2015 Hobonichi Techo

There's been a couple times I've wished I've had some memo paper on me just for some random notes, or to write something down for a friend, but all I've had is my Hobonichi, which of course I don't want to tear paper out of. I've been looking for a small memo book that has a grid like the hobonichi, preferably opens like a book-- not a pad, and is thin enough to fit in my Hobonichi case. I looked at two different stores today and didn't see anything good. I checked out the Hobonichi website and BAM, there it is.

http://www.1101.com/store/techo/2015/planner/detail_toolstoys/tt_o_memo.html

The price seems reasonable too. And it'll give me a reason to use that back pocket of the case.

Yeah, I got a set of those with my order for that reason. They're pretty nice to write in.

Weird. I always keep up with Bagel's threads (even though I don't post on them) but for some reason didn't see this one. Found it re-reading the Journal OT thread (link below)

I personally use the Midori Traveler's Notebook but the Hobonichi Techo is pretty cool as well. I've seen it in a few stores here and the quality of the covers is great.

Is it OK to show what I've done with a journal different than this one? I posted it on Journal |OT| Simplify. Organize. Live. (scroll down to the bottom)

I guess for the uses I give to my notebooks the Hobonichi might not be the best thing for me, as I use it mostly for travel journals and sketches, so I'd rather not have any grid on the paper. Still, the stuff posted here looks GREAT!

I loved your post! I'd love to add a Midori Traveler to my collection sometime soon!

Just looking at your pages, it really drove home to me how much keeping a journal can add to a trip. It's nice to sit down at the end of each day and reflect a little on what you did that day. I wish I had done this more in the past. What's funny is, with the travel journals I dd keep, I actually have great memories of writing the entries. So the entries remind me of what I was thinking and feeling and doing, but I also have these great memories of sitting on our balcony in the Dominican Republic, writing. I made 3 or 4 entries when I went to Portugal in college, but I can vividly remember the evenings I sat down to write.

I think the effect is best when you put sketches, tickets, photos (I really want a little photo printer now!), etc in with your entries. The "Hobonichi way" of keeping a journal makes my life more contemplative and the process of recording things becomes part of the fun of doing those things. I feel more mindful and present than if I snap some photos on my phone and tweet them out or whatever. The more I think of my journal as part of my life, and not just a place to record my life, the more I love it.

Thanks so much for sharing!

I'm glad you liked it! Added small sketches really help also make the journal have more variation. My wife also kept one during our trip and because she is not as good sketching, she would just make small sketches of some of the food we had or of random little things like the earpieces she bought or similar stuff.

As for the memories of writing the entries, I absolutely agree. I obviously remember all the stuff I got to see during the trip, but just by looking at the pages without reading or focusing on anything, as you said, I get to remember sitting on the terrace of the hotel during the midday with the sand clouds blurring the background, writing the journal while having some nice lassi, heheh!

I also keep all the photos on my iPhone but I barely get back to them. However I really enjoy going back to my journal and remembering the trip...

I just got mine in the mail today! I got the standard black cover and English planner. I'm really excited to get started. I was surprised with how nice and well made everything is.

So far I plan to fill out my pages with daily:
  • doodles
  • School assignments/study topics
  • Simple to-do lists
  • My current leisure reading book w/ pages read that day
  • T.V. shows/Movies watched
  • Games played
  • Basic diet/exercise tracking

This looks like a lot, but I have small handwriting so it's really not a problem. I wrote a bit today and one or two letters per square is comfortable for me.

Currently I'm using a Sharpie Pen (I love how bold black the ink is) but I may switch over to a Micron at some point.

I'm really happy I decided on the normal Techo instead of the Cousin. It's plenty big enough for me and I can carry it around in my backpack easier.

I've had mine for about a week. It's cool. Still need a decent pen, though. I have no idea what is good. The pages are pretty thin, so I dunno what works best.

Any recommendations?

What are you looking for? Everyone I know likes super duper fine-tipped pens, and there are some good choices there. I really like these:

45989.jpg

Jetpens has a zillion colors. The 0.4mm writes beautifully. I didn't like the 0.3mm nearly as much.

I use Stabilo PointVisco pens to add color. I have sets of PointVisco (which have a more standard-sized tip) and point 88s (which have a much smaller tip) I picked up on amazon. I like the color selection a lot.

Most of my writing is still in fountain pen. I use lots of <m> and italic/stub nibs, which are pretty inky. Aside from the drying time, they work great. The ghosting is so minimal. Tomoe River, man. Tomoe River.

Oh, and I like Kuretake Zig markers for the calligraphic capitals I put on each page. The metallic colors are really cool. Here's a stylized E:

I wish the metallic sheen were easier to capture! (The regular writing is with the PointViscos)

I was given a set of Staedler Fineliners for Christmas, and they are really nice if you want some colors to work with, too!

I am yet to find something that does not work beautifully. I do most of my writing at home, so I can leave the pages open to dry if I used something inky. If you write on the go more, you might even go (gulp) ballpoint.

Awesome, thanks. Those pilot ones look really nice.

got mine the other day. didn't realize how small they were. what are the clear covers for? didn't seem to fit the techo or the other cover.

I'm also using a zebra pen. not sure if I'm doing a disservice to the techo

How dare you.

If you find a pen you like, use that. "Real" fountain pen people would look at my collection and scoff. Who cares? I use stuff I like.

The clear covers ("cover on cover") are, indeed, to place *over* the actual normal, attractive covers. This is a good thing if you like the look of your grandparents' plastic-wrapped furniture.

Seriously, it's to protect the actual cover. I...don't really get it.

I received a Fuji Instax printer for Christmas - it has now become my hobonichi picture machine. It's not the best quality and I'm sure if I did the math it probably doesn't make a whole lot of sense. But I love printing out pictures of my kid and adding them to my hobonichi.

I use mine almost like a journal. Update every day what I did and try to include a picture if it makes sense.

I've been looking at a Instax or a Smartphone printer for my Hobonichi uses. Either way I'll probably only use them for special occasions because the photo sheets are quite expensive.

I bought a 2015 Spring Hobonichi so I used the calendar pages available for Feb, and can finally move onto the half-pages provided for March, which affords me some doodling and actual logging space. I'm using mostly as a planner, to-do list, daily log, and checklist + doodles related to stuff I watched/played/did that day. I'm a bit intimidated at how I'll fill the pages starting in April considering I'll get a full page per day haha.

Exclusively been using the Hobonichi 2015 branded multi-pen that came with the book for writing and drawing, and I like the fine lines I can make with it when needed.

Going down the rabbit hole with Hobonichi led me to Midori Traveler's Notebooks, of which I now have a regular size (for travel and special events journal/sketchbook) and a passport size (wallet, notes + passport if traveling). I really shouldn't spend any money for a while now *_*

Welp, part of the Hobonichi cult now, I guess.

This thread definitely helped in pulling the trigger, so thank you Bagels for the great thread! I actually read every post before finally opening the goodies I bought today.

I actually visited their own (newly opened?) store in Omotesando today, called Tobichi 2. I take classes in Shibuya every Thursday and Omotesando was only 1 minute by metro away so I decided to check it out. Buying it directly from them would save me shipping costs anyway :p.

The store was reaaaallyyyy tiny. So tiny, that I felt kind of uneasy browsing because I continuously felt like the three (!) clerks were all watching my every move :p. It was a nice shop though, with a pretty huge selection of covers. It was nice that the covers weren't sealed in their original plastic packaging, but actually displayed in use with a Techo so you could really pick them up and see how they looked and felt in practice.

Though I still haven't played a Mother/Earthbound game yet, I picked the Onett cover as I like how colorful and quirky it is. They had the English planner for sale as well, but I ended up grabbing the Japanese Spring edition so I could use most of the pages. I'm kinda sad I can't fully understand the quotes and the cool informational pages in the back but it might be good practice for my Japanese :)

Also loved that it came with a free pen! It actually writes pretty decently and I like how it has three colors in one. Will have to pick up some more pens and stationary later -- definitely looking forward to that as Japan has an amazing selection when it comes to cute stationary stuff :D

Speaking of which, what do you all use to stick or tape things in your techo? I have a few movie tickets and I'm thinking about getting an Instax camera but have no idea how I should go about putting them in my techo without having glue residue everywhere.

Sorry for the longwinded post - I'm just so happy to finally have my Hobonichi :D.

Yup, Tobichi 2 opened up somewhat recently and it looks sooooooooo tiny! But a really gorgeous store from the outside. I'd love to give it a visit some day. So jealous~

As for your question, some are fans of using double sided tape. They used to carry some in the Hobonichi online store which came in little stamp-like mechanisms but they seem to be gone. Others love Washi tape to make bold borders around what they're taping in. There's some cool designs in the store, and tons more around online through various retailers, but I've yet to find one that really spoke to me and made me want to use it in my Hobonichi. Some excellent examples of Washi usage can be seen at the Hobonichi Love tumblr!

<awesome stuff>

I'm so jealous! Bury me in the Hobonichi store.

I put aside my Hobonichi Cousin for a bit because I was so busy with other stuff and just generally exhausted by the end of the day. I realized how much I missed it and started writing again every day. It is something I love doing every day. It gives me an excuse to use new pens and inks, anyway!

I use my cousin for work and it's incredibly useful to have boxes to tick off all my tasks and somewhere to write notes every day. It's completely replaced all of my gtd/calendar apps for work.

I also have an a6 and use tape to stick things into it. I'm not sure what kind of tape it is but it's a weird white with a smooth texture tape. If I could get it i'd use washi tape though.

Why the hell are the covers for the English planner 31,000 yen when my leather cover for the larger Cousin was only 10,800 yen?

I want to get the smaller Planner as a more portable companion to my Japanese Cousin and want to get a similar leather cover but that price is killing me.

You don't need to get those ones in particular! Those are designed in part with Sonya Park, the same stylist they hired to create the English planner. Since you're dealing with designer names, you get designer prices.

The smaller planner has a regular leather cover, though this year they only had two options that weren't by a designer. The Black is the only one still in stock, though I think that's what you ended up with for your Cousin planner?

All of the 'Original' size covers will fit the English planner book - they're both the same A6 standardized page size so the covers are universal between the two.

Yeah, I can get the TS Leather for 5,940 yen for the planner but that Wine leather for 31,200 yen is tempting me.

God, I am such a consumer whore.

It is a really nice color. I sometimes stare at all the covers and wish I could get myself to spread for even the nicer non-leather covers. I have grown to have an irrational love for this one.

Hobonichi, thy claws are dug into me!

I really want a cover but the price always deter me from buying one. Is it actually worth it?

I adore the entry level covers! I love how they look and feel, and I keep all of the wonderful pockets stuffed with additional STUFF I want to carry with me. The price really isn't that bad for the nylon covers, and you can reuse them each year, or put any other A5/A6 notebook in there.

Yeah I'm definitely planning to pick up washi tape but I also saw people taping or glueing stuff into their Hobonichi without using tape  One example here. I'm guessing they used glue, probably a glue stick? I guess I'll just buy one and see how it turns out :)

Btw I adore that tumblr! That tumblr and this thread made me buy a Hobonichi :p.

I totally know what you mean -- I love to check the boxes as well and make a to-do list for the day :D. It's completely replaced my phone's productivity apps.

I guess I should stock up on washi tape before I fly back to my country :x.

I regret getting the zippered leather cover.

Too much friction.

I went naked and I'm using it more now.

The Mother 2 cover looks great, though. It's not as obtrusive as the zippered cover.

Zippered covers suck.

I ordered one last week and tracking says it's in NYC in customs. I also got a call from Japan yesterday but I didn't pick up. Hope everything is in order.

Right now a customs official is doodling in your Hobinichi Techo.

This is literally the exact plot of my new romantic comedy. The handsome, pen- and paper-loving customs official is played by me and the beautiful woman whose Hobonichi I write in and who falls madly in love with me, is played by any woman who would find both this idea *and me* attractive.

My own wife called it "more than a little far-fetched." :/
