21:9 Gaming Thread | That cinematic feel

The X34 and Z35 need to release so one of them can be on my desk... I imagine i will lean more towards the VA panel, similar to the Eizo FG2421. Got damn, the upgrade from my current 24->34/35 inches... size does matter lololol

No 120 Hz though...

Probably (Definitely) a laughable question...

Any good Mac games that natively support 21:9? Besides Valve's stuff, of course. Have a 2013 Mac Pro and a 34UM95-P and would like to run something good looking without having to resort to Bootcamp.

The big shiny Acer (or worse, "Predator") logo branding looks crap on the otherwise neat-looking display. Interestingly it looks like Acer's box designer agrees with me and photoshopped it out. Could this mean they are maybe redesigning the logo for the actual display and making it more subdued or something? I'd love them to leave it out entirely, but that's probably way too subtle to hope from a Taiwanese electronics company. Maybe a small lit logo that can be turned off in settings and is practically invisible when disabled?

The discussion about the G-Sync/Freesync real purchase price raised some interesting questions: given the performance of the Fury X at 4K I would assume that it would be a good graphics card for ultrawide 3440x1440.

Thus the question: when do we get an ultrawide Freesync Acer Predator XB270HU ?

Sobi got a new Dell 34" curved with GTX 980 and I am having some weird freezing issues with Fallout New Vegas on area transitions. Has anyone seen that? Its not happening at 1080p.

How hard would it be for Sony to add native 21:9 support?

Hard. It's hard enough getting PC games to support it without the menus or FOV breaking. The FOV might be taxing on system on a console, but I'm not sure about that.

Unless you meant Sony make a TV/Monitor. Not hard, not sure if they make panels in that format.

Does anyone have some good resources for 21:9 benchmarks? I'll be building my new machine in August and hunting for a new monitor in the meantime.

I really want a 21:9 monitor, but it seems like what I want is represented by a fucking hole in the available screens.

Going to 1440p blows the prices out on these things. Looking at models locally and as soon as you go from 1080p to 1440p, its double the damn price for the same features. LG also also does freesync, which locks you into AMD cards from there out.

Now I would possibly consider spending more on a 1440p with gsync, but as I mentioned it doubles the price and to factor into the extra resolution, I would also need a new video card as the 670 wouldn't hope to cut it, so I would have to add another $500-$1k on top of the monitor.

The LG 1080p IPS is actually near perfect, price is on point for me, and leaves me the headroom for a new video card like a 970 or stretch a 980 maybe, but it doesnt do Gsync.

:/

I see you've met the joy of wanting to use tech that isn't well known yet, even here on Gaf.
No its more that what I want could be available right now but it isnt (LG have the screen I want, but they use Freesync but didnt do a Gsync version) and it seems more than anything they are going to jump past the 1080p ultrawide gsync and go straight to 1440p ultrawide gsync which is twice the cost....

Both likely to be only 75hz. Damn, we're so damn close. I mean, a VA panel would be preferable, but I'd settle for near-perfection. Come onnn.

A couple of 21:9 VA panels have been announced.

The Samsung S34E790C (3440x1440 @ 60hz)
and
The Acer Z35

The Acer Z35 is G-Sync and 144hz, however I believe the resolution is 2560x1080.
Both which arent ideal.
GIVE ME A 1440p VA @ 144hz!

I think I would take 29" 1080p with 120-144Hz over 34" 1440p with 60-75Hz.

Is there a reason for lacking high refresh rates in 1440p monitors with Gsync? Not enough bandwidth?

GIVE IT TO ME.

Anyone know if that is that a retail piece or a cherry picked one?
Makes a huge difference with these screens as they seem to vary a bit. I've seen a few and some 34" curved screens have glaring defects (DSE, clouding, BLB).

That's what I think.

I want 34" 1080p 100+Hz with Gsync or Freesync and a VA or IPS panel.

No, Displayport 1.2 is enough for the 2560x1440@144Hz displays that are already available, and the bandwidth is enough for 3440x1440@100Hz.

Does anyone here have a 75 Hz freesync monitor?

I have the 2560X1080 29" LG IPS Freesync. With Freesync disabled, it's a 60Hz monitor, with it on it ranges between 48 and 75. I like it, I can keep everything above 48 on my 290X unless the game is locked or poorly optimized (Borderlands when in DX10 mode is below 48Hz, switched to DX9 and it's consistently above 75Hz). Most games are above 75 and there is screen tearing there, but I only really notice it when I'm looking for it. I don't really see it noticeably like I do at 60Hz. The tears happen so quickly that I generally don't register them. Dropping into the 48 with tearing, though.... That's really noticeable. The colors are amazing, though, being IPS and all.

Yes, however its not released yet.
The Acer X34.

EDIT:
I also forgot about the Asus ROG PG34Q.

has it been confirmed that the Acer X34 has a HDMI in on the g-sync version? Tempted by the LG 34U95 which is quite affordable at the moment (relatively speaking) and I need at least two inputs. I'm not sure I could justify a 50% premium for Gsync but it would be tempting.

It has 1 HDMI port.
But GSync only works through the Display Port I believe.

Well, I've had a 21:9 monitor for about two weeks now, and I'm loving it. I've been surprised at how many games natively support 2560x1080. There are the weird ones where they forget to scale the HUD, or the hilarity of Max Payne 3 cutscenes, but overall I'm well chuffed.

I'm never going back, I know that much. Some of the vistas in Tomb Raider and Shadow of Mordor have dropped my jaw, and racing games are something else. All hail wiiiiiidescreen.

I know what you mean, i only decided to go for it cause a friend that i play FFXIV with told me about it and i decided to check it out and now i never play anything on anything else besides my monitor.

what size did you go for? Although lots of people say 27" 1080p is too low res, I like the size. For a 21:9 keeping the same size would probably be a 34"? Not sure whether to look at 2560x1080 or 3440x1440

I didn't know about this until now. I know my laptop can't run a monitor like this, but... ugh. I want this so bad.

I went with a 29". The resolution and PPI at that size look absolutely fine to me. If money hadn't been an issue, I almost certainly would've gone for a 34" 3440x1440 though.

It was weird going from a 42" 16:9 display to a 29" 21:9. At first it was like I'd lost three quarters of my display. The monitor was about as wide as the TV was tall, and I thought it would be like playing games through a letterbox. Yet since buying the monitor, the TV has been permanently relegated to displaying Youtube vids for my daughter when she's in my office. I just can't get enough of that super wide stuff.

29" 1080p? which one did you go for?

So how many of you ever got to see the Philips 21:9 Cinema tv they stopped making a few years ago?

If you thought 21:9 monitors were amazing. Should habe seen them in full ambilight mode throwing colours on the wall behind them. Avatar was absolutely fucking amazing, all the colours being thrown on the back wall, the blues, greens, purples, oranges as the movie played, its like the image was floating.

I knew when I saw that if I ever had a tv like that it would kill16:9 gaming for me. Now the next best thing you can get is a monitor which ironically enough, I want for gaming.

I see. Well they seem similar enough and you also seem to like yours quite a lot, so for that price I might just go for it! You think 25" for an ultrawide at that resolution is a pretty good choice?

I love it, at 25" is good for me cause i sit semi close to my monitor. Im sure bigger is better but for the price its a good choice. Down the road if i save up and what not i might get a bigger but for now I'm loving playing with this monitor. i stop using my tv to game.

29" 1080p? which one did you go for?

The Asus MX299Q. Not strictly a gaming monitor, but it's doing a fine job for me. I'm running a 970 so 1080p/60 is about all I'll get out of newer games anyway.

So tempted to buy a second one. Can't think of a single legitimate use other than gazing at 42:9 of sexy monitor.
