2005 shaping up to be a great year for movies?

Really, there are quite a few movies that immediately stick out in my mind...

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Looks hot)
Batman Begins (Bale IS Bruce Wayne)
The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe (Hoping they get it right...looking forward to more fantasy)
The Weather Man (Hopefully another quality Nick Cage movie to put alongside Adaptation and Matchstick Men)
Melinda and Melinda (Woody Allen movie...looks funny...I think it's called Melinda and Melinda anyways)

Hmm, what else?

Episode 3, George will make it all fit together. In twenty years, peoople will remember fondly of the whole 6-movie series.

This is one of those years that makes me want to actually get up and walk a block to the movie theatre. Just hope that the movies i want to see turn out good.

And this time i'm not waiting in line 18 hours to see Starwars Epi3. I learned my lesson with both previous episodes.

What else is coming out this summer or relatively soon. I've not seen a movie this year just for the simple fact its been pretty dumb so far. Next movie i plan on seeing is HhGtG

2004 largely sucked so I sure hope there's some good stuff to be found this year.

I'm pretty confident that these will be good (2005 US releases):
Oldboy
Revenge of the Sith
Howl's Moving Castle
Batman Begins
The War of the Worlds
The Island
Night Watch
Wallace and Gromit: Tale of the WereRabbit
Jarhead
The New World
Spielberg's Munich project
The Weather Man

Hopefully there are some surprises in there, and I'm sure a few lower profile films and indies that I just don't know much about at this stage that will turn out good. 2004 was just filled with films that disappointed. About all I really liked of 2004 was The Incredibles, Sideways, Collateral, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Bourne Supremacy. The verdict is still out on The Life Aquatic, which I'll check out again when I grab Criterion Collection's two disc set.

Yes, that too. I've already purchased the soundtrack :) I was just scanning Box Office Mojo's release schedule, must have missed it.

I can't see Batman begins being any good. The trailer I saw was stupid as fuck.
I'll add Goblet of Fire to the existing lists.

Serenity is the only movie that matters in 2005! Anyone who passes this movie up should have their balls removed.

On paper, this looks to be my favorite movie year EVER.

Hitchhiker's Guide
Batman Begins
War of the Worlds
King Kong
Sin City
The Brothers Grimm
Tideland
The Constant Gardener
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Wallace and Gromit
The New World
Howl's Moving Castle

And there's always five to ten movies that come out of nowhere and kick ass. Granted, this is all just on paper, but there's still a lot more to be excited about this year than in 2004.

I saw a trailer on IFC for a japanese flick that has sparked my interest. It was called Nobody Knows , and is in limited release across america now. Supposed to be about 4 orphans growing up in Tokyo looked good.

What people?

I have as much confidence as for George Lucas making Star Wars kick ass again, as I do about George Broussard doing so for Duke Nukem Forever. Take that as you will.

Movies I'll see in theaters:

Batman
Star Wars
War of the Worlds

It's just too expensive to see every flick at the movies nowadays:(

If I could, I definitely would, it's the audience participation that I loathe.

Aw, c'mon. Sometimes the audience's reaction makes the movie better! SOMETIMES...

Idono, I thought this was looking to be much worse for movies then the last couple years have been.

That is until I checked out some more movie trailers. Idono... the lack of a new spiderman film still puts it below last year. Sure we have fantastic four to make up for no Xmen 3, and batman to try and make up for no hulk or spiderman movie but it doesn't look that great to me. I just can't shake off the bitter taste of batman forever and the sour moldyness of batman and robin.

Towards the years end though, harry potter 4 and king kong will likely turn out well enough.

I am not going to comment on when I saw the premiere for The Phantom Menace or The Lord of the Rings. On the other hand, I can tell you that the audience reaction after Eyes Wide Shut's premiere was over (filled with young couples), after me asking who Stanley Kubrick was, did NOT make me better.

That, and kids kicking in your seat, throwing popcorn, eating loudly, some guy with a hat in front of you, foreign people translating, kids running in the hall, farts, spoilers, some guy in a suit, etc etc, ad nauseam.

King Kong sucked 70 years ago, it sucked 20 years ago and it will suck this year. I can't see how people are getting sucked into this sham of a movie.

For me, this year, I'm looking forward to Episode 3 (obviously not TOO much though, don't wanna get burned), and the Wedding Crashers. Huh.. that's all I can think of right now.

I agree.

I'm not overly excited about any movie coming out this year. Sure, I'll see the big blockbusters, but I don't think they'll be anything special. Hitchhiker's Guide might be alright. I'm only interested in that one cause it stars the dude from The Office. Batman looks kind of lame. The Batmobile looks like shit. Willy Wonka looks lame. No need to remake. Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe was on tv once. Looked like shit. Didn't watch it. Never read the book. Don't care to see the new one, but I probably will. War of the Worlds I've already seen when it was called Independence Day. Spielberg sucks ass anymore. I love the Star Wars, but most likely the new one will suck. The Brothers Grimm probably won't make it out this year. It's been delayed for over a year already.

That Paul Walker movie does look like good clean fun though. Can't remember the name of it. Something about money found in a sunken boat. That's probably my most anticipated movie of 2005.

:lol I'd assume there would be many cinema stories to tell triggered from Attack of the Clones romance scenes.
However, there is no point to even challenge this, the palpable tension that only a cinema-full audience can transmit when the Star Wars presentation begins in view of the glittering LUCASFILM logo, moving to 'A long time ago..' screen, and finally those seconds in between the fanfare is a crowd blessing. It is absolute 'must' to see a Star Wars film opening week with 'audience participation'. Heck, its the same disappointed audience from the past episodes who are there..

btw does anyone know when the Ep. 3 trailer will show up?

Attack of the Clones was the funniest romantic comedy I've ever seen. I hope Revenge of the Sith follows suit.

Do you even like movies? :D
Check out Kingdom of Heaven is Ridley Scott does the Crusades. Looks great
Also The New World is Terence Malick's new film set at the start of the colonization of America. And Sin City, awesome. Also the Brothers Grimm is finished filming. Hell, Tideland also by Terry Gilliam is finished filming.
And which Paul Walker film, he's got four this year according to imdb.com?

Well Gladiator was awesome, but I saw the trailer for Kingdom of Heaven and it looks pretty average. I don't know if Orlando Bloom can carry a movie. Could be good though. Not something I'm especially looking forward to. The New World looks like shit too. Reminds me of Master and Commander and we know how God awful that was. Sin City might be cool, but the cinematography could ruin it. Looks like Sky Captain and that was awful. I know the Brothers Grimm has finished filming. It finished filming nearly a year ago I believe and was scheduled to release last November. Pushed back an entire year. Lets hope it actually makes it out.

I looked up the Paul Walker film. It's called Into the Blue. It has Jessica Alba in it too. I know lots of you guys like her. I don't really.

Are you sure your name isn't Marvin? ;)

The Brothers Grimm is in post-production. Gilliam is supposed to deliver the movie to Miramax sometime in June. The most amazing thing about the whole Grimm ordeal is, despite the clashes with Harvey Weinstein, Gilliam still got final cut. Tideland is set to premiere at Cannes, and word is it's astonishingly good, so he will hopefully find a distributor for it this year.

The trailer for The New World is nothing special, but I trust Malick.

And Master and Commander was simply awesome.

Don't get too worked up over Celicar. He just said his most anticipated movie of the year is Paul Walker's latest starring role. That alone should indicate his irrelevance to people with even an ounce of taste.

The only audience participation I've ever enjoyed (and thankfully you don't get much in the UK, we frown on "whooping") was at the end of Episode II when everyone started laughing at Yoda bouncing around.

It was pretty funny.

More like the four movie series...most people will say the first two didn't even exist.

All I've ever cared about is Episode III anyway...as long as one is done well, it's all good. Fuck the backstory crap.

I remember when people thought that scene looked bad ass when they first saw it in the trailer :lol...silly fools.

I still need to see Hotel Rwanda...hopefully I get that done this week. After that I'm looking forward to seeing Unleashed, Batman Begins and Legend of Zorro. And I'm hoping Episode III will be decent. I haven't seen much of the first two borefests, but I reckon even Lucas couldn't fuck this one up. Oh yeah, Ong Bak I'll probably just grab on DVD...I've got an aversion to seeing broken bones on a 50 foot screen. :lol

Don't know what it's like for some people, but five to seven good movies a year (good enough to make me want to see it at a theatre) is a roaring success for me. I don't see a year giving me much more then that.

COCKLES

being watched
Only movie I'm depressed about is Chronicles of Narnia. I learned to read with the Narnia books....I even loved the Americanised children's TV Foundation animated version...but good god, from what I've seen of the features - WETA and co and ruined it. LOTR Lite - whole thing looks too dark and grim with all the characters cobbled together from the Peter Jackson backlot and worst of all New Zealand - it's not gods country, it's just flat and uninspired there's one thing I don't want in this movie...for it to look like a Tim Burton flick.

Same reason I hated the last Harry Potter - fuck 'dark'. Give me Colombus's less effective, but more colourful style then more hackyned 'twisted trees...gothic castles and tinted lenses'.

War of the Worlds the orignal was good the remake is going to suck as well. Yet again we will be subjected to Tom Cruise's funny and cocky acting style in an attempt to save the world. How are you all getting suckered into these remake shams. And you all have the nerve to call Hollywood creatively bankrupt. :lol

Ahaha. Tom Cruise won't be cocky or funny. He wasn't in Minority Report, he wasn't in The Last Samurai.
