Depending on the emancipation laws of Texas, if it goes to court, the court could technically say that she is a dependent child, since she is solely supported by her parents. Therefore, it would be her parents' liability to decide what type of schooling, nurturing, etc is suitable for their daughter. She could be ruled as not emancipated from her parents, which is what may happen since she is still in high school and there is no possible way that she makes enough to support herself. Basically, it would make the parents' signature valid and the school would legally have the right to paddle her.

I know in my school an 18 year old still living with their parents can't even call themselves in sick without the same consequences anyone younger would get, so if Texas laws are similar I don't see why her age is an issue. If she was living on her own, supporting herself, she'd have a case, but if she's dependent on her parents then they'd be responsible for her.

what's wrong with Texas?? Why is it legal to abuse children (for those at the school under 18)? This is fucking ridiculous. Take that charter school for everything it's got, most charter schools are crooked anyway!
For those not from the US, these sorts of laws are made on a state by state basis, unfortunatly it seems some states still allow it.

No, high school is a hell for most mature kids who have become young adults. I know I may be generalizing, but (1) school food is usually terrible and not at all apatizing and (2) in high school I averaged 4 days a week in school. Most people should be allowed and awarded freedoms, if not the right to graduate shcool early.
Fuck Public Schools.
As far as Texas, I'm from Texas. This was not allowed when I was in high school, and that was back in '97. I graduated in '97, and it was not happening in Houston or the surrounding areas past '96. It was plain wrong.
I hope the case is a good one against the school. I don't know if people should loose their jobs over it. That is not my place to say, but the school should not allow such a thing to happen.
Even if the girl was a bitch about it, you're not supposed to have corperal punishment if you don't want it in Texas. That's my understanding. Sometimes children need to be whipped, but not when they're a legal adult.
Is there not a difference between being a dependent and being a minor? I'm 21, but for some intents and purposes I'm classed as a dependent (e.g. since I'm still in fulltime education, my Dad gets tax breaks as I can be classed as a dependent). That doesn't take away from my rights as an adult.

For the people wondering why its not illegal in Texas, we just haven't really gotten around to it. Its rather archaic and, as far as I know, most schools have either banned it or don't practice corperal punishment anymore. Granted, every once in a while, you come up with these crazy ass prinicpals that like to go on power trips, but thats really an exception. Probably after this, the school district will ban beatings after this negative media coverage.
