[360] Music player's visualizers done by Jeff minter !

Alright! The only thing I really give a shit about Minter was his VLM shit. Nice. Wonder if Unity (:lol) will make a reappearance on next-gen systems now, like the X360?

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!

At the high school talent show, I hooked up a Jaguar and the Virtual Light Machine to a huge projector to create an awesome as hell trippy light show for our local punk band.

is this the gamecube title ported over to 360 for a quick dollar? He couldn't pull a game off then, so i'd like to see him finish a game this time. Mind you, the jeff minter names means nothing to me - never played anything of his before.

Media player visualizer? You sure are quick with your negative attitude.

:P

Stop being a douche! There's nothing negative about this! >:(

Thanks heavens Gunn was there to help TriXie out! The poor dear seemed so lost.

Have you had a chance to be negative about the dash board yet? Or maybe we can find a shot of the powercord to nitpick? ;) Seriously, are going to be weirdly negative in every Xbox 360 thread?

EDIT: Didn't know my post was going to add to an already growing bash, odnet. :(

Speaking of megatons (or negatons), there is a nice surprise included in the 360 dashboard that will without a doubt piss off a few people here. It's no megaton of course, just something nice.
Gotta love hinting at stuff, bahaha :)
It's true though :D

i just wanted to quote you

Btw this is the thing I was talking about the other day, that I said would annoy some fanboys. There you have it :)

One thing I'm puzzled with:

How are you supposed to listen to music from portable players? We all know that, for instance, the music on the iPod is not stored in a "mass storage" kind of way. You can only access the music from within iTunes (or if you search around some hidden folders). The Creative Zen doesn't even have mass storage capabilities, and its music can only be accessed via proprietary software.

So how is the Xbox360 going to be compatible with all the proprietary methods of storing music on portable devices? Unless it will only be able to play music from Microsoft players, which would suck. Any info on this?

Why couldn't you just get a line-in from the audio of your source?

Seems like you could direct-line link a PC audio-out to the X360 in this manner.

But I can do that now with any system I want. :/ Just plug in my Xbox and Zen at the same time to my surround system. That would be quite underwhelming if it worked that way.

TriXie: So, game publishers don't have to do anything to implement this anymore. But what will I have to do to listen to my music on my Xbox 360? Will I need to rip all my CDs again?

Steinglass: Nope. Xbox 360 gives you flexibility around where you store your music. You can still rip CDs to the console's hard drive. But you can also store music on your PC and stream it to Xbox 360, or you can stream it from any portable media player, a Rio Carbon, or an iPod.

TriXie: No way. I can plug my iPod into my Xbox 360?

Steinglass: Yep. We know that a lot of people have spent a lot of time organizing their music on their PC or portable player. We see the Xbox 360 as replacing your CD player in your entertainment center, but also as the best digital media amplifier available. Your PC is a great place to manage your music, but it's not always the best place to enjoy it. With Xbox 360 you've got one central place to listen to all your music on the best sound system in the house.

You can stream off your PC or portable music device, thats cool.

You know, I thought we were gonna hear about Minter in the next week or so.
This is excellent news. I'll have a reason to put my 360 in the living room now. I'll just have to get the wireless LAN add-on and we'll be all set. Only problem is my son loves pressing buttons at the moment, and the 360 has that big ass power button... what am I gonna do about that? :lol

Man, you really make some of the most pathetic and sad statements on this board...my god, start taking your meds, man.

I love you too....

He was a coder for the sake of coding, now he has a nice "corporate" looking website.

Hey, I love his work, but this just stinks.

No wonder he didnt have time for UNITY.

I bet he lost weight too. F%*k M$. :D

Can I get a little history on why this would piss off fanboys.
Well Minter was working on a GC exclusive game called Unity (that seemed a little Rez-like), but had to cancel it. Now he's doing this.

I just lost all respect for Minter.

I can't think of a more underappreciated, lesser known guy in the industry who deserves this more than Minter. If giving him the ability to realize one of his lifelong dreams, and further letting his work be seen by more people than has ever been possible for him before can somehow be made out to be a bad thing then you are fucking clueless.

Btw, for the rational folks in this thread, check out the pics of it on his site, it looks incredible.

I forgot that selling out is o.k. these days.

My bad.

Go Minter, now you can afford more animals to molest.

do you troll EVERY SINGLE FUCKING THREAD??

anyways, Arsebiscuits!

Remember what I said about Nuon and "computational resolution"? Well, without giving any secrets away and getting myself into trouble with Microsoft, I can tell you that the Xbox360 can bring to bear an absolutely *staggering* amount of computational power on each and every pixel, and never drop below 60 frames a second. The thing's a *monster*.
Finally realising my design of a modular lightsynth on top of that awesome computational power, and inheriting the multi-user controllability from VLM-3, is NEON - and the results are simply amazing. Even I am continually amazed at what it is possible to get out of it, and I designed it }:-D. It is a true light synthesiser, and easily the most beautiful thing I have ever made, by a very long way. We thought VLM-3 was good, but this makes VLM-3 look like Psychedelia. It's truly a generational increment - hence after years of long service I decided it's finally time to lose the VLM name.

WTF! Making a living is selling out now??? Jeez, where do you work that you can feel so goddamned wholier than thou?

Minter is the last of the Mohicans, despiting is weird ways I can only respect him for what he does. Sellout? Please, this is not even a game.

I haven't asked about this on Minter's site, but I wonder with BC in the Revolution and the fact that it has the same API if Unity might be revived. I suspect that this is the remains of it, however.

JM speaks

I know there will also probably be a few who are disappointed or even upset at what they will doubtless see as me climbing into bed with the Evil Empire... well, the simple fact is that it was Microsoft who gave me the shot. Ninty and Sony both know what I do, but nobody was calling me up with any interest in making a next-gen lightsynth. Microsoft were the ones who believed in it enough to give us a shot, and by Goat, given an opportunity like that, I'd have to be stupid not to take it.

Most of all - come on, you know me, it's never been about selling my soul to the highest bidder... this work is a labour of love for me. Nothing has shone as brightly and so close to my soul as this work. It's been my Light, even when at times everything else in my life seemed dark. Ever since I first started working on lightsynths my prime impulse has always been to get something I thought was wonderful more widely known, and with this work, after 20 years trying, we've finally pushed it out there in a *massive* way. *Millions* of people are going to plug in these boxes and discover that they've got something beautiful that they never knew of before. That's *wonderful*. It's a dream of 20 years coming true.

Jeff to Nintendowobbler (whatever)

Jeez, the guy is having a hard time getting work so he's supposed to turn down offers for credibility?

The Jaguar CD's VLM was one of the best music visualizers ever, the best of its time... I used to hook it up at college apartment parties and run a line out of the jag to the stereo. This will be a very cool bonus for 360 owners.

*Fun fact: Prince had VLM graphics projected on a backdrop as part of his shows in the mid '90's.

Xbox 360 Visualization: For the druggie in all of us (tm)

But seriously, good for Jeff Minter. I don't know why anyone would lose respect for him over this, jesus. The guy made a good business decision, and plus it's just cool.
