Two yeezus and two Drakes songs in the top 20. cmon now pitchfork.

Nothing wrong with this, they just pretty much chose the wrong song from every band or chose shit songs period.

It's Pitchfork though, they've not had an interesting thing to say for a few years now.

Pitchfork posted their top 100 tracks. They put Drake's "Hold On, We're Going Home" at #1, and let's be honest here, that track is overrated as fuck. It's just not that great. Not only that, Holy Ghost's! cover of it is so much better.

I'd post the whole list, but I can't access the site at work. My favorite track of the year came in at a whopping 93rd. James Murphy's remix of David Bowie's "Love is Lost".

making songs lists is hard but I don't how they pick the worst song for both julia holter and darkside.
and where the fuck is fragment two by these new puritans?

edit: they also chose one of the worst savages songs. I like pitchfork but sometimes I just shake my head and wonder what's going on there.

Reading this thread has put me on to a few good albums that passed me by during the year (really liking CHVRCHES at the moment).

Seen as most people in this thread have reasonable taste in music, I'm wondering what people are using to discover new music. Are there particular music sites/blogs that people recommend?

I haven't put a top 10 together - I've only listened to maybe 15-20 albums this year and am not sure that I have 10 I can enthusiastically get behind.

Mostly for me, unless they're local artists, I generally find new groups through the artist recommendations after I download albums on Bandcamp. Good rabbit hole.

My list of favorite tracks won't include a Darkside track mainly because I think that whole album needs to be listened to at once, and not just one track at a time. I don't even really think any of the tracks stick out that much regardless.

Paper Trails and Golden arrow do?

Paper Trails and Golden arrow do?

I mean I guess they could, but I just consider all of those songs apart of a great whole. It's like Tim Hecker's album is probably going to be in my top 3 as well, but I wouldn't pick any songs off that album as one of my favorites because I consider it as a part of the album itself. Maybe I'm just weird :\

I understand what you mean, but to me golden arrow and heart are the obvious highlights

What makes people like King Krule more than Willis Earl Beal? Krule is clearly has more fans but I think WEB music is more interesting and I like his voice more. I don't have anything against King Krule, just curious.

I don't like Willis Earl Beal's backing music nearly as much and his mood is more inconsistent.

01 | Cloudkicker | Subsume

Man, if you're not listen to Cloudkicker by now, you're seriously doing something wrong. For the sadly uniniated, Cloudkicker is the reclusive one-man project of Columbus, Ohio-based mastermind Ben Sharp. Ben doesn't tour and hell, he puts all his music up for free, building rave reviews and a huge fanbase simply by word of mouth. And my god, what music it is. Merging post-metal and progressive metal in an purely instrumental way, his albums are a treat and Subsume is no exception. He builds layers upon distorted and sundrenched layers is such a manner that its hard to tell if I should go nuts, chill out, or just stand in awe. Either reaction works. Working in bizzare time signatures and with extended range instruments, this album is such a piece of preciscion engineering, like a multi-million dollar warplane, yet in not devoid of that lonely soul. Sun drenched, raindrenched, and agressive. It's like the mind of an engineering trying to cope with his inner struggles, and it all spills out in such a complex atmosphere. This is the album of the year for me. End of story. So good. If you've never heard of Cloudkicker, you've got no reason not go check this album and the rest of Mr. Sharp's catalogue out: It's pay-what-you-want and absolutely facinating.

"You Could Laugh Forever But Never End Up Happy."

This is everything I ever wanted, sonically. Thank you based FelixOrion.

20 | Daft Punk | Random Access Memories

AM just struck a different chord with me than any other album this year mostly because the lyrical content was something I could relate to in my current situation in life.

I could've just as easily put his other release, Outside, but Objects resonates a touch stronger with me. Dude has matured into a truly fantastic artist and producer over the years, and his influences are, like, all of my favorite things.

01 | Vampire Weekend | Modern Vampires of the City
02 | Daft Punk | Random Access Memories
03 | John Mayer | Paradise Valley
04 | Kanye West | Yeezus

07 | Armin Van Buuren | Intense
08 | Danny Brown | Old
09 | Kings Of Leon | Mechanical Bull
10 | Drake | Nothing Was the Same

Pink Rabbits at 87? Fuck that.

Yeah that's my problem with ranking songs themselves. I can tell you what my favorite song of the year is, but after that I'd be hard pressed to rank them. I'd rather just make a mixtape with 10 or 15 tracks I really liked this year. No need to rank them.

1 | Disclosure | Settle
2 | Daft Punk | RAM
3 | Flume | Flume (technically 2012 perhaps, but the deluxe edition was released this year)
4 | Gesaffelstein | Aleph
5 | Kanye West | Yeezus
6 | Daniel Avery | Drone Logic
7 | Jon Hopkins | Immunity
8 | Bonobo | The North Borders
9 | Moderat | II
10 | Kastle | Kastle

I relistened to Churches because of everyone and I also enjoyed Cults album much more comparably. I don't even think Static is all that, but I feel like it takes the few things I liked about the Churches album and amplifies them. It also has a semblance of edge.

I'm honestly still not clear on my list, especially past the top 5 things get muddy. Still, I really need to put a list up so here goes.

1. The National - Trouble Will Find me
2. Darkside - Psychic
3. Arcade Fire - Reflektor
4. Disclosure - Settle
5. Daughter - If You Leave
6. Bonobo - The North Borders
7. Chrvches - The Bones Of What You Believe
8. DJ Koze - Amygdala
9. Burial - Rival Dealer
10. Daft Punk - Random Access Memories

Happy Thoughts Riddim
Beenie Man - Live My Life / Elephant Man - Spread Out
Seriously does everyone just put RAM in as a filler album from 5-10 when they don't know what else to put? *runs*

Given how much enjoyment it gave me this year it was def top 10, but you know, kinda overlistened it and I don't really put it on right now, so if we'd make a retrospective list in a couple of years I don't know if I'd have it there.

Way too lazy to post album covers, links, or the whole list, so just count the top ten.
I know RYM is dumb but that list feature is cool.

1| Vampire Weekend | Modern Vampires of the City
2| M.I.A. | Matangi
3| The Uncluded | Hokey Fright
4| Waxahatchee | Cerulian Salt
5| Oneohtrix Point Never | R Plus Seven
6| The Julie Ruin | Run Fast
7| Danny Brown | Old
8| Tim Hecker | Virgins
9| Arcade Fire | Reflektor
10| Sky Ferreira | Night Time, My Time

The last few people might want to sort out formatting.

Honestly the way they have them formatted is much easier than the way the OP wants them...I'm pretty much just gonna stop following this thread as I pretty much know I'm going to hate 60 percent of the results. Everything I hate is winning, and so I must be a baby about it.
