1up: Nomura Hints at FF VII Remake

I think Scott has hit Square Enix's future approach right on the head. Why else buy Taito, a company with more of an arcade presence than anything else? They know that many of their IPs at least from a character perspective have a strong fanbase that has a fetish level attachment to the IPs (by fetish I mean someone who grossly overvalues something because of emotional attachment, i.e. $350 Cloud Strife Advent Children sculptures).

Full Metal Alchemist was an early approach. FF7 looks to be the first major IP to recieve the treatment, probably because it still has such a strong fanbase. I doubt it'll be too long before we see Dragon Quest get the same treatment.

I really don't have a problem with it myself, as long as Advent Children is a sign of the quality we can look forward to. Thats all that really matters. I love milk, but not when its gone bad. ;P

FFVII AC, BC, and CC

Hey, I never noticed it before but the sub-titles seem to be going in alphabetical order - also, you forgot DC - Dirge of Cerberus. So I wonder what EC will be?

*Note: If anybody is wondering what this "Polymorphic Content approach" is, it's basically the idea of spreading an IP across multiple platforms, and even sometimes various forms of media, in an effort to maximize exposure and, of course, sales.

Sounds like what Bandai did first with project dot hack -.-;

SE thievery +1

And a remake would be stupid. RPGs are the worst kinds of things to remake since we already know what the heck happens barring the tiny insignificant extras that are bound to be added.

Boo hoo, they're remaking FFVII over FFVI.

Popularity people. More people want an FFVII remake. They'll make more money. And quite simply, FFVII is one of the few games that SHOULD be remade. It's fucking BEGGING for one.

But when they remake it, they need to make sure they keep it almost exactly the same but with amazing graphics and sound.

THINGS I WANT THAT NONE OF YOU HAVE TO AGREE WITH, BUT FEEL FREE TO:

- Keep the slapstick humor from the original in it. They need to find a way to translate that from Lego-looking characters to realistic. If Reno and Rude in AC are any indication, they shouldn't have much of a problem doing that.

- KEEP THE FUCKING WORLD MAP. I don't care about the "translation from gameplay to world map" excuse they had with FFX. They can do it. Keep the world map. Just add a few extra new places to go to for the hell of it. Very simple guys.

- Keep the battle system almost exactly the same, except streamline it to match today's standards. Use the same Materia (maybe add a few extras). Maybe speed up the battle a little bit. The biggest change they could make that I wouldn't mind is letting you switch anyone in and out of battle like FFX. I freaking love that. Just keep the battle system pretty much the same.

- Also, don't have the battles take place where you are (although I think that'd be weird to do anyway without changing the layout of the maps a lot), like FF12 does. Have it quickly go to a battle. But it'll take just one second, so no annoying load screens.

- I was just thinking last night about this. I thought it would be cool if after you beat the game, you unlock an extra 4 or 5 hours of gameplay (whether it be right at the end of the game or even a different mode, whatever) where you can play through Advent Children's storyline. A little sidestory. It doesn't have to be deep or long, just let you play through the story. Add in a couple extra scenes from the characters we didn't see much from, until everyone gets together for the big battle.

... Alright, I'm bored. I want this bad. ;_;

I remember a long time ago that an FF VII remake or FF VII-2 was going to be the PSP's killer app. I guess if people want something enough, they'll make up rumours.

I'm replaying FFVII right now and it would be a great game to remake. Even when the game came out the graphics were bad, and now that I'm replaying it, they've aged so that they're even worse. FF VI on the other hand is still a pretty 2d game. If Square updated the graphics and music, and maybe added more cutscene detail I'd be happy. If they added in extra areas or weapons (bosses) I'd be even happier.

The battle system is one of my favourites in the whole series. It seems very classic and retro, and yet it's all futurey with lasers and guns. Also the materia system is really intuitive and the limits are very cool. I don't think they should change the battle system at all. It's perfect.

I'm actually excited about Square's possibilities on PS3. I was more than a bit disappointed at many of their outings on PS2. A game like FFX, although a good looking game, simply lacked the "oomph" that I got when first looking at screens of FF7 and FF8. Although the character models looked quite a bit better, the environments didn't compare to the prerendered backgrounds of the previous titles. The PS3 actually has enough power to recreate something that matches the prerendered backgrounds in FF7 in real-time 3d.

I'm actually glad they didn't make a Chrono Trigger on ps2. Hopefully they'll make one on PS3 instead, where they can realize truly lush environments and characters that come alive. After seeing a game like MGS 4, games just seem a bit different to me. They seem more real. Like you're controlling a living entity instead of a bunch of pixels... You aren't as forced to use your imagination and you become more immersed in the environment. Looking at Kingdom Hearts II on ps2, I can only imagine how Chrono Trigger would look on PS3. Make it happen Square!
