21:9 Gaming Thread | That cinematic feel

So I just noticed the TFTCentral review of the Acer Predator XR341CK is out.
However this is the Freesync Version. NOT the G-Sync Version.
Heres a small section:
We found the XR341CK an interesting and fun screen to test. Clearly it's aimed at gamers and in this 34" ultra-wide space it offered some obvious improvements over what was already in the market. You get the high resolution, large screen size, ultra-wide aspect ratio, curved screen format and all round performance from the IPS panel that people have been attracted to before now. Acer have done a nice job squeezing some additional performance out of the panel as best they can, within the confines of what is currently available from panel manufacturers. The addition of FreeSync is obviously a big bonus, especially considering the demands on your graphics card from a screen of this resolution. Response times have been improved a little compared with the other 34" ultra-wide screens we've tested so far, and no overshoot was present either (assuming you're using a FreeSync system). Lag was also very low, there were some handy gaming extras like the game modes, and even the pretty cool ambient light system. Sure, it can't keep up with some of the new 27" IPS-type panels with their 144Hz refresh rate, blur reduction modes and faster response times. But it's still a nice gaming option in this sector. We noticed an issue with the screen from NVIDIA cards, and so we would recommend the screen mainly for AMD FreeSync users - which is the target audience. There's an NVIDIA G-sync version coming later on which is more suitable for NVIDIA users anyway.

5ms response time apparently, for a 29" screen it's a steal.

Guys I was going to buy the 34UM95 yesterday but I didn't commit during the final step.

I'm afraid of paying that much and getting poor gaming performance...

Can someone come help my mind in this thread ?

It's weird that plenty of people have offered their opinions, yet nobody seems to have asked what GPU you have, or what you intend to have in the near future. Regardless of the answer, in your shoes I'd try to hold out a bit and/or find the additional budget so that you get variable refresh rate to go with your display, if you're looking for this class of display. The high resolution amplifies the importance of VRR.

(If your intended usage involves desktop work and mostly older/lighter games that your GPU easily beats into submission, then the 34UM95 deal sounds reasonable.)

I have an overclocked 280X and I downsample Dota2 from 4K and play with a smooth 60 FPS

This thing has a mega curve, much more than the LG

Black screen, very minimal back light bleeding. Much less than the terrible LG

NVIDIA DSR is pretty much required though, 1080p on this size screen looks like straight ass:(

I just set up my AOC U3477PQU. Need to calibrate it and get used to having a little GAF browser window surrounded by desktop.. now I need to figure out how to get scope movies playing fullscreen in chrome and plex.

I might need to get some right-angled cables as they come out so close to the bottom of the monitor you can't avoid them poking out. Silly design flaw considering how nice the rest of it looks.

edit: woah, it just did a 'pop' and the image on screen wobbled - like an old CRT doing a degauss. Please stay alive brand new lovely thing.

are there any tricks to getting 'fullscreen' videos to work in half a screen? Eg on BBC Iplayer it either shows the video in a tiny window, or fullscreen - there are no 'stretch to browser width' settings like other sites. I used to watch fullscreen on my second monitor, but now I have one 21:9 monitor so I'm stuck with a tiny window in the corner.

I read that LG monitors came with software that lets you split the monitor into sections, and displayfusion also seems to let you do this. But I'm trying the trial version of Displayfusion and full screen video doesn't seem to work - it still fills the entire screen.

-1080p looks like straight ass @35" (so much that if you're not going to use DSR, don't bother with buying this monitor, 1080p looks so rough at that size its painful with out DSR, text can be unreadable and fuzzy)
-Poor to average colors, whites aren't bright and nothing pops
-Matte screen
-Non ajustable stand
-VESA mounting requires separate adapter from BenQ
-Bad button placement and UI
-No Gsync/Freesync

Don't know if I am gonna keep this or return it. On one hand its the only 144hz Ultrawide at the moment, on the other this monitor is really a stop gap(when DP 1.3 comes out next year)
until we get a 1440p Gysnc version.

I would suggest anyone looking to buy this monitor see it in person first, or buy it somewhere with a good return policy. 1080p is a no go at this size if you're used to using a high res monitor. I use a Dell 5k and Macbook retina daily so maybe I am spoiled by high DPI, but I couldn't use this as my only daily monitor, the resolution is just too rough for me. As a 2nd "gaming only monitor" it can be pretty awesome(and really your only option) with Ultrawide+144hz.

In case any new Ultrawide owners are looking for resolutions for GoDoSaTo, here you go.

My AOC is here on Tuesday, what kind of performance at 3440x1440 can I expect with one 970? a lot of talk online is about SLI, but I'd prefer to avoid that since there can be issues. What GPUs are you guys running?

I'm running a 970 (MSI 4G) and the AOC. Haven't gamed on it seriously, but NFS:MW (2012) was very playable at max settings. i figured if more modern games suffer, I could play them at 2560x1080 and they'd still look good (with the benefit of more usable space in Windows apps and for future GPU updates)

Yes, I would avoid SLI. I had 2x980 before and moved to a 980 Ti. Didn't see much of a difference in raw FPS but it feels smoother.

I'd recommend a 980 Ti for this resolution, but a 970 will handle things fine I'm sure if you are OK with lowering settings here and there.

I'm fine with lowering settings, but resolution and framerate are very important for me. wouldn't care if I even have to do medium in demanding games. Most of my FPS time is spent in CS:GO anyway and that will be buttery smooth at 3440x1440.

Don't want to have o take another monitor back but the backlight bleeding on my Dell U3415W is such a freakin shame. I can't not notice it when I'm playing a darker game or even looking at my fucking desktop background. On the bottom left and right corner, I see HUGE splotches of red instead of black. The splot in the bottom left goes over about 1/3 across the screen.

My other 2560x1440 IPS monitor is waaaaaay better.

Sigh :(

That's a shame. I'm still holding out for a 1440p+ 120hz+ G-sync Ultrawide Curved 32 inch+.

I'll gladly sell two of my vg248qe's for it.

I figure when that time rolls around, I'll sell this and upgrade.

For now I'm going to get a replacement. Other than the backlight bleeding, I LOVE the Dell. It's gorgeous.

But this.... oy.

The only downside of 21:9 is that it makes going back to 16:9 a bit shit.

Its like playing all your games in 16:9 and then you go back to 4:3 to play a console or watch TV. Widescreen doesnt look so wide anymore.

I'm currently playing XCom and the view of the battlefield is awesome. Isometric games are just made for this sort of ratio.

Yep... Every time I watch anything on TV or play Wii U.

Replacement Dell U3415W is on the way. I hope i'm not playing monitor tag with amazon for the next week or so. I've heard of people going though 3-4 monitors before finding a good one with no dead pixels and\or backlight bleeding. Especially with that Acer XB270HU.... yikes.

I know backlight bleeding is a common problem but I was hoping it'd be a little less common at a $1000 price point. I guess not.

Yeah, I wouldn't stand for that amount of bleed. Mine's got some, but it's tolerable, I absolutely can't see it on anything that isn't black, and I'm not sure any exist that don't have ANY. Also have one dead pixel, but it's over on the far left side and I rarely remember it's even there. Seen so many worse cases, and I love everything else about the monitor, so I'm just going to keep it.

Unfortunately I notice mine on my desktop background. Which is currently this:

Which is pretty dark but not black. In when playing Metro last Light, the entire bottom left corner of my screen was just covered in this reddish glare.

Luckily Amazon will send you a replacement before you ship your current back. So I can at least keep using this otherwise beautiful monitor while I want for one to arrive with tolerable levels of bleed.

Anyone know of any really good sources of 3440x1440 wallpapers that aren't interfacelift.com?

I wish I knew some places for good reliably quality Wallpapers.

Just as much as I wish all my favorite artists would upload 20MP images of their works.

4Walled

Bing (Search for 3440x1440)

Google Images (Search for Higher than 10 MP)

And god forbid you resort to Deviantart.

Deviantart? That site has absolutely no tools for searching for various resolutions or aspect ratios as far as I know. I'd.... rather not go there for that sort of thing.

I'll check out the others you posted though.

The worst is when you find some really great wallpapers but they're hosted on IMGUR and were not uploaded in high quality, so they get compressed to shit and look awful as a desktop background :(

yeah. I usually look for something like Concept art that I can manipulate to fit my needs.

I took the Original 1080p-ish image and flattened the gradient background to make it look better on a Triple setup.

Can't wait to sell these and get an Ultrawide though.

I'm thinking of getting a monitor for both PC and console gaming. Is it possible to play consoles on a 21:9 display? Or would it look weird?

Finished setting up my AOC a few hours ago, this thing is insane. fits on my desk perfect and it looks like a spaceship control panel. I'll post some pics and impressions later.

Unless the game was designed to be anamporphic 2.35:1 or 21:9, then there will either be bars on the sides or all around the image. You can do it, though. If I were you, I'd stick with a 16:9 monitor for gaming on a Console, as that is the resolution they mostly have in mind. PC, however is generally more open, so that's not a problem.

Interesting. How to search google for 3440x1440 images:

1. Go to google advanced image search
2. Choose any arbitrary image size to search for
3. On the results page, click image size drop down and then click "exactly"

OZWLF8k.png

4. Enter your size (ex: 3440x1440)

Seems like you still have to enter a search term though. I'd rather it just look for the sizes :)

So it looks like Geforce experience just doesn't acknowledge 3440x1440? thats kinda a bummer. Pretty crazy playing FPS games BF4 feels like sensory overload but in a good way. This is going to take some time to get used to.

BF4 has been a blast on this monitor. I've been playing at 4865x2036 (2x DSR) with 2xMSAA and in some maps, that's actually reaching the 6GB VRAM limit already. I have 980TIs in SLI but I'm starting to wish they were TitanXs instead. These cards are just too fast for 6GB....

yes, but "Larger than" Can result in some nice cropable images as well.

Consoles aren't capable of outputting a 21:9 resolution. So you'll end up with bars no matter what game you play, even the Order 1886 and the Evil Within will result in black bars. Unless the monitor has a zoom function but that's not exactly ideal.

For console gaming it's better to stay on a 16:9 display.

Interfacelift has the option to download free wallpapers in 3440x1440.

=P

The nature only theme is why I started looking elsewhere. I'd like some nice variety. At work I'm using this wallpaper stretched across both of my 1920x1080 monitors:

Hard to find stuff like that for 3440x1440 though.
