$30 plastic stands sold separately. $70 and $80 games. Charging for upgrades and cloud saves. Console gaming has become a money sink

Console gaming has become so much nickel and diming.

Look I am excited for the Switch 2, because Donkey Kong and Mario Kart both look great, and the hardware looks extremely capable. I don't even inherently mind the $450 price for the hardware. But I am already paying you $450. You are going to charge me for the fucking tech demo advertisement? You are going to charge $80 for games? After your games already dont go on price drops? And you got rid of your vouchers and coins? The $450 wasnt enough?

I love PlayStation, those have been my console of choice for 30 years. The PS5 Pro... $700. Okay, again, at least the price makes sense for the hardware. But you are charging $700 for a Pro model, not including a disc drive, and charging me $30 for a plastic fucking stand? Really? This is the high end "pro" model, and you are selling it with less functionality than the cheaper model, and not even including a plastic stand? For $700?

It's just... constant. Sony and Nintendo charge for next gen upgrades. They charge for cloud saves. They lock classic games behind subscriptions. Their controllers and accessories cost a lot, like they're way too expensive. Game prices keep going up, and PSN and eShop are nowhere near as good with pricing as PC. Constant anti-consumer decisions and policies from both. And why?

Ultimately, the problem is that both Sony and Nintendo make good games, so I will still get their machines to play those games, but I don't understand why they are constantly nickel and diming the customer more and more. I love PC gaming, because once you are in the ecosystem, you have so many options that you never get locked in to paying for basic QoL or functionality, and prices remain competitive because you always have alternatives. Steam does not charge for online play. Steam does not charge for cloud saves. Steam allows third party sales of games listed on its platform, which allows competitive digital game pricing, even for brand new games. Steam does not charge of better settings or visual upgrades. Honestly, if getting a new GPU was not such a shit show, PC gaming would be the go to recommendation from me for anyone looking to get into the hobby right now. As it stands, the price and stress of getting a new GPU means that I will at least point a complete newcomer to consoles – but those consoles aren't PS5 or Switch 2, they would be a Steam Deck.

I really hope Sony and Nintendo stop this nonsense.

This appears to be a Nintendo Switch 2 thread...

It's expensive but I'm much more willing to pay $700 CAD for Switch 2 since it new system that comes with its own exclusives that I want to play.

With PS5pro I can't justify paying $950 CAD for system that will never have its own exclusives and I can't play my physical copy of games I already own because I have to spend extra $100 for a disc drive.

So I decided to get Switch 2 over PS5pro since I already have PS5 and I won't be missing out any games if I don't buy it.

I'm sure there are people who are much richer than me who can effort both.

Build your social skills if you need to and find friends (online or irl) to play older coop/comp games together with. An old game that you buy for your self and multiple friends in sale is cheaper than buying a brand new one or a night out to eat in many cases. I just finished a co-play together of Batman Arkham Asylum with a friend, and watched a friend stream persona 4 golden playing through the boss fights, cutscenes, and ending. I'm also playing Black Ops 3 Realistic mode with another friend, chipping away at it slowly. There are many ways you can enjoy gaming without being nickeled and dimed by these soulless corporations.

I love my xbox. Playing multiplayer games on it with friends is a blast. Gears of War and Halo are where its at :messenger_sunglasses:

One of the main reasons I've supported Xbox this gen. Gamepass is cheap for the amount you get; almost the best deal I can think of. Free next gen upgrades. Free cloud saves. Backwards compatibility. Now they're going around to all publishers to try and get PC copies and dual entitlement included for nothing. They literally pay me around $15 a month in gift cards just to search on their browser for 5 min a day while I watch TV. Now they're going to include multiple stores.

And the majority of you guys just talk shit and cheer on Nintendo and Sony. No one else is coming to fix this for you.

The Nintendo Direct (to your balls) was a sucker punch to everyone

Nintendo hasn't faced this level of controversy since along ass time. Niutenod shills don't even know how to process this situation.

It's going to be very interesting to see how they react.

Xbox is affordable, but people are maniacally shitting on the console...
Subsidized is not the same as affordable.

Anyway, if you are short on cash you can just keep playing Fortnite on whatever device you already got. I am pretty sure it would still be playable for another 5 years. Gaming is very cheap. Cheaper than it ever had been. But if you want GOOD games from Nintendo, you always had to pay. Never changed. Nintendo gaming is NOT bargain gaming, never was. I have no idea why anyone thinks that.

Sales are frequent on the PS5 and I'm assuming Xbox (I don't check because I only use it for gamepass). Dynasty Warriors Origins came out this year and is already on sale (which kinda annoyed me since I foolishly bought it at full price a month before). Although getting FF7 Rebirth cheap kinda balanced it out. Waiting for sales on my ps5 and gamepass on my series x has saved me tons. I mean I picked up hogwarts legacy for $26 Canadian this past Xmas, if you are patient you can get some great deals. But that's just in regards to game prices. And not really applicable to Switch 1 and most likely 2 where Nintendo made games rarely go on sale.

I know that right now you think you have the high ground, but don't get it twisted, brrrother. Your perception of a benevolent Xbox isn't just far from the truth; all the reasons you gave for supporting them are rooted in delusion. If people talk shit, it's because what Xbox has been doing leads to the detriment of the industry. They literally drove themselves out of business. (Thank God they're not the market leader). The acquisition of ABK gave them some time, but a division like that can't be sustained by money-losing tactics and initiatives designed to gratify consumers at the expense of the "business". Shit already hit the fan once, and MS was there to save the day. Next time:

No one else is coming to fix this for you.

Will that finally be enough to break the spell?

Oh. Can't it stand on its ass without it? I know OG can.

I guess you can make it stand on its frame like so, but might not be the most stable or may have ventilation implications idk.

OG PS5's, before they switched to Slim, came with a sturdy-ass stand in the box which can be used both horizontally or vertically, mine is vertical on it. It just comes off as them nickle and diming costs.

I spent 300+60 on Switch and Splatoon 2, I spent over 3000hrs in it. That means I spent around $0.12 per hour of entertaintment. It's a good deal.

Gaming still gives you the most bang for your buck in entertaintment.

30 bucks for the tiny ass plastic stand is absolutely insane. That thing can't be more than 5 bucks to manufacture. Fuck Sony, even if it's optional, it's clearly just a pathetic attempt at milking their ponys dry :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Ignores all the things you get for free now or for cheap... complains about stuff that costs money...

Want to play 4 players, couch co-op? You're buying a multitap. Comes free now because it's all Bluetooth.

Want to save your game AT ALL? You're buying a memory card and probably multiple. Want to save your game now? The console comes with a hard drive.

Want to play online? Network adapter comes included.

Games used to be 50-60 dollars on SNES in the early 90s, some games were even 70 dollars or 80 dollars... Gaming has always been expensive.

Adjust these game prices for inflation...

It's wild how much gamers complain.

Yep, it's getting harder and harder to stay in gaming for a majority of people in this day and age. So glad I have a huge backlog and don't fall for hype like in the past. I know what I like, and that makes it easier to decide what to enjoy and what to ignore.

lol gaming is cheap. Minimum wage was $3.50/hr in the middle 80s. Games were $60.

Taco Bell here today pays $15/hr. Mario Kart World is $80.

I wonder if there is any subscription service that I can tip money into which ensures that I won't have to listen to people whining about every little fucking thing, all day, every day, for the rest of time.

Plus you often paid the 60 bucks blindly, relying only on pictures on the box or in a game magazine.
