The whole European angle was very important for us, not only story wise but also the way we were going to produce it. It really had to be a European collaboration, not just cast but also crew. We felt that with the past years of Europe being on the decline, we wanted to give a counterpoint to Brexit, and to nationalism rising in different countries, to go back to that idea of Europe and Europeans working and creating together. Being true to the cultures and the languages was really important, we never wanted to have characters from different countries but everyone speaks English. We wanted to explore this heart of Europe, where everyone comes from somewhere else and speaks a different language, and language defines so much of your culture and your behaviour.
I like it when everyone speaks the appropriate language that they would actually speak in real life. Not this 3 words in a foreign language and then 'let's practice our English' crap. From the Wikipedia page: "1899 is an upcoming German multilingual epic period mystery-horror television series"
Multilingual?

Could be interesting, but it could also turn into an international EU hodgepodge without a clear identity. One of the things I liked about Dark was that it was a terrific German Netflix show. Even when the show makers say they don't want everybody speaking English, when characters from different countries meet they will of course switch to English and not German or French.
That looks so good. Dark is easily one of the best and most overlooked shows ever. I don't know if it's the language barrier or what, but that show is incredible.
Can't wait to see this.
The Dark was soooo good, such an original take and compelling must watch one more episode show, unfortunately we left it ages for watching S2 and fuuuuuck me it was hard getting back into it due its many characters from different times all intersecting each other, but we got there in the end and loved the entire series so this is an automatic watch for me
we had to watch a few youtube catchup shows but even they where hard to follow, you definitely need to watch it in one continuous run whereas we watched S1 when it first aired and then there was the inevitable wait for S2 and we had so much else on it took another year before we got to it and fuuck we give up a few times until it all clicked againYeah it's borderline impossible to start season 2 if you haven't seen season 1 just prior.
You basically have to binge all seasons because there's like 20 characters in four different time zones so effectively you have to keep track of 80 people throughout the show.
