3DS Streetpass Experiences

I just realized I haven't received a StreetPass in nearly 8 months. I live in a big city and I carry my 3DS with me in my backpack when I'm at university, so you'd imagine I'd get a bunch. I used to get like 3 or 4 a day until last Winter, then it all slowed down until I finally stopped getting them all together. WTF? I'll never even get to Find Me 2 at this rate. :'(

Also, I have a question: Do you receive StreetPasses when you're playing a 3DS game like Zelda: OoT, a game where they cut off wireless connections, and you pop back out into the home menu with the game running in the background? I've been playing Zelda recently and I'm worried I'll miss out on one so I have to save the game and close it completely. Now, anyone who's played Zelda: OoT knows that you end up in Kokiri Forest or at the beginning of the dungeon when you start it up. It's such a bitch to have to get back to where I was constantly. Sorry if what I said doesn't make sense... I just woke up like 10 minutes ago and I'm a bit out of it. :P

I got tons of streetpasses while playing Zelda: OoT on trains. I've never come across any game (other than original DS) that didn't allow street pass and trains are my #1 portable gaming area.

While playing RE Revelaitons I noticed I only got Streetpasses if I had the 3DS in sleep mode. With the game actually active, nothing.

Ahh, I remember someone telling me StreetPass gets turned off with certain games to preserve battery life. I must be mistaken. Thanks. :D

At the Wii U Experience thing in San Diego I got a Street Pass from somebody I've already had a Street Pass from before which I thought was kind of cool.

But even cooler is that this person also passed on their Super Street Fighter IV data for a second time so I could see exactly when the last time I Street Passed them was.

First time 06/28/2012: San Diego County Fair up in Del Mar.
Second time 07/14/2012: Marriott Hotel in Downtown.

I don't know, I just find it super neat that I've passed this same person twice in completely different parts of the county.

Five female Miis in a row? Pfft, piece of cake.

So I walked over 8000 steps today around Central London and zero StreetPasses! :(

I remember encountering a guy a few weeks ago who had over 1500 encounters! I have 32. :(

Got Theatrhythm Final Fantasy...and there goes another StreetPass title that I had to delete. Goodbye Super Mario 3D Land StreetPass. :( I'll reactivate you on my old 3DS once the 3DS XL comes out! :D

I live in London (zone 2) and regularly pick up at least 1 or 2 a day... I've had it since launch and my pass count is now 797. Some places are better than other (game shops, train stations).

Hm? Can you only have a certain number of Street Pass games active at once?

Why is 12 the max? If the activity log can't keep up with 12 of those, SMH. Moments like this bring back my frustrations with Nintendo.

It probably has more to do with the amount of time it takes to transfer data and the estimated time that two 3DS units will remain in StreetPass range on average. If it were attempting to exchange a ton of data for every StreetPass and you got out of range too fast, you might get a higher failure rate on StreetPasses in general.

Just a theory though.

b-b-b-but nintendo's supposed to do everything I fantasize about

Yes, I'd imagine that this is the exact reason. You can't expect the 3DS to be able to transmit a ton of data at once when you pass by someone for a second. They've got to draw the line somewhere.

I thought StreetPass was designed to not even kick in unless people were in the same space for a reasonably prolonged periods at a time? Even then still, I don't think we're not talking about a massive amount of data in size anyways, even if you had 100+ games. Seconds difference at most, being generous of course.

Though if the 3DS-to-3DS download speeds are terrible or something, I can see that being the restraining factor, but I doubt that as well.

Assuming the 3ds never has 65535 games the binary representation of that as a max would be everyone's favourite 2^16. Allowing each game released it's own unique 2 byte number, for every street pass title you would have to send 2bytes of data. And slap on error protection/CRC checks/whatever else nintendo wants to throw on.

I would assume finding and hand shaking another 3DS unit would take wayyyyy longer than it would to transfer 24 bytes of data. Once connected through wifi, even in far proximity with say a bad connection, you would net at least 512 kbit/s. At that speed you could transfer 24 bytes of data in 0.3 thousandth of a second lol.

Scaling that for say 100 games that's 2.5kbytes, double it for the sake of error correction. 5kbytes, you're looking at it still taking 0.07 seconds. Essentially the blink of an eye.

But like others stated, the 3DS has coding to send out a signal every so often (1s, 5s, 20s, 60s, 300s, ...?), try for who knows how long, timeout and wait, then retry. and again who knows how long it takes for two systems to say hello and handshake before sending data.

Note: Also I'm assuming it doesn't have to send Mii data, your system ID, additional game data, etc.

I dunno about that, but I've definitely gotten streetpasses while flying down the highway. The payload has to be really, really efficient for that to even work.

I didn't know there was a limit. This is horrible news!

yeah, news to me too, ugh. i have mario,, mk7, RE, KIU, and now FF, so at least ive got room but that's still shitty.

Zelda concert delivered, i got somewhere north of 150 streetpasses, woo hoo! some great ones too, 6 new states and one from holland, that was cool. kinda sad now that the puzzles are all done...when's the next one? i cant wait to see Fire Emblem, but Luigi's due before then, so..

oh yeah, finally beat Find Mii 1 the 2nd time, so now im using up 100 something coins hiring the one lvl 7 kid that lives near me to help get hats ill never wear, heh.

Hey y'all. I'm guessing it's been discussed, but I've been up for ~21 hours (roadtrip!) and my searching attempts are just pissing me off =)

Anyway: I'm wondering if I'll get any street passes from other cars. Does anyone know the distance needed and time-in-proximity? I'm guessing I won't get any hits from cars going the opposite direction, but what about cars we pass? There's GOT to be people with 3DSs on the road!

I've gotten many StreetPass tags while driving. The range is about 100 feet, and it only takes a second, so it's very possible.

I actually got 2 StreetPass tags the other day while stuck in traffic during a storm. Pretty awesome, lol. Though one guy was playing Theatrhythm and I was literally JUST getting back from buying the game at the store and hadn't had a chance to play it and enable StreetPass yet, so I didn't get his data. Bummer!

Getting 100 StreetPasses in a day is a PITA. I've gotten upwards of 69 in Osaka and 73 in Kyoto during the Gion Festival. This is probably going to have to wait 'til TGS.

Awesome, I figured it should be possible, thanks!

You'll want to make sure that you check your StreetPass Mii Plaza very often! I got 100 tags in one day easily at Phoenix Comicon, but a lot of people I know who went didn't because they weren't checking their 3DS enough. If you let your Plaza max out, you'll be missing out on a lot of StreetPasses.

You probably already know all that, but it's a good warning for anyone. If you're going to a convention and plan on getting a lot of StreetPass, you HAVE to check your Plaza very often!! Otherwise you'll max out and not only will you not be able to get anyone else's StreetPass data, but they won't be able to get yours, either! Try to check your Plaza every 15-30 minutes at least.

When you're doing this, do you have to do your Find Mii runs too?!

You have the option to just not run Find Mii with the current set, but basically once you visit the plaza gate, you're already open to receive new streetpasses. In really crowded cons you really are just on the 3DS at all times if you want to maximize the number of people you meet.

When I was at ALA I was pulling the 10 every 3 minutes or so. Took me about an hour and a half to get to 100 Mario Kart DS users for the golden hanglider.

You don't HAVE to do it, but if you don't, you won't be able to do the runs or collect puzzle pieces with those Miis. Anyway, it's kind of a hassle to do Find Mii runs every 15 mins or so xDD lol

As everyone else has said, yes, you'll want to do that. And get their puzzle pieces in Puzzle Swap.

...Unless you already have all the puzzle pieces and hats, in which case you can just let the Miis in and relax! :D Checking my StreetPasses at conventions is so easy now, lol.

Also, for anyone who finds it very inconvenient to have to pull your 3DS out of your pocket every few minutes at conventions, here's a little thing that I do that has worked very well for me. If you have a Circle Pad Pro wrist strap for your 3DS (or a Wii Remote wrist strap), you can just strap your 3DS to your wrist and hold it or just let it hang their. I know it's probably not something most people would want to do because it probably looks kinda silly, but if you're like me and don't care, it's very convenient. Your 3DS is always out and you can see when you get a StreetPass, and you can easily open it and check your StreetPasses whenever you want. You don't have to worry about it getting lost or anything, either, 'cause it'll always be tethered to you, lol. It's also an easy way to let other 3DS owners know that you have a 3DS.

I believe I was at Disneyland a few months back, and while I didn't get 100 Streetpasses that day, I got well over 40-50. Since I was also holding my sister's unit while I was there, I did a similar system on checking my Streetpasses out of necessity:
1.At around 5-6 new Miss, I checked the plaza, swapped pieces I needed, (and if I had time) played through Mii Quests I had going on.
2. Switched units, while still in the plaza getting hits on my Streetpasses, and brought down the number on that unit.
3.Repeat, and if you get on an isolated line/area, check your other games too! (I prioritized Mario Kart and a couple others.)

I do the same. As I have found with my own (relatively new group) in the area I live in, many of the 3DS owners are in fact, kids, and cannot make it to the events. Despite this, when they see me with my 3DS while I am shopping, they ask if they can Streetpass, and I am happy to let the machines do their thing (and tell them to keep the wireless on, as they, and my 9 year old sister tend to turn it off when they play or whatever).
I am also finding people around the demo kiosks too. They get their tag from the machine, and from mine, if they hang around for a bit too! I figured on how to access the main menu with most of the demo units, EXCEPT the new ones with Mario Tennis (it used to be hold select-start-L-R at Startup with other games that you couldn't just press home button on, but this game...it doesn't work. I'll figure it out =p)

Oh, and to pimp my own group (If allowed), I shall link to one of my series on tips and tricks to the Mii Quest 2 secret path Here. I plan on doing more of these very soon, but suggestions are welcome, if you guys have any too!

Didn't have as much success as I thought I would during TGS last year. Seriously, my best spot is either Yoyogi Park on a weekend or Akihabara standing between the station and Yodobashi Camera (probably on the station side of the street is best, but probably is fine either way).

I cleared the first set of tile puzzles in front of Yodobashi Akiba. Now I live in Kyoto, but hope to make it back for TGS.

Perhaps. She has 300 coins (max) so I guess it won't hurt to try. Thanks for the info.

In case you are still wondering about this, I just beat the Dark Emperor and got the golden key on my first attempt. All I did rehire level 7 Miis over and over and occasionally hired two at once and teamed them up when I forgot about it one day, so unless you kept missing your attacks, it is completely possible to get the golden key by just using the same level 7 Mii over and over again.

Finally found someone with the one piece I was missing in the DK puzzle. That marks the first puzzle from the new set that I have completed. Also the removal of a coin sink.

Next puzzle to be completed will be the Pilotwings one since that too has one piece left. Had an amazing bit of luck getting two new pieces in a row for it yesterday.

Currently sporting the beehive wig. It is absolutely fabulous.

What golden key?!
When you beat the final boss of Streetpass Quest 2's secret quest under certain conditions (apparently defeating it using no more than 20 Miis) you get a golden key which unlocks the locked route at the bottom right of the map that gives you the
3DS and NES
hats.

Considering I exclusively use coins to power my way through Find Mii, due to a stellar lack of local Streetpass opportunities, I am sad that I will likely never, ever get those hats. :(

Made a terrible mistake and soft reset in Mario 3D Land which wiped my most recent streetpass times. And I had finally found someone with a better time on a level. :(

Oh well. At least I remembered the time.
