Same reason I hated the last Harry Potter - fuck 'dark'. Give me Colombus's less effective, but more colourful style then more hackyned 'twisted trees...gothic castles and tinted lenses'.
You know, I have not read the Narnia books, so I can't comment on the choices made there...but there is no question in my mind that the basic art design of Azkaban is leagues ahead of that of that hack Columbus. Cuaron made a film that was more visually interesting and better fit the material he was working with. I'm sure that a werewolf attack and a harrowing trip through a homicidal tree into a haunted house would have fit in perfectly with Columbus' perfect, shiny and dirt-free Hogwarts. *Rolleyes*
It simply didn't work. It was a tonal change that had to be made for the sake of the material, and it also ended up far more visually interesting, far more mature, and made for a far, far better film than the first two. As someone who watched all three only recently, I can honestly say that the first two pale in comparison...especially the craptacular second.

He most assuredly was cocky in both films. I might give you funny but he is SOOOO charming that I think you can't help but to smile when you see him.
Having not seen Last Samurai, can't comment on that, but I did not find him cocky in Minority Report. And, even so, it fit the character well enough. He was the head of this thing, and thus you'd expect him to have some sort of ego. However, I think that it fit in well with the film, was not out of place, and the movie kicked ass.
Looking forward to:
