Just started playing Far Cry 4 yesterday. I'm very pleased with the quality of the vegetation and the colour palette in general - the smooth blending between orange autumn hues, lush greens and stark whites and blues is excellent.

You can just hotsample the game. Run it in windowed mode, set up your shot framing, then resize the window to a massive size and take the screenshot. Then resize back down. Works great for getting downsampled shots. You can go well beyond 4K easily.

Unfortunately that's never worked for me, which is why my shots are always downsampled from 4K. SRWE just resets to a 1920 x 1031 window whenever I click away from a text box to enter my chosen resolution, no matter what I do. :(

How do you do this ?

In Gedo i made a new folder named Mafia 2 and i made a Gedo ini file in there and put the Hash in there but that did not do anything .

You'll also need to add it to your whitelist as well.

Just copy this file and folder directly into you GeDoSaTo\Config folder and see if that then works. You'll also need to comment out the HUD key toggle in keybindings to be able to toggle it off in game.

Let me know if it works for you as well and I'll push it to GitHub.

Those are some fine shots! I remember a couple months back when I was testing SE and it looked fantastic with DSR. Why don't you downsample or do you crop them so much that the aliasing comes out again? Those would be really good without that aliasing. :)

I'll consider running at higher res for future shots. I've done custom res in SE before DSR and it takes a long time to generate the render. Probably best to hotsample when needed.

Hey Jim, I'm just wondering... You've mentioned hotsampling quite a few times before and I'd like to know how you do it. I'm guessing you use SRWE, but how do you change the game's internal resolution if you have to enter a custom one in .ini or .cfg files before you start the game up? Wouldn't that mean you're just changing the size of the window, consequently blurring and stretching the game?

Anyway...

Depends on the game. Ideally, the game will properly re-render to any window size. That means if you change the window from 2560x1440 to 7680x4320, the game will actually be rendering at 7680x4320. The nice thing about this is that you can also change the window to 1080x1440 (3:4 portait), align a shot, then change to something like 4500x6000. Easy downsampled portrait shots.

Most games don't do that though. In the event that it doesn't you can sometimes force a custom windowed resolution in the game's config file. If the game lets the window render beyond the size of your desktop, then you can get (for example) Watch Dogs running in a 6000x3000 sized window. Then you can use SRWE to resize the window to something that will actually fit on your monitor (so you can see what's going on).

The first scenario is so damn perfect for screenshots that we needed to come up with a name for it. Hotsampling! Here's a list of games that we know work with this method. I gotta update it, because Lords of the Fallen isn't on it.

Speaking of Lords, I have a few extra shots lying around from my ReShade SSAO tests.

Cool, thanks for the help - and the super quick reply!

It's a shame to hear that most games don't really support hotsampling though. I enjoy taking 4K screenshots in NFS: Most Wanted but the game is pretty much unplayable on my GTX 670, and when you add in ReShade I'm ending up with 6-7 FPS... I'd love to take 8K screens and things like that, but if I'm going to have to start races at 1 FPS due to being unable to change to another custom resolution in-game, I won't be able to set up a good shot.

Anyway, speaking of Most Wanted...

Quick freecam test. It's a nightmare to use.

I can only imagine the difficulty trying for a free cam. Though after seeing Duncan's walkabout series of this game i'm like "i won't even touch this game" .It's truly amazing work.

Some random old shots

It works with Gedosato .

Sadly , it seems Gedo and Reshade do not play nice together with this game .
Weird stuff happens if you do that .

Another program that makes you feel insignificant is Outerra Anteworld. It renders the entirety of Earth... down to individual rocks. It's obviously not an exact replica, but it's a damn good start.

You need to move the camera around, but also the invisible target the camera is pointing at just to rotate it.... oy

I'm not going to continue with it. What Duncan is doing is fucking fantastic. I've nothing to add.

Aaaaaand some old screens from last year, before I even understood what downsampling actually meant!

Do you get a black screen when ReShade is enabled? I haven't tried this myself but see if using this works; windowed mode + GeDoSaTo (with interceptOnlySystemDlls true) + ReShade + SRWE (if needed to resize).

Damn, this is getting complicated!
