19 people shot in overnight shootings across Chicago

North Chicago is generally fine. It's still "big city" living, so not as safe as a small town, but I never felt like walking around at night there was a problem.

I thought he meant the city of "North Chicago" which is about halfway between Chicago and the Wisconsin border. I hear it's a hole, but I don't know first handother than it looks shabby.

Thanks for the replies, honestly. I probably sounded really silly but as a 20 year old i've never travelled to America before and never travelled alone. Seeing this the day before I fly out was certainly unsettling as I know very little about the place. I will be in downtown Chicago near northwestern uni's buildings.

The problem behind this is rooted much deeper than simply saying its a gun control issue.

And its a bummer to hear people say they're afraid of going to Chicago because of this.

Your loss. Chicago is a great city for the middle-class.

Moving to the suburbs is never a good idea. Most of the suburbs just end up being ghetto's as the cities get more and more expensive. I wish there was more affordable housing for middle class people though. You are either poor and living in a studio or rich as fuck in chicago. If you are poor enough you can get rent controlled section 8 housing. San Francisco I think is worse. My brother is looking and rent in Chicago in decent areas like Lincoln Park are less than half you pay for a tiny one bedroom in S.F. Even Oakland is like $1500/month minimum for a decent one bedroom.

You will be fine trust me, it still is a great city. Yes, you can walk outside at night, just obviously stay safe, don't go walking into some area where it is just you and a few others. And yeah, downtown by Northwestern is a good place.

Safe as houses.

Ah, my mistake if so.

You'll be just fine. Hold on to your stuff, though. Big cities are rife with thievery.

Yep, my tag...such a weak excuse. I get it more then you could ever even comprehend MT. You just think that if you we're born poor you cannot change things, which is sad.
I never even said that. Especially since I know so many success stories and know people who have made it. Not everyone is going to make it. If you believe everyone will then you are lying to yourself. I'll leave it at that. We can agree to disagree.

Your tag is accurate though. I don't really look at tags to determine how a poster is going to act but your is right on. I'll stop feeding you.

Dude that area is so damn nice. You will be around a whole bunch of rich people.

Go North of trendy-crowded-annoying Lincoln Park and it gets cheaper.

You guys are literally using segregation as a racial thing, which is pathetic as hell.

Then why don't we bring in white privilege?

Yeah, you'll get to see older rich guys pick up sugar babies.

Yea, I meant the actual city, not north side Chicago.

I was kinda bad back in the late 80's. I wouldn't walk around at night. Somebody smashed our windows in one time and wrote "chink" on the other one.

But I am white/Filipino, joke was on them! Haha

Was just wondering how it was now.

Isn't that what we should be striving for? Blind to a persons skin color? Again, you cannot call it as segregation. If a family wants out of a shitty situation, they will find a way.

No, because colorblindess looks to ignore a person's ethnic background. We should strive to judge people as individuals, but not to ignore the race-related aspects of their upbringing.

I work in a community center on the west side, and you have no idea what you're talking about. Your solution seems to be to distribute a set of bootstraps to everyone on the south and west sides so they can improve their own condition. Having grown up in a middle-class suburb of Detroit (also a highly segregated area), my privileged upbringing made me blind to the realities of life in poor areas.

The drug war is just a tiny example of it. Even though whites and blacks use drugs at similar rates, you rarely ever see a huge raid on some suburban drug operation, even though the kids in the suburbs are probably doing more drugs than the city kids because, surprise, drugs cost money.

Literally, if you don't take a stroll down into the hood and keep your wits about you, you will be 100% fine.

I feel like that applies to life in general

this is why I sit my ass up on the north side of town and never ever venture to the south side. anyone who lives here knows that

I guess I've never been to Northwestern Proper, just the campus downtown that is like the Law School, Med School...so it's just a whole bunch of super nerdy kids. But right around there you've got lake front drive which is probably a lot of upper middle class and straight wealthy people. The worst area to see old dudes trying to get some is around wacker where 90% of the people drinking and partying are wearing business suits.

Wow.... How about you just leave race out of it all together?

Nope. That's not how it works when evaluating socio-econonmic situations.

Not sure, but the great parts of Baltimore are great. I've driven through the bad parts and it looks scary...apparently that's where all of the great house parties are though...in both Chicago and Baltimore they had these blue lights on streets with high rates of violent crime. It's generally where all of the drug houses and boarded up buildings are.

Yea my sister lives in Baltimore. I visit just about every Christmas. She lives in a pretty peaceful area though. I've never even seen the trouble neighborhoods though.

Baltimore - 138 deaths this year.
Chicago - Averaging 10 deaths a week in 2012.

Completely different games.

In terms of homicide? Chicago is ahead of Baltimore by about 100 murders not even counting the last three weeks.

Holy fucking shit...

Viagra triangle is a funny place. One of my buddies likes to pretend he's an i-banker whenever we venture out there. I usually just buy my 8 dollar gin and tonic and sit there sipping it all night watching 40-50 year old dudes hit on 25 year olds. It's fantastic.

I had a date there last week.

Enjoy your race bating, i won't be a part of you saying there is forced segregation and then talking about white privilege.

Where did I say there was forced segregation?

Okay yea my brother told me that everyone calls it Viagra Triangle. You do see 30 year old alpha male bankers pull up with Ferrari's though. There are some decent restaurants around there so it's hard to avoid it sometimes. I ate at Topolobampo with my brother a few months ago and shit was delicious.

Ugh, that reminds me, I stopped seeing a girl because she refused to beleive a white person could create delicious Mexican food.

We can't be together if you denigrate Rick Bayless.

His brother on the other hand.

I think his Dad is the host (who greeted us that night). I highly suggest eating the wild lamb and beef with mole. There are great Mexican restaurants in Chicago owned and operated by Mexicans but none of them are fucking with the Bayless mole. Also I've discovered that Korean people across the country make the best fried chicken. Go figure.

Haha, as with all Chicago-gaf threads, it always ends in restaurant recommendations.

Well, the other conversation wasn't constructive, so food it is.

Chicago has/had one of the largest police forces around in the US.

Didn't they slash the police budget there pretty harsh over the past few years, not just personnel wise, but also to ops like gang units? Maybe they didn't cut their budgets enough.

But if we eat too much, we'll be bigger targets!

Well dodging bullets slims us down.

And sadly thins us out.

No, what they are doing is they are only replacing officers who retire, they are not hiring more cops in general, which is what we need right now. They also did get rid of special units which was dumb, to save money of course.

The special units are a joke.

I have a friend who couldn't get a job in an entry teams because he didn't have the right connections. He did however spend 5 years in the Rangers.

It's time to bring in the national guard and enact martial law. Goddamn.

This is exactly what they want you to do. Thats why its going to be fine with everyone when this happens and they do a gun-collection.

Makes you think why we've lost so many rights due to TERRRORRRISMMM attacks that haven't happened since 911 on our soil.

has flooding gang ridden communities with cops ever reduced gang related crime?

There is not enough cops in Chicago to do that.

We do have 24 police cameras on every one of these high crime corners though.

Street violence is hard to police. You have to take action against the root cause.

"They"?

the people who are behind the NDAA & Patriot acts, TSA, keeping Guantanamo open, throwing money and weapons at 'rebels', letting bankers retire with our stolen money, that they.

its unfortunate that the only thing that hangs you up about the reality of the situation, is the word they.

But thats what they want you to do. Question me, but let it continue to go on. Domestic terrorism has taken far mar casualties than Al-Qaeda has. Yet we can't protest in front of government buildings anymore, for some strange reason...

Im hiding in Manos's bunker when it goes down.

on topic:

I think all the news about these gun crimes is going to bring the conversation about Gun control to the table as a serious discussion, I think the will of the people is going to out-weigh the NRA on this one. If they keep escalating and have a pattern of being completely random.
