you want to be here. And yes, I will keep watching the show. I was merely throwing out a few suggesstions to make the show better. Deal with it.

P.S. It isn't the "source" of all my woes, Che. You threw that word in to be witty. <3

I was actually going to say that the show is annoyingly Gamefan-ish, but that is way too harsh. The problem is not that the people on the staff are geeks, it's just the geeky vanity of it all. Go crazy at the release of a new system, but don't waste people's time showing yourself going crazy.

I watched all 9 episodes today to see what the hubub was all about. Good work 1up, just keep doing what you're doing and i'll keep watching.

Hmm, perhaps "woes" wasn't quite the word you were looking for then. Maybe "complaints" ?

i finally got around to watching the xbox summit thingie, I had no idea ken lobb was a gaffer. I searched for his name in the mod panel though and couldnt find a screen name :/ so i guess he just kinda browses it.

Edit: sitnkles is bald!

edit: and don't give me that picture of the dude saying "thats, like, your opinon, man."
I find it more annoying that Major Nelson and all of his guest seem to have the English capibilities of a third grader. They always answer questions with "so..." which I think is the single dumbest thing one can do to butcher the English language. I am convinced that Allard and Moore are the only guys on the Xbox team who know how to speak English correctly.

Are you by any chance a disgruntled English teacher? :)

No, just a guy who like to see the evolution of the population progress in a positive manner. Something like:

Question: Will the Xbox 360 have a DVI connector in the future?

Answer: So the Xbox already has a VGA adapter and we think that is adequate.

Just sounds really stupid. And everyone and I mean everyone on his podcasts speaks that way.

Hey, kettle? Yeah. You got a little... I don't know, some kind of dark stuff on you. No, still there.

Oh well. Don't listen to 'em if it gets your panties in a bunch then :D

Not to be rude, but expecting high quality productions from Major Nelson are always gonna let you down....

1up show has been pretty good, didn't like the Kojima episode though, seemed pretty lame to me :\

What I DO want from 1up is a weekly video containing about 1 1/2 minutes of footage from EVERY new video, preview or review game from EVERY console, simply put in as a clips package. Watching the last few episosde of the 1up show made me realise I haven't looked up almost ANYTHING on the Xbox 360. The video they had in it of PD0 was the first I had downloaded for the game. I hadn't seen anything about CTC either until the video.

Having a clip collection like that would get a lot of smaller games, and other games in general, a good look at. I hadn't seen anything on MGS3:S, and didn't realise it had multiplayer until the video either.

THIS would be awesome, and should be done, dammit! :(

I've just watched a couple of episodes... and I like it.

The MGS stuff was cool, although some of the sound levels were a bit off.

Just keep doing it the way it is, don't X-Play it or any of that shit. For a free weekly show, it's pretty fucking good.

Thanks.

The thing I like the best about the 1UP Show so far is the interviews. It's great that it seems more casual like a friendly conversation, not much spin going on. Peter Moore holding a beer while joking about the EGM review, acknowledging the "retard pack", etc. Ken Lobb talking about GAF, EA getting called out on the target renders and stuff like that. It's different then what we usually see and that's pretty cool. All that needs to be done now is get Itagaki on the show and ask him a bunch of questions that will drive every single fanboy nuts.

I'd like to see a bit more news tidbits or roundtable discussions though (maybe 5 minutes per episode?).
