It was pretty good in the early days but it doesn't stand up to what is left on this list.

One of my favorite Saturday morning toons growing up.
 
I actually think some people walked from the thread after a show or two they were rooting for was killed off, plus some hijinks around page 26/27. Here's hoping we have a strong finish, though.

The people that are voting off Spongebob because of the years it aired instead of the quality are crazy. It is one of the greatest and most iconic cartoons at its prime.
 
Yeah, we seem to be down to about ~75 votes per round from a high of ~95.

You guys make it hard to stay around when you keep killing off my favourite shows when there's plenty of others on that list I don't care about!

Yes, and its prime was not the 90s.

influence counts for little at this point, and there are shows that do continuing storylines better. like X-Men, which has been voted off before this.

Spongebob is a classic, and i don't buy the whole "barely 90s" thing when we've got some of the shows on this list that we do
 
.... So then specifically what in those first 14 episodes of Spongebob make it worthy to compete in both a 90's thread and 00's?

What in those first 14 episodes makes it so defensible?

Looks like the vote is getting split between doug, reboot, tiny toons, darkwing, and spongebob.... this may be quite close.

Kill: South Park - Funny show, but I wouldn't put it over Reboot. Plus, it did most of its damage in the 2000s
Kill: Spongebob - Ditto for this show.
Save: Reboot

This has been a fun exercise in figuring out how poor people's tastes in cartoons really are. Watching people at the beginning of this whole thing go for the jugular of good shows that they hated just irks me. Would love to see somebody do a double kill for Archer on a 2000+ version of this game.

It's our second. We have a little girl and now a little boy at 8lbs 4oz. Our children are twice as likely to watch DBZ because we both watched it.

The sad part about any vs. war is that both parties fall hahaha.

A cartoon cold war where the button is pressed every night when the clock strikes twelve.

Duck Tales had 8 episodes of 100 episodes.
Powerpuff Girls aired 20 of its 78 episodes.
Courage the Cowardly Dog aired 5 of its 52 episodes.
South Park would be gone by now if we were judging it on the 90s.

we're kinda past the point where we're just going by what actually aired in the 90s. there's also at least several classic Spongebob episodes among those first 14.

Wow... should have said so sooner. You just sold me on Courage and Duck Tales. It wasn't even the best episodes of Courage that aired in the 90s and it was the least of the Duck Tales episodes. The good memories come from the reruns, but if we were considering reruns a lot of WB and Hanna Barbara stuff would have been added to the list.

2. Just some clarification, are we allowed to vote to kill something twice? I thought that was okay, but there seems to be some confusion.

I was always surprised that he was in it. Usually, he would be in shows that had people like Jim Cummings, Jeff Bennett, Frank Welker, Charlie Adler, Kath Soucie, etc. Those guys were their own community of voice actors. As were the Ocean guys who did most of Reboot. You didn't really see a lot of crossover.
 
I'm not keen on voting for Spongebob yet, because even those episodes that aired in 99 were some of the funniest things I laughed at on tv as a child. I still remember Bubblestand making my face hurt because I laughed so much.

That is a good point. I would have voted most of those off earlier if I knew, well, I was always trying to kill South Park. Though 1/4 of PPG's run being in the 90s is not bad, but definitely not spongebob, ducktales and courage.

The very early episodes of SP are garbage. Very amateurish, and juvenile.

Reboot might not have aged well visually, but it was a really cool concept, and actually tried to not talk down to its audience.

I think the allure of this thread (apart from nostalgia) is now the morbid entertainment of everyone getting burned. Everyone is losing their shows left and right. (myself included)

As far as I know you can vote to kill a show twice, yes. When the votes reach the top ten, however, there's going to be one kill per vote.

And Dexter's Lab is radical.

Doug was the worst show on this list by far. I was discussing this thread with friends a couple of days ago and they all hated Doug growing up too.
 
oh good since we're killing shows that weren't in the 90s enough we can finally rid the list of ducktales and courage next time.

Is it true? Are we finally going after SpongeBob?

It was a good cartoon, but it never felt like a 90s cartoon. It was the dawn of a new era of animation. Its style is and was starkly different from the other 90s cartoons on the list, even the other 1999 cartoons. And as such I never felt it should have made it this far.

ReBoot is a fantastic show... after the first season. It had a very strong serial arc and extremely well written characters. It isn't pretty now, but it was VERY pretty then, especially the later seasons. And the concept was interesting.
 
i'm gunning for dexter's lab next. call me when we get to the 2010s and i'll back the only genndy show worthwhile.

it also warms my heart to see so many people defending reboot. i don't particularly care either way, but considering how long it's been under fire, i think it's great it's still around.

Not even Samurai Jack? Or the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars (not the CGI one)? Both of those are some of the best animated features of the 2000s.

clone wars was nice because it kept the genndyisms to shorts, where they couldn't wear out their welcome.

never could get into jack outside of a few episodes. i can't believe the guy made 60+ episodes and lamented that there was never an ending or a movie.

......... wait.... You said his best was in the 10's but that is Sym-Bionic Titan. Yes it is an amazing show but it is pretty much the only show of his that wasn't a series of shorts....
 
For what it's worth, I think South Park was at its best when it was this little upstart show with paper cutout animation. It caused so many panties to wad and so much congressional fop sweating. It's a lot like The Simpson was at the beginning in that way, because of how it pushed the boundaries of what was "decent" in animation. That's right kids; The Simpsons was controversial.

Samurai Jack is one of the finest American cartoons ever made IMO. Not the finest, but certainly one of them.

I also tend to love pretty much all Genndy's shows. They all tend to be very well rated as well.

yeah, i meant the length of the clone wars were basically very short cartoons where you could get away with some repetition and lack of dialogue. stretched to 10 minutes, it can be annoying, and to 20 minutes, it can be downright boring.

ahhhh now I gotcha. That's understandable. I actually love his episodic nature that he displays so well in episodes of Samurai Jack and even in SBT episodes like Tashy 497.

Samurai Jack was written a lot like (and was basically a love letter) to episodic manga, especially Lone Wolf and Cub (Also known as Shogun Assassin in the American Movies).

As a matter of fact, the characters for Lone Wolf and Cub show up throughout the series, including the main characters themselves (Ogami Ito and Daigoro) in the flashback episode.

He thought the show could go on forever, like some manga do, which it probably could have and that's why he wasn't ready to make the ending yet. He's been wanting to make the movie to finish the series for a while though. Part of the money for Hotel Transylvania was supposed to go towards that.
