2009 Honda Civic vs. 2009 Toyota Corolla

Funny you should ask! I've been looking at them this week too. I think I've decided on the Corolla because the dash and e-brake in the Civic are ugly.

Have you gone on test drives?

I have an 06 Corrolla and it's good so far. Have had it over a year and it already need a tranny flush at 30000 miles so I'm not sure if that's a bad sign of things to come.

I always prefer Honda to Toyota. Their cars are usually a little more expensive in my experience but they usually equip the cars better in the basic model. More than anything I just like the looks of their cars more than Toyota.

Are you married to the idea of getting a new car? You could probably get a used Accord for a little more and it would have a lot more space.

I looked at both in '08 and chose the Civic coupe. It has a much better interior, styling and overall quality. The fit and finish just seems more polished.

man speaks the truth.

funny this just came up. I bought a 2008 honda civic si just last week. Its not the 2009 but im sure theres not many big differences. This was my first car purchase. I checked out the toyotas and i did like them, but the si was waaaaaay cooler to me. Plus i found a 4 door version. I guess they are a little bit harder to come by.

I absolutely love the car, thats for sure. I got it for around 16,000 too.

Neither, they are both equally lame. I would've said the Corolla in the past if it had the 1.8L 2ZZ-GE in it, but instead it's the weak 1.8L and lame 2.4L that you can only get in them. But if you had to pick anything, at least get an Si. Build quality, they're the same. Both still look and feel like econoboxes. Both are incredibly reliable though of course since they are a Toyota and Honda.

Hate to say it, but you get a LOT more car for your money with a Mazda 3 and as anyone on gaf can tell you, they drive wonderfully and are amazingly reliable and well equipped.

Mazda 3.

Mazda 3.

My friend got a Mazda 3 recently. It seems smaller compared to a Civic. Haven't been in a Corolla recently..

I dont know, i was indecistion about a mazda 3 or civic si and then i test drove the si. freakin quick, has gps, and tooons of room. I am talking about the 4 door I have now though.

I have a 2009 Corolla S....ask me anything..ANYTHING!

Its a nice little car..my previous two cars have been a worked over 2001 Mustang GT and then a 2006 Dodge Ram Hemi Quad Cab with exhaust work....so to be totally honest, I hate this little fucking car with every fiber of my soul...

But...for a little car that I can avg 37mpg with in mixed driving...its nice. Rides well, goes fast enough, handles fine, looks decent in S trim.

if you are a male with no children: the Civic
if you have children:... the Corolla

Id agree with this..as my demise from cool cars into the corolla was partly due to having a kid...and I tell her 4 week old ears daily, "you're the reason daddy has a lame ass car". :)

Honda!! As reliable, economical, and sensible as Toyota, but has a fun/sporty streak as well. I actually recently purchased a Honda Fit and I love it. I've always like Honda over Toyota, just like I prefer BMW over Mercedes.

I have a black 09 Civic LX 2-door. It's great, can't complain! I think the dials on the dash are pretty ugly and look like the tops of canteen canisters, but it's not a deal breaker. The form factor of the body is really nice. Amazing gas mileage.

I dunno, I'm not super conscious about the the cars I own like some guys are, as long as they aren't completely fugly and unreliable, but I can see myself buying Honda for the rest of my life if this one stays smooth and reliable.

an the magical 10K + dollars fall out of the sky
What? The Honda Insight is less than $20K and the Prius is just little above $20K. Don't tell me the Civic & Corolla are $10K each.

And besides, you will make that money back in gas savings over the next few years as gas prices creep back up. As soon as the economy improves, gas will be heading back to $4+/gallon. It is over $3 for me right now.

Edit: But if a magical $10K does fall from the sky, I'd say get the GM volt, the Tesla Model S, the Fisker Karma, or another real electric car. :D

Don't buy the sedan you wiener. Coupe or bust.

I don't wanna pay higher insurance plus my parents complain that they have to "crawl" into my current car (a coupe) when they come visit :lol

Civic has always been a much better car than Corolla, but this year Toyota really did a good job, 2009 Corolla really looks nice. But I still prefer Civic though.

I would normally say Civic as I own an 01 and its been nothing but amazing for me since I bought it in 2000 ( October of 2000). However the current gen of Civics is not built as well my wife owns an 06 and we've had to take it in for repairs on different things about 5 or 6 times. ( insert woman driver joke)

I asked the service guy what was up since I had never taken mine in for anything besides an oil change and he straight up said that this gen of Civic was built like shit and a lot of people have problems with them. This is anecdotal as hell but I thought id mention it anyway...

What state are you in? In California they are rated the same ( unless you go Si in which case they are still rated the same but higher than the other models)

I looked at a Honda Civic today. They quoted me $18,400 for an LX-S Sedan. Thoughts?

I know it's the lower model, but I got my regular LX for around $16k after all taxes and everything. I have a feeling we could have gone lower too. Talk them down a couple grand.
It's a buyer's market more now than ever.

edit: they quoted you above retail:

they probably put wheel locks on there along with something else you didn't ask for to bump it up $400.

I have a 2008 Accord and I loves it :D My family's always been pretty partial to the Honda family (my mom has a Pilot and my dad has an Acura MDX) due to its reliability.

My quote is after taxes, title and everything. The LX was only $500 cheaper and it had shitty hubcaps >_<

What state are you in? $2400 is a huge difference...

Why not just go up to Acura vs Lexus? ;)

I'm the kind of guy that likes to buy cars for $10,000 or less (used). In fact, this will be my first new car (my 3rd car overall) :o

Illinois.

I had a weird situation where I got a phone quote around $16.9k, went in, was quoted around retail, told him about the $16.9 price, which he decided was before taxes, then I wrenched him down from there. I think the guy was surprised that the guy gave the phone quote for so low.

I'm pro-hybrid, but what the fuck?

In the battle between Pris and Corolla, if gas shot up to even $4.50/gallon, and you drive 20,000 miles per year, you'll only "save" about $800 per year. There is about a $7000 price difference between the two, so it would take about 9 years to pay for itself -- and that's assuming that you drive quite a bit per year, that you don't have any costly repairs on the Prius because it's a relatively complex hybrid, and that gas is a whopping $4.50 per gallon. In nine years, the car will be up for retirement.
