21:9 Gaming Thread | That cinematic feel

WTF is wrong with these monitors. My new one is pretty much just as bad with the backlight bleeding.... if not worse.

I had my wife look just to see if I'm crazy. On my QNIX which is also IPS, she could barely notice it. Then I switched to the Dell and it was plain as day.

It's problems like those that I couldn't go with a 21:9 monitor right now
The Quality Control is just plain atrocious right now for the price.

Do you have a Best Buy or Microcenter nearby?

Maybe see if they'd let you test some before buying?

That really sucks though.

Best Buy does not carry these monitors and I really don't think Microcenter would allow you to open up the box and test it out before you buy it (as awesome as that would be).

I don't think that's any more typical on these monitors than any other really. Might just be those curved Dells that are having issues.

Just watching the videos first couple of minutes solidifies why I'm 21:9 for life. Unless the standard just disappears I can't see going back to a regular widescreen display.

At what kind of settings are you taking your pics? Mine looks bad as well, but on your screens it looks even worse.
 
Recently bought an LG 29UM55-P, since I wanted a second monitor lately and this one had a pretty good price going for it (around 265 euros). Haven't found anything wrong about it on the internet, so I went for it. And I'm glad that I did (with bonus cat pictures...):

I was always curious about that 21:9 ratio on screens, ever since I saw those first Philips TV's made in that format. After like 2-3 days of using my new monitor, I think I'm convinced to that standard for life. It's almost like using two 4:3 screens in one, except you don't have bezel in the middle. And non 16:9 widescreen movies look much better on it than on my plasma TV. Not to mention my second monitor, which is some 120 hz TN panel, that can't really compare to the IPS one in terms of image quality...

Tried a couple of games and I'm already surprised by the support for that standard, and performance hit is much smaller than I anticipated. I played GTA V at around 60-70 fps, and in 2560x1080 I get like 50-60 fps, which is not that bad, since I can still tweak some of the setting in game. And I've yet to find a game, which is not indie, that doesn't support this resolution at least in some form, not counting some UI glithes like in CSGO. Compared to 120hz gaming, it is like night and day in terms of usability, since I don't hit performance limits of my computer or FPS limiters on game engines...

What monitor do you have?

I'm just capturing those pictures with my phone. Now granted, it doesn't look THAT bad in person. I've lowered the exposure on my phone as much as possible to minimize how exaggerated it is.

Does the LG 34UM95 not really have this problem?
 
These ultra wide curved screens look amazing, but they seem to be somewhat limited still if you want gsync or a higher refresh rate. Even though these shortcomings, I am really thinking about getting Samsung S34E790C. Does anyone have this screen, and if so how are your thoughts? I am also thinking if the smarter choice wouldn't be to get Acer XB270HU even though it does not have the form factor or size I want? It does seem to be the better screen though. What would you all choose between these two? Or is it smarter to hold out?

I had two of those LGs sent out to me and both had a great amount of bleeding. I settled on the Dell too afterwards, and it's pretty much on the same level.
The uniformity made me want to barf at first coming from an Eizo with absolutely no backlight bleeding, but I've learned to live with it.

You can probably try to fight the manufacturer / shop until you get one that satisfies you, but I would recommend not taking ride. Testing those monitors out cost me 120€ or so when one of the stores refused to give out a full refund for plugging it in for 30 minutes. Needless to say I haven't stopped by that place since.

That's why Amazon is amazing. They'll send me a new one before I even ship this one back. I'm just not sure how many times I want to play the swap game. I'll give this one a few more nights to see if I can live with it. 90% of the time it's fine, but when playing dark games or movies it's very distracting.
 
Yeah, I don't have that luxury. There's no gentle giant retailer that you can trust. 100% of the time anyway. The one of the retailers was cool with it though.
If you've got a monitor you can use in the meanwhile and you aren't literally dying to use the new one, you could go through all their stock until you get something that's even slightly better.
 
Man... The ultra wide capability for productivity and gaming experience is just immensely tempting. Like, I feel like I need one now.

I have a ASUS 144HZ monitor, but I'm not sure if I can go back to 60FPS, especially for games like Counter Strike.

I myself have issues deciding between 144hz + Gsync vs one of these ultra wide displays. I have had neither, so it feels like whatever I choose from I cannot live without it afterwards. So what is the better choice to not live without however? :D

If you wait just a little bit and have >$1k budget, you don't have to choose. Acer X34 (3440x1440@100Hz IPS) and Acer Z35 (2560x1080@144Hz VA) will both have Gsync. I don't personally care about the 44Hz top end difference. What counts is the higher res on the X34, the deep VA blacks on the Z35, and likely a significant price advantage for the Z35.
 
Acer X34 (3440x1440@100Hz IPS) sounds great to me. I love the higher refresh rate as 60 FPS feels like a waste of GPU power. I'm just cranking up DSR in every game I play just to get some legs out of my GPUs. That said.... Battlefield 4 at 3xDSR on a 3440x1440 monitor looks SO crisp and clean.

I really hope nvidia gets their shit together and fixes DSR + Gsync + SLI.

2560x1080 seems like too low of a resolution for one of these monitors though. I guess it's a better alternative for weaker GPUs, but after using a 2560x1440 monitor, I couldn't go back to something with only 1080 vertical pixels. The productivity afforded by 3440x1440 is a game-changer as well.

Weaker GPUs? A quick look at benchmarks suggests you should be able to exhaust the performance of a 980 Ti playing new AAA games at highest settings with a fast 2560x1080 display - the GPU can run out of juice well below the 144FPS mark the displays could still handle.

The X34 is sweet, but I prob won't rush to buy one if the reported 1400 euro suggested price is true. At that price I'd like to see VA deep blacks.

Oh, I didn't see that the 2560x1080 was 144hz. That's a horse of a different color :P

The panels for these $1000+ 21:9 monitors sure have been disappointing though. IPS bleed out of every orifice, poopy blacks, and I honestly could do without the matte finish on all of the ones I've tried.

The resolution isn't too low on a 35" if it's only 2560x1080? And 1500 USD (13000 SEK in Sweden) is a bitch too much for me to put on a screen :/ Have anyone heard any release date on the ASUS curved one with Gsync? Those are all the limitations of the same LG IPS panel they're all using. Get a Samsung/BenQ VA which has none of those issues and much higher contrast ratio. There's gamma shift on VA though, but I only notice it when using a fullscreen web browser and that's only when I'm looking for it, not in games.
 
anyone here able to run fallout 3/new vegas flawlessly at 21:9?

no matter what i do i get problems in-game, like choosing skills screen, terminals, etc. tried several different methods of fixing the hud, dunno if i'm just doing something wrong and should keep trying.

i wish there was a site dedicated to 21:9 only, that's really up to date with game compatibility and is constantly updated. wsgf and flawless widescreen are mainly for multimontiors imo and 21:9 just kind of tagged along. wsgf is really ugly, too.

makes me think 21:9 isn't really popular.

i think you made the right choice after thinking about it more. 1440p is kinda maxed out in terms of current technologies while 21:9 is still catching up. it's nice knowing there won't be any significant updates in monitor tech for a while i imagine

i thought the QC for the 1440p/144hz monitors are terrible as hell, too, no?

Does Samsung\BenQ make a 34" 3440x1440 monitor?

I did put in 1 more exchange at Amazon for this Dell monitor. If the next one is worse or the same, I'll just put up with it I guess until something better comes along and I can sell this. I really do love the monitor for everything except the bleeding (I'm noticing it right now in the top corners because my desktop wallpaper is a little darker there).

https://pcmonitors.info/reviews/samsung-s34e790c/ it's the best one out atm IMO, dunno why it isn't in the OP. It would be godlike with a higher refresh rate and/or gsync, but Samsung isn't into that. BenQ only has 1080 vertical ones out now I think.
 
Hey first time poster.

I just ordered the LG 34UM65-P. Looking forward to see how it works out. I have a decent 16:9 1080p setup so my FPS shouldn't dip too much.

I've read several side-by-side comparisons that have said the Samsung is better than the Dell. Especially with regards to the black level. But apparently you need to calibrate the shit out of the Samsung because out of the box, it's apparently a mess. And I don't have any fancy display calibrator. I'd have to make adjustments myself. I guess that's not the end of the world.

So tempted to make the switch to that now. Amazon will surely be sick of me if I send back in another monitor for an exchange... but I'm sure there are people that have gone through more than I have trying to get a good XB270HU :)

I think I made the right choice but I still lust for 21:9 in the future. It just looks so good.
But I think QC is better or at least with an higher chance of higher quality panels with 16:9 1440p panels.

My Predator came pretty much perfect (0 dead pixels, no visible backlight bleeding) and with the ULMB 120hz upgrade.

Also dem 144hz. When 21:9 get higher refresh rates it will be nirvana.

Yeah calibration out of the box isn't as good as the IPS models. I've used similar calibration to what's stated in the review posted above, but with gamma3 instead of gamma2. The reviewer used an expensive calibration tool to get these settings.

While each panel is unique and the same calibration wouldn't work on two panels, it worked out really well for me and it makes the screen look drastically better than default. There's no red, yellow or blue tinge. It's just deep blacks and neutral grays, some of the best colors I've seen on a monitor yet.

Apparently the curve on that Samsung is more pronounced as well. Does that bother you, or do you like it? The curve on the Dell is very subtle.

I've had 3 of these Dells in front of me and each one has had pretty bad backlight bleed. I feel like I could tolerate gamma shift. Seems like you could counter gamma with some calibration, whereas backlight bleed is just.... there.

Sadly the new Aver 21:9 monitors releasing are also going to be IPS and will probably suffer from the same exact problem. But gsync.... mmmmmm.

Are any of the LG monitors overclockable? I have a 75Hz LG and was wondering if it's possible to get 80+ out of it or is the 75Hz a factory overclock and likely the best it can do...
 
Ordered a 25" 1080p LG on the cheap to supplement my work laptop, mostly based on the pictures in this thread, and it arrived today.


Regular monitors are dead to me. I can only guess at how incredible the 34" 1440p models are, but my heart's set on one now for my next gaming rig.
 
After seeing Dark Souls in 21:9 I got the urge to buy one.. Is Dell 29" UltraSharp U2913WM any good, QC issues or anything? All reviews seem really positive.

Also, does 16:9 content look stupid on these screens? The black bars on sides make me wonder, I'll still have my 27" 2560x1440 Samsung PLS as second screen but I kinda want to make the 21:9 my main and middle monitor because of games.

Dell monitors are typically pretty good, I read good thing myself but haven't seen it in action.

Not really, But it can be a bit odd for multi-monitor people.

I'd just recommend using the 21:9 as much as you can, if a movie or game doesn't do 21:9 for what ever reason then you have the 16:9 to fall back on.
 
I was thinking about getting a new monitor and stumbled aupon this thread, then started investigating...

I'm receiving an LG29UM67-P this evening.

Half the price the 34" 1440p model, and still big enough.

I can't wait.

Anyone has this monitor and has anything to say about it? Only read positive things about it.

Unfortunately Dark Souls: Prepare to Die doesn't work as of right now in 21:9... you'll have to wait until it is fixed for the latest Steam update.
 
Oh man, that screenshot is so old. I don't even remember. I just know the game is fantastic in 21:9.

Hopefully Prat can chime in since he's playing the game right now apparently.
 
That definitely looks hot. Man, I'm so conflicted on whether to get one or not.
I really want it for Souls but I don't really play that much on PC maybe Fallout 4 will change that and Battlefront looks nice too, but most of the time I watch 16:9 content so not really getting all out of the screen in that use.
 
I got my monitor yesterday, oh what a treat, I just used it for about an hour, tried Diablo 3, Witcher 3, etc... incredible experience. Tried a movie too. Sadly my LG 29UM67-P came with three dead/stuck pixels, all to the left side, at the same height but at about 10 cm from one another. Like forming a straight line... so I'm returning it.

I feel discouraged when I turn on the computer now because the 21:9 monitor isn't there anymore.
