The World Cup Returns to the Centre of the Hockey Universe this September

The 2016 World Cup of Hockey will feature eight teams competing for a best-on-best international hockey championship: The eight teams participating in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey are Team Canada, Team Czech Republic, Team Finland, Team Russia, Team Sweden, Team USA, Team Europe and Team North America. more than 150 of the best players in the NHL will participate in this tournament.​

I think the effort level will be somewhere on par with the world championships... so some players will care more than others. the actual hockey will be better just by virtue of the higher talent level.

I just can't get excited for this. I'll probably tune into the odd game, but it just feels like an exhibition to me.

It's pretty pathetic to only have 6 countries competing.

I always like watching hockey and after the summer have to admit I'm looking forward to this. Going to watch all the North America and Canada games, most likely. Go team North AmeriCanada!

BTW awesome job on the OT, Quick, as always.

Don't know why there's so much pessimism towards this, it won't be the Olympics, but it won't be the World Championship, actually competitive rosters are being iced. The NA team will probably surprise some guys and push other teams too.

TBH it's more of a NHL tournament than a International one. Do you really wanna watch Austria or Lativia get the asses kicked by Canada/USA 12-1?

This Tournament seems more fair than the IIHF one

While there are a ton of countries that have produced NHL talent, there are only a handful that have enough to compete at a high level.

Watching a Latvia vs Canada or Germany vs USA match would by abysmal. Combining many of the smaller Euro countries into one makes the most competitive sense.

Plus, this is basically a cashgrab and an excuse by the NHL owners to say their players get to compete in international hockey where they control everything and get money out of it, without sending them to the Olympics, where they get no revenue and risk their players getting hurt.

I get your point, but seems hockey is not widespread as other sports are , they could use this world cup as an incentive to other countries to invest on the sport i guess

We might see a Asian team down the road I think. The KHL has expanded into China, they won their first two games. So that's very promising

I'm pretty sure this is a one-time thing. In 2020, it's going to be just national teams, with qualifying in 2019.

the thing is there's already world championships every year which every country participates in (if they qualify). the only problem with that tournament is it's held during the NHL playoffs so a lot of the top players in the world don't show up. it's definitely a big deal in Europe though.
