Go! Go! Go!

My Secret 15 (no artist/band repeats allowed to make it more interesting, because if not, it would consist of like 4 Beatles albums, 3 or 4 from Paul Simon or Simon and Garfunkel and 3 from Neva Dinova):

Paul Simon - Paul Simon (Duncan, Run that Body Down, and Peace Like a River - all classics beyond comparison)

Sneaker Pimps - Bloodsport (Grazes is in my top 10 favorite songs ever, Sick, M'aidez, and Small Town Witch are all awesome, though)

Midnight Oil - Blue Sky Mining (skipless album, quintessential political 1990 pop before U2 started caring. I know every word, every intonation, and every nuance of this album. I could sing it in my sleep. My favorite song as a child was River Runs Red, but it isn't even my third or fourth favorite on the album now. Anarctica, Bedlam Bridge, and One Country make me weep tears of joy and send shivers throughout my body :) )

The Beatles - Sgt. Peppers (the unskippable album. includes a human feat greater than Penicillin, electricity, and the automobile combined...A Day in the Life)

Coldplay - Parachutes (Never mind Yellow, which I probably would listen to if it hadn't gotten completely overplayed on the radio, the rest of this album is an incredible feat that has led me to hate nearly everything else that they have produced, for it being a shadow of the worst moments of Parachutes)

They Might Be Giants - Flood (perfect quirky pop music that is catchy as it is perfectly long-lasting. I wouldn't even think about skipping even on of these short flashes of brilliance)

Neva Dinova - Neva Dinova (These guys will never get their due, but they are amazing. This album is no better than their other two, but it is their first and includes some of my favorite songs by the band. Dances Fantastic, Jesus' Choir, Brooklyn, Lucifer's Lament, and Anita are incredibly incredible!)

Elliott Smith - Figure 8 (nerds, posers, and scenesters wrote off this album for being too commercial. Those people are complete idiots. This album is straight up amazing. Happiness is in my top 20 of all time, Color Bars, LA, Can't Make a Sound, and Junk Bond Trader are awesome as well)

The Cure - Disintegration - (Lullaby, Lovesong, Fascination Street, and Closedown (awesome instrumental) are classics)

Radiohead - OK Computer (No need to argue this one. Fitter Happier is obviously not good, but it isn't a song, so it doesn't detract from the experience)

The Unicorns - Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone (perfect album and the best album with the most consistent theme throughout)

Talk Talk - Laughing Stock (chill out and enjoy. I seriously hope you already have heard this one)

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (just purchased this album for the third time and I know exactly why, it is amazing! The Great Gig in the Sky gives me chills!)

Paul McCartney - Ram (Still McCartney's best solo work)

Nada Surf - Let Go (thank you, RedDwarf (I think, could have been another lovely Gaffer) who put Killians Red on a mix for me! This album is amazing and has grown on me an immeasurable amount in the past 7 years. BTW, Killians Red is in my top 10. Other amazing songs from this album include Blonde on Blonde, La Pour Ca, and Paper Boats. The last is so asinine and ridiculous in its lyrics, but just makes me feel good inside)

U.N.K.L.E. - Psyence Fiction - (I saw the music video for Rabbit in your Headlights when this album first came out and immediately went out and bought it. I couldn't believe how incredible the whole album turned out to be! Guest vocalists include Badly Drawn Boy, Mike B from Beastie Boys, Thom Yorke from some one-hit wonder band, amongst others! awesomeness!)

Bloodsport?..... Bloodsport? Without the sexy voice of the chick from the Becoming X album, the Sneaker Pimps are just no good.

I have you to thank for Talk Talk, thanks Kev. :)

And from the looks of it, we have extremely similar tastes. Except Aphex Twin. His selected ambient works volume 2 is DREADFUL. I would take Richard D James, Come to Daddy, I Care Because You Do, or Selected Ambient Works 85-92 any day. :)

I consider Hail to the Thief to be Radiohead's second best album and damn near perfect. Still cant figure out, to this day, how people think In Rainbows is better.

On the Aphex front I can totally understand someone not diggin SAI-II. It's distant, non-music made for shut-ins. Still, it's great background music for any artistic endeavour. Also, I was blasting Ageispolis in my car the other day while driving through Compton and I got legitimate nods.

...and is it really that uncommon to listen to albums straight through? That's practically all I do.

I wish I could say I always do, but it is the norm, even songs I sometimes dislike, I hate to disrupt the flow of the band or artist I am listening to. I like to hear it like they wanted it heard. It makes me appreciate the songs I love that much more.

There are some albums I own that regrettably have some standouts mixed in with complete garbage, though.

My listening habits are as follows:

iPod shuffle is running, here-to-thereing - it's a mix of up-tempo, atmospherics, and weirder stuff

at home, when I'm writing or otheriwse - it's only albums

AND new stuff, I always take it in full. There's really on other way.

There's tons of albums I can listen to and enjoy from start to finish, so this was hard, but I picked out the ones I come back to the most.

Also, pictures.

Radiohead - In Rainbows
I can listen to all of their albums through, however this one is completely flawless and just the perfect length imo.

Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf
Like speeding through the dessert in a big truck. Perfect music to listen to while road tripping. Rocks hard too.

Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
All killer, no filler. An amazing accomplishment considering it's a double album. Most variety of all their abums too so never sounds samey.

Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
Revolutionary. Every lyric, beat, sample is perfect and fits together like a puzzle. Flows like water from beginning to end (dirty, grimy water).

Slint - Spiderland
Perfect Post-Rock. Reminds me of a dark miserable night in the rain, yet is somehow strangely beautiful. Perfect music to unwind to at night.

The Prodigy - Fat of the Land
Non stop banging beats. Perfect to listen to in the gym, or for the warm up tequilla slamming before a messy night out.

Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction
Another album that is the perfect length. No tracks outstay their welcome, everything is catchy without grating, and you just hurtle through it singing and air guitaring lol. Awesome singles too.

Tool - Lateralus
Absolutely epic. Sounds like it was created in space, and is so layered that you will still be picking things up 20 or 30 listens in. Strangely hypnotic too.

Nas - Illmatic
I've never been to Queens, never even been to NY, but thanks to this album I feel like I have. Every track sets a scene, tells a tale, and just takes you on a journey. Story telling through poetry.

Massive Attack - Mezzanine
Oh man. This album sound like an ominous cloud that floats into your room and infects your brain. Once it gets in there you can't help but surrender to its hypnotic power. Textured, and deep. Midnight listening.

Pulp Fiction - Official Soundtrack
Absolute genius. The perfect soundtrack. So many different genres and styles yet somehow it all fits together so perfectly. I love every single track, and it introduced me to many different artists and styles of music.

Metallica - Master of Puppets
My favourite metal album. Awesome riffs throughout, great drumming, and some beautiful guitar work. This album showed me what metal could be.

Soundgarden - Superunknown
I loved/love 'grunge'. Soundgarden aren't even my favourite of those bands (I prefer Alice in Chains, Nirvana and The Smashing Pumpkins overall), however this album is perfect. Every track is mind-blowing, and I find this has stood the test of time better than some of the other albums from the genre.

The Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
A staggering achievement. I can't believe it, but I can sit and play each CD front to back (that’s 28 tracks!) and I like every single track. There's enough variety between the tracks to stop the sound from grating, and I think the fact that there are lots of different layers and textures in the tracks helps as well.

Nirvana - Unplugged in New York
This album has a lot of sentimental value for me for multiple reasons. It's definitely my favourite Nirvana album, and it conjures up a lot of emotion and memories every time I listen. Once I start I find it difficult to turn off.

To be honest though there are probably another 50+ albums that I can put on the list.
I often listen to albums right the way through. These 15 just came to mind first.

So how do you know what it sounds like before you buy it?

If an album has 10 amazing songs and 2 shit songs you won't buy it?

I think thats what itunes is for.

But if you cant listen to an entire album without skipping songs, then its a shitty album.

About half of my music listening is done on vinyl, so I guess every album I own on vinyl.

Actually I think that an album gets better, or at least you get a better understanding of the album, when you listen to it from the first track to the last. There's really a lot of thought put in to the order of the tracks etc., that you don't appreciate when you just listen to tracks randomly.
