Going one step beyond X05, Microsoft had a near-complete build of Perfect Dark Zero on the floor with all-new never-before-seen levels. Since we had free reign to pretty much play however we liked, we grabbed the controller and did what comes most natural - start from the beginning of the game. The first level of Perfect Dark Zero is your typical tutorial-style mission, complete with contextual excuses for teaching you how to duck, roll, pop out from behind cover, and hack open doors. What really hits you immediately is how damn gorgeous the game looks. As you walk around the enemy compound, half of which is under water, you notice all sorts of environmental details like the visual warp of looking through liquid, or tracing wires and cables to the machines they're hooked up to.

Although the mission is initially an infiltration sortie, you'll end up going Rambo on a bunch of targets, including hordes of robot spiders and enemy agents. Even more impressive was when we reached top-side of the base and were greeted to an entire platoon of enemy troops, all of whom left exquisite corpses behind after they were shot. The Xbox 360 could clearly push all the polygons and visual effects with muscle to spare. The mission takes you across the surface of the base to a series of platforms. Looking up, you see the epic height of a massive space shuttle getting prepped for takeoff.

well, 1up says pd0 is 'shaping up to be a true killer app', which is great news! :)

Obviously Che is lying. It isn't possible for Xbox 360 to have a good game, much less a killer app!

From IGN's impressions:

Accessing new guns in new missions will allow you to go back to previous levels and try the guns out there. What players won't have access to is the wealth of unlockable content that was available in the original PD or in Goldeneye.

Hmm, that's unfortunate. I always enjoyed racing through the GE and PD levels in order to unlock all those lovely cheats....

Che, were you able to tweak the sensitivity of the controller like you can in Halo? I have my setting at 8 in Halo 2 and prefer a much more sensitive controller. Thanks

Yeah, I'd like to know this as well.

Regardless of what else I hear at this point, I'm pretty much sold on PD0. I'm picking it up with Kameo and Call of Duty 2 at launch.

Was there any doubts that this game would be good? It's been in development forever by some of the best console FPS developers around. I know there was some bitching from the graphics whores, but I never thought that the gameplay was in question.

hope it sucks, then I won't have to get a 360 till halo 3.

It's gonna rule :(

Have you been away from GAF for the last year of so??? Heeeeeelllloooooooo!!!

This game has been the #1 most bashed/doubted/hated game of all time, quite possibly. I said from the beginning (and you did too, I recall) for people to be patient and that Rare is incapable of making an ugly game, gameplay aside. I also said crow would be served, but that's a story for another day... ;)

I don't frequent GAF as much as I used to... I must have missed it all. I do remember all the graphics bashing though. Despite Nintendo's best marketing, gaming is evolutionary, not revolutionary.

the game looks great, controls well, and seems like it will turn out to be an entertaining, worthwhile experience. Now, onto the specifics.

Only seems to be a "worthwhile experience" ?

Dissapointing.

You expect the definitive review? You may want to wait until the final game is released.

I'll ask the question................which Rare game will score higher? Kameo or PD0?

tough call at this point in time

but from what we've seen so far... I'd say Kameo

PDZ. Kameo will get high marks for graphics and mediocre marks for gameplay -- though some will be blind to its gameplay shortcomings (gotta justify $400 somehow!). PDZ will get high marks for graphics and good marks for gameplay.

I get the feeling that I'll bond with PD0 more myself. Kameo looks beautiful, the worlds look cool to explore, but some of those playable characters are just plain weird. Such as the plant creature you use to box enemies with, its just weird. I realize that you probably don't have to it it since there are others to control, its just a nitpick is all.

Btw-in all the videos I've seen the game looks more action based than anything else,I definitely hope we get some great platforming in as well though.

Weird/ Strange/ Different is a very good thing!!!

That is my current problem with Kameo. All the videos look fantastic, without question. But...what do you do in the game? Just fight waves of googlyeyed beasties? I have yet to see a video that shows how you will actually progress through one of the game's areas from beginning (or even middle) to goal. It makes me think that I'm supposed to be so impressed at the various way to attack foes that I won't realize there's really nothing happening in the game.

Yes I know itsalways good to play something unique. I just find it odd to control a plant creature that does-of all things-box your enemies is all.:lol It could be great,I'm willing to try it out,and besides I can always fall back on some of the other creatures if all else fails.

SuperPack, you read my mind. There needs to be a video released showcasing how some of the story plays out. Or how the character approaches the area that he/she needs to go to,and just what you can do in those huge areas once you're there-such as the moutain with all the trolls.

Can you explore it to no end? Is there a good mix of platforming within the area? Or does it play out like a game of Dynasty Warriors where you take out a ton of enemies for long periods of time? There needs to be more clarification about what this game is trying to be.

If it weren't for the gorgous visuals I'd be alot more cautious about the game to be honest. I'm probably picking it up,but I need to see more to cement a day one buy.

Good question, I don't know. But I'll go back and check on that tonight at the 360 party.

In terms of the AI being better in the harder difficulty... Hmm, not really. They aren't total shit, but they tend to err on the side of standing around while you shoot them repeatedly in the face. But it kind of fits the whole Perfect Dark vibe, which has always been more about running and gunning and less about stealthy finesse. So the more bullet fodder the better, I guess.

I think at this point, if the AI isn't done yet, well, they better buckle the fuck down and get productive.

Why wouldn't the gameplay be in question? Rare has been off their game for years. The game has been in production for years across three different systems. The A.I. seems to range from acceptable to downright embarrassing. The multiplayer has been referred to as "overambitious". Etc.

I personally think the game will end up being a solid experience (and Che's impressions lend credence to this), but certainly no stroke of brilliance, and certainly no killer app.
