3DS Streetpass Experiences

I stopped taking my 3ds out with me for a few weeks but now that I have a new job I've been taking it on my commute and get 1 new streetpass a day. A lot of them seem to be new 3ds owners so I'm glad to that.

So, it turns out the 99 StreetPass limit for StreetPass Mii Plaza is a lie. It must be some weird bug that some people get that changes the number from 10 to 99, but if you reach 10 Miis it changes back to normal. Happened to me today.

It's weird that they would limit that.

From launch until today, I've gotten like 20 or so Streetpasses. Most of them are from the same 4 or 5 people.

Nothing as of late, but I'm taking my 3DS with me to Comerica Park on Wed. for the Rangers/Tigers game. I hope to at least get one tag while I'm there for such an important game

Decent amount of hits around launch when I took it to college, seemingly got less and less as the months passed. Don't even bother carrying it around anymore. I did take it to PAX and I got so many that I just gave up trying to answer them all because it was so overwhelming. There's a limit to how many tags your 3DS can handle at once, it'd literally fill up within 10 minutes.

None.

Not one.

Only owned the 3DS for a little over a week but I've carried it everywhere. I work in the centre of a big city, I live in a busy area and I spend a lot of time at my girlfriends place which is right in the city centre. I'm coming to the conclusion that nobody in my local area carries a 3DS around.

Went to a graduate job expo and didn't get a single one. Talk about a missed marketing opportunity. If they sent out a miii with the greeting "Join us!" I may have been more inclined to.

Oh yeah, completely forgot about getting a tag Friday night during the midnight screening of Human Centipede 2 lol

But still, nothing much as of late

My streetpass has been consistently 1 a day whenever I take my 3ds out with me. Strangely even though my routinely is roughly the same everyday I have not had repeat streetpasses since the summer.

maybe it's the same person fucking with you

I got back to Japan the other day (spend the last 6 weeks in Singapore where nobody seems to have a 3DS..), and on my first day out doing some shoppings, I got 8 streetpasses. My girlfriend went to work today and I told her to bring the 3DS with her, so hopefully she got a bunch today as well :D

Thanks to the 8 streetpasses yesterday, I started a bunch of new puzzles, so hopefully I can complete them soon :) The only one I unlocked was the Pikmin one and it looked really neat! :D I have started working on the Zelda, Kirby, NSMB and a couple more, and I'm almost done with the Metroid one, and half-way with the Galaxy one.

Also, after seeing the Mario/Luigi/Bowser puzzle result.. the next Smash Bros for 3DS better have a nice figure viewer. Just thinking about it makes me feel all fuzzy inside :P

Tips:

- Go into StreetPlaza and every StreetPass game you've got and make sure you've got StreetPass enabled for each game. They do not enable by default, you have to do a first-run and give it permission to share data.

- I've found that if you're at home (or a friends home) and one or both of you have an Internet connection active, they will take longer to Pair-up / StreetPass or not do so at all. This could be your problem at your girlfriends flat if you're using her Wifi.

- I keep the 3DS at the home screen when I close the lid / put it to sleep, I don't know if it helps - but I know some single player games appear to kill the net connection when in use, so its worth trying.

- GAME and GameStation stores are good for hits, as 3DS owners have to go there to buy games, any events / things that attract a geeky crowd are also a good bet. I got 55+ hits a day at Eurogamer.

BTW I know this has been talked about before and I believe it's what some of you were talking about a couple posts above, but I still don't understand..

When I get streetpasses and check the messages, it says XX/10 (01, 02, etc..). Does that mean that as soon as I get 10 streetpasses without checking it, I will stop getting them, or the older messages will get deleted but still get the streetpasses themselves?

Also, one day I got like 6 streetpasses, went to the Mii Plaza, did the puzzles and decided to quit. Then when I came back later to do the adventure stuff, I couldn't use those new Miis anymore. What's the deal? You have to use everything as soon as you get them? :/

- When you hit 10, you stop getting more until you clear them out and play with them. By the time you're doing this, you still can receive more tags, resulting in an arrow appearing in the Mii Plaza interface to check them out without rebooting the app

- Yes, you have to use them as soon as you greet them so rule of thumb is that, unless you're in a crowd where you're supposed to get tons of hits like a nerd convention and you might be missing out tags, you should check the notifications area of the console (without booting the app) from time to time and if you haven't hit the limit, just wait until you arrive home. This way you can also get bigger and better combos in Find Mii.

I believe this may have been changed with the last update... I mean, I don't think you have to view them to recieve more, I think it keeps recieving them all the time but you can only view and play with 10 at a time.

For example, at Eurogamer, I had a notification that I had 10 - I watched them all enter at the gate, and used them for puzzle pieces - and the light was immediately green and the game telling me I had more visitors... I don't think it was because I got 10 hits instantly as I was clearing them, I think they were queued up. Essentially what I'm saying is, I don't think you can miss out on them or anything. Someone would have to confirm whether I'm right or wrong, but thats what I experienced after the last update.

edit: that may have been what you were actually saying yourself. Sorry if so.

Thanks Beje, that's petty much what I expected. Yesterday when I hit the first 7 street passes, I told me girlfriend to go and have some coffee just so I could check the Miis and do all the mini games. Thankfully my girlfriend doesn't complain, plus I invited her to some coffee, hey! :P

Anyway... pretty much as I expected from Nintendo. They surely love their half-assed online elements.

The reason Street Pass plaza is limited to using 10 miis at a time, and the reason you can only get 10 gamecoins a day - is probably to protect / artificially lengthen the puzzle and find Mii games. If you could just go into the Mii quest with 100 Mii warriors, you'd clear the game in no time... hence, the 10 limit. I do kind of agree with their reasoning there... When you've only got 10 men, you cycle through them checking their t-shirt colours, and strategise as to what order you'll use them in because you want to make every hit or magic spell count. If you had tonnes of them, you'd be less tactical if only just to blast through it...

On other games, such as the data exchanged for Street Fighter / DOA figurine battles, or Ridge Racer ghost data -- the limits are probably more related to putting a cap on the storage those games try and use while you're out and about - so you don't fill your system up with stuff you might not want.

Cheers. Everything is enabled at the moment. I'll lurk around a few game stores this weekend and see if I grab anything. I don't like carrying the 3DS around* but I really want to see how this Streetpass thing works. I'm amazed that I haven't had a single hit yet given that I spend so much time surrounded by so many people.

*If the screen-scratching is a myth, I'm a Dutchmans Uncle. Mine is one week and one day old and already I can see lines where my cloth is being pressed between the screens. I really don't feel comfortable pocketing this thing.

Well, for e Find Mii quest thing, they could have it so even if you get 30 street passes, you can only bring 10 at a time, so you need to get through it three times. I sort of understand, but it's still kind of a pain if you ask me...

I completed the entire Streetpass games for about two weeks now. Now I don't know what to do with my play coins :(

Oh, and for those who were wondering, I live in Toronto and average at least 3 Streetpasses everyday.

10 days in Istanbul, 0 hits. I don't think they have any consoles in the City. I saw a cinema with a couple of PS3 units inside. Definitely not a place to live. Hahaha.

Its not a myth, its a reality, but not everyone gets the marks, and few of those that do get marks result in actual lasting damage / scratches from what I can tell. What colour did you get? And whats your friend code?

I get some smudges when I pocket it in tight jeans (that's the only circumstances where I do get them, its fine in other pants, in a coat or in a bag), but I've never had any actual scratches, and I've owned mine and carried it everywhere since March. I don't have any screen protectors or use any cloths and its fine. The only blemish I have got is from where I dropped it getting out of the car :( big white blotch in the black paint

If you look at the way the inner part of the lid is put together, it seems to me that either the rubber stoppers aren't sufficient on some models, or they've manufactured it as such as that inner panel isn't quite as far back into the lid as it should be (there are maybe not even millimetres of difference in it). I've seen it posted time and again (without confirmation) that the stoppers are different on the newer models (black/blue after a certain date, and the red models)... it wouldn't surprise me.

Most people have homeconsoles (Mostly PS2 and PS3). Never really seen that much handheld devices. Tho the smartphones have exploded in populairty in recent years. I don't have 3DS, so can't help you with the hits.

That is incredibly disappointing. That limit is going to be so annoying during NYCC this weekend. :(

Black. I was tempted by the Metallic Red (looks awesome in the flesh) but I stuck with black to match my DS / PSP etc..

Where do I find my friend code? I don't have any friends yet :(

I reckon I'm going to half-inch some bumpers from an Xbox or my laptop if it gets much worse (or if I lose the separater cloth I'm using). It's not the end of the world, it just makes me a bit iffy about pocketing it. Having said that, I don't normally pocket my handhelds anyway, I play 'em on the sofa.

I've been working at kmart since about July. Got my 3DS the day before the price drop. I have seen multiple people with 3DS's and haven't gotten one Mii. The one place I got a Mii from was a shopping center that had a gamestop in it. I was eating dinner there and must've got the 2 that I have then. I have been through a mall. Went to the gamestop walked out. Went outside and got no Miis. The day after I got mine I was on vacation at a hotel and took it everywhere with no Miis. Also, I have the scratches on my top screen. Lucky for me I have a screen protector. Also, most times the slide pad puts a big circle on my top screen.

I'm finding that the 10 coin a day limit is actually preventing me from carrying around my 3DS as much as I could. I almost never get Street Passes where I live, so everything I've unlocked has been from getting coins. Once I reach the 10 coins I can't be bothered with carrying around the 3DS for the rest of the day because historically I haven't gotten any hits. I guess if I worked in NYC or went to college I'd be more apt to carry it, but now its more of something I do for special occasions. I bet if they increased that 10 coin limit it would encourage more people to carry it around which would increase the amount of Street Passes.

You're kidding, right? On what, exactly, would you even use coins? I've had 300 coins since March and carry my 3DS just to pick up hits.

I don't keep 3DS with me every day, so I don't have a whole bunch. I also keep running into a stream of bad luck with my Puzzles and Find Mii characters. I swear I went through almost 70 coins just to get through the room that required the white Mii to light it up. I also tend to get 1 new puzzle piece for every 5+ old ones when using coins. I've had mine since March as well, but I only completed 1 puzzle and got through the Find Mii section once. Out of curiosity, how may Streetpasses do you have? I only have about 30.

You're more likely to get certain puzzle pieces than others. I think waiting and trying again on different days changes the odds, though.

Well there is a Streetpass group here in NY. Check out Streetpass NYC.

To anyone within the northeast area that's interested, and is going to New York Comic Con, we will be there!

That's what the dark room in Find Mii is for. Took me almost two weeks worth of coins to get past it.

I get a tag on average on every trip to the mall, and we have meetings every month or so, so my 3DS is busy most of the time. I think the system is starting to pick up after the price cut, and I expect tags to become more frequent once the Marios are out.

True facts: The most street passes I got in a single day was at a PlayStation Event.
Nice to see that Sony fans are seeing the beauty of the 3DS.
