UPDATE:

Source is accusing the police of stalling.

CBS 19 Cleveland said:
Just days away from the NFL Draft and a first round hopeful has been accused of a sexual assault.

According to a statement from the player's attorney, Kevin Spellacy, he acknowledges police are investigating the accusation. No charges have been filed against the player.

Cleveland 19 is not naming the player at this time, despite having a statement from his attorney.

Spellacy says his client was in Cleveland with a group of friends and had met a 23-year-old woman in Cleveland's Warehouse District, at the Barley House on April 8. The next morning, April 9, around 3:50 a.m., an off-duty police officer called for police and EMS for an alleged sexual assault victim at the downtown Westin Hotel, according to EMS and police dispatch. Officers and EMS arrived on scene, took statements, and the woman was transported to a local hospital. The player was not there when police arrived.

It's been two weeks since the alleged sex assault took place.

CBS Cleveland 19 has asked for the Cleveland police report multiple times, and has been given no response as to why an initial or completed report isn't available nearly two weeks later.

Uh yeah, something is very amiss here.

Are Cleveland police stalling a sex assault report involving a top NFL Draft prospect? Carl Monday investigates

Cleveland 19 is not naming the player at this time, despite having a statement from his attorney.

Am I missing something here? Why is this outlet admonishing police for not doing their job when the outlet isn't doing their job by reporting the news?

You know it's bad when even the police won't release who it is because it will hurt the Browns drafting plans.

Trubisky's from the area, Garret might be setting up shop there thinking he's the surefire #1...

A rape charge against Garret would send the entire draft into shambles lol

is it possible that charges haven't been filed because the victim doesnt want to press charges? Or is this one of those areas where they can charge someone without the victim?

But yea it seems fishy that they aren't releasing the police report.

It would suck if the draftee from Cleveland was not the guy accused, but his draft stock was hurt because the guy who was accused didn't disclose.

Fair point about the hypocrisy. I'd like to see them keep a lid on it until the police decide if there's enough to charge him with because it's so hard to put that genie back into the bottle if it turns out to be bullshit. But yeah, they seem to want to print their outrage while at the same time repeating the police dept's action.

Some context. 19 is basically the tabloid news station in our area. I'm not saying that they don't have something big............ but I'd be shocked if it were a marquee player. Carl Monday is basically a colloquial joke here in Cleveland. "Be careful, or Carl Monday will investigate you" is a common refrain. Anyways, this doesn't look good for whoever is involved, but wouldn't be surprised if it were literally nothing.

Unless they are going to charge someone they shouldn't be spitting out names to the media regardless of if he's a potential football player or an average guy off the street.

If there is a group of guys potentially involved, don't you need the DNA testing to come back first before you finish the report? what is the turn around time on DNA testing by Cleveland? It is horrific in most places I'm familiar with. a report shouldn't be released if there is a question as to if the act occurred and who committed the act.

Sounds like a tip given to the media by the victims lawyer, which is a bit dubious.

Choice details of the report, if TMZ is to be believed:

TMZ said:
According to the report, the accuser says she met Conley in a hotel elevator around 3AM and brought her back to his hotel room. She claims Conley asked her to have a foursome with another friend of his and a woman. The accuser says she declined and offered to watch the other couple have sex in the hotel room bathroom instead.

A short time later, the woman says Conley unbuttoned her pants and began to have sex with her. She claims she said, "No, stop, it hurts!" but he kept going until he finished. She says Conley then kicked her out of the hotel room.

The woman called 911 and described her assailant as a "black male who wouldn't take his sunglasses off and had an Ohio State tattoo on his left forearm."

TMZ said:
As for Conley, two of his friends who were in the hotel room were interviewed by police and told cops Conley never hooked up with the woman and that she was just mad that she got kicked out of the room.

One of Conley's friends said the two had been lying on the bed together "but nothing happened."
Conley was not in the room when police arrived and his friends said they did not know where he went.

Her story is kind of stupid to be perfectly honest...why aren't the police investigating? Feels like they need to get to the bottom of this ASAP.

Still allegations at this point, i'm not going to rush to judgement and shit on this guy just yet.

This will be a very easy case to figure out though since he's denying that he even had sex with her. So if the kit comes back and his semen/DNA comes up, we know he's lying and a piece of shit.

If him and his friends story is true, there should be nothing to suggest he's even had sex with her let alone raped her.

Well, the two sides are certainly contradictory. Usually it seems its a matter of consensual vs non-consensual. In this case, Conley's friends are saying he didn't have sex with her at all.

She took a rape kit, so now all we can do is wait.

Pretty much this. Seems like a case where the facts should either clear him outright, or show he's guilty, after tests are done.

Also, high profile athletes need to not screw around with random women they barely know and having orgies with their entourage. More trouble than it's worth.

There isn't anything to investigate. How do you propose investigating this? They do a rape kit and ask all the witnesses and if they don't come up with anything they aren't going to just charge the dude anyways.

Police sound like they're doing the right thing keeping his name out of the press until they have the facts in order.

Rape kit will determine who's full of shit.

Interesting developments...

The footage show Conley leaving the Barley House in Cincinnati around 2:20 AM on April 9th ... with the accuser and her female friends following closely behind. At one point the accuser reaches out and touches Gareon's back.

A few minutes later, Conley has his arm around another woman in front of the bar and the accuser catches up from behind and grabs his arm. Gareon looks back and appears to hold her hand.

The video is critical because it appears to contradict what the accuser told police -- that she first met Conley in an elevator at the Westin hotel around 2:45 AM.

Both sides agree they ended up in a hotel room at the Westin together. She claims Conley raped her. Conley adamantly denies the allegation.

Such a fucked-up situation. If she really did get raped, her credibility is shot by lying about the entire night prior to entering his room. That's a huge hill to climb to seek justice.

And if she didn't get raped, she will cost this dude millions of dollars because the chances of him getting drafted tonight in the 1st round is astronomically small as a result. He might not even get drafted period.

You know it's bad when even the police won't release who it is because it will hurt the Browns drafting plans.

Or maybe don't brand someone as a scumbag without an investigation?

Dude will get called a rapist for years now even if he isn't even actually accused ket alone evidence/convicted etc.

Gareon Conley just went 24th overall to the Las Vegas Raiders. Still a first round draft pick. Can't feel bad for him either way

I mean, if he's been falsely accused of rape that will follow him the rest of his life. Look no farther than this thread to see how quickly people just assume the police are covering up for a rapist because he's a star athlete. People are going to assume that about this situation the rest of his life.

I find it highly improbable the Raiders would spend their first round pick on the guy unless they felt overwhelmingly sure he's innocent.
