360 revealed - (no pics yet)

That's pretty cool.

A lot of people were buying skins, getting their Xbox painted, buying new cases, etc. It would be nice to be able to do this stuff by simply popping on new face plates. There could be some cool limited edition designs and stuff too.

Customizeable dashboard is also nice. Some of the hacked dashboards were pretty cool on Xbox. Hopefully you can share your customizations with others too over Xbox Live or something.

The new color scheme sounds a lot better also. I hope this stuff is all true, I can't wait to find out for sure.

Well, if they offer a unit with or without HDD, then that means thats will not utilize the HDD like on Xbox to load parts of the game as a buffer.

Yup. That's so stupid to splinter the market like that. It also means companies will be less inclined to make DLC for their games if only 50% of the market owns the HD and 50% of that are on Xbox Live. :\

If this is true my complaints:
Xbox 360 = shit name
HDD (optional)
unsure of backwards comp

Other than that it sounds great. HDD is gonna sting though. :(

Our inside source says that the console is a sleek silver device worthy of countertop display, and features an inhaled design that turns the harsh angles of the original Xbox into sweeps and curves.

What is an inhaled design? The original Xbox design was sucked in and turned inside out? Designers of 360 were smoking dope when they came up with the design? Or is the author implying the design is inspired (which is pretty odd usage of the word).

The name is horrible, but it will win over massive amounts of casuals thinking the 360 is more powerful than the PS3 even if it isn't.

if this is all true i dont think it'll be xbox 360...just 360.

the microsoft 360.

The point is they don't want to drop the XBox brand, they've worked hard to build up public awareness of it.

Yeah because I see a Volvo S60 I think its more powerful than a MercedesBenz C55 :lol
And I guess my lexus ES330 must tear ass over the CLK320. Man, the logic is just flawless.

By far only the most mentally retarded marketing person would think that matters.

What's Microsofts ad campaign for this going to be? We're going to turn the industry around 360 degrees!!! TEH INNOVATION!

The industry has come full circle.... we started out sucking, we did a 180 and we started doing well, now were back to sucking again.

Just a reminder of what a silver and blue console looks like.

Like Nintendo and Gamecube? Oh, wait...

In all seriousness, I think the name is alright. While I would prefer just "360" over "XBox 360", either is superior to "Playstation."

Uh yeah, you brought the industry right back to where it was before - marketing gold :D

It's all subliminal, man. The casuals eat that shit up!

Anyone who things that the Xbox 360 is 120x more powerful than the PS3 will go into a suicidal depression so I guess its not a big deal.

I doubt that they can/would go with just 360 as you can't legally trademark a number. Something has to come before and/or after it 'officially'.

Just out of curiosity can someone play devils advocate (ie pretend to be MS) and convince me why splintering the Xbox "360" HDD market is a good thing?

:O

I still like:

"Xbox 360, a revolution in gaming"

Though i also am not apposed to:

"Xbox 360, every angle covered"

or

"Xbox 360, 360 > 3."

It's not a good thing, less features is never a good thing,

From MSs point of view its expendable because it isnt needed to play any games, even if it can make them better, you can make it an optional extra and still only sell one version of every game. People with HDDs may be able to use custom soundtracks and maybe even get DL content, but i think MS has been shown this gen that not everyone cares about those things, so MS are left subsidising console costs paying for components users dont even make use of.

Hey I'm actually starting to like the sound of 360. The Xbox 360 sounds kind of weird. But when you say it "The 360" that's kind of cool. It sounds like a skateboard trick.

Well, I would imagine they would trademark it as "Microsoft 360". Then again, I have almost zero knowledge of trademark laws so I could be full of shit.

* Because few developers really used it
* BEcause memory cards are a profit center and can hold enough information
* Because we are pushing a media center PC, and although they really suck - we need to bolster them
* Because hard drives are just damned expensive and allow exploited Xboxen (and we know they'll get hacked) to be used as media centers, PCs, and all those other things that we didn't intend

That enough?

It doesn't matter if you can't trademark the number, Microsoft couldn't trademark 95 either. The main brand is the one that needs to be registrable. And the risk of another direct competitor utilizing the same naming logic to lure consumers and benefiting of Microsoft's 360 marketing is non-existent.

Aren't those good reasons for dropping the hard drive? Not really what he asked for.

The "we should keep the drive side" is:

* Because we'll sell you media center/mc extentender later as we did this generation
* If a game comes along they can make the HD an accessory as FF Online did on the PS2

The keep the drive side is not quite as compelling from Microsoft's perspective IMO when they could realistically get away without it.

No matter how cool/lame it sounds, after a while everyone will get used to it and noone will give a shit if it's called the 360 or the Xbox Zoom!

The product wasn't "95", it was "Windows 95", "Windows 98", "Windows ME", "Windows 2000", "Windows XP", etc . Notice the trend?

*plugs non-hdd xbox 2 into pc and puts dlc on computers hard drive*

wait what?

Yeah, but you're just arguing for keeping the drive, or losing it. What are the arguments for the split?

There exists but one reason for that

money.jpg

Why charge everyone for a device that not everyone will use. The people who will use it will pay for it.

It's true, the harddrive is useless to me. If it means I can save $50 upfront, then cut that shit out...as long as I can add one in the future (if I change my mind), I'll be cool with it.

Well if money's the only thing, it's a pretty weak argument vs. not splitting a userbase. IMO.

But maybe the HDD isn't meant for game developers at all, perhaps it's for other things.

If the market is splintered and game devs will most likely program for the lowest common denominator wont the hard drive be virtually useless / pointless anyway? Why even bother with an HD version?
