3DS Streetpass Experiences

One word of warning for the relays. You may have to get past their internet pass page to connect to the relay zone.

Was enjoying my pumpkin spice latte in starbucks with my laptop and 3DS like a normal liberal boston armchair war tactician and noticed I wasn't picking up any passes. I went to internet browser and brought up google and starbucks asked me to accept their terms to connect to the internet.

It was only after I accepted that I connected and got 5 passes.

I still haven't gotten any Pokémon StreetPasses, even though I've seen a bunch of people with it as their recently played game. Sad. :(

Always impresses me how a game with such a HUGE amount of online features has the streetpass so under used and HIDDEN

Wonder trade would be PERFECT for streetpass

The fact that they bury the Streetpass settings in the Holo Caster is stupid. Why don't games ask you to activate Streetpass functionality when you first boot them up?

The Streetpass functionality in Pokemon sucks anyway so it's no big loss.

What exactly does it do?

You can get PP Ups and Heart Scales too :p

I'm gonna guess they will add more items to the PGL PokéMiles shop as time passes.

Maybe rare berries?

Apparently my local Home Depot store is now a relay point. I went there yesterday and ended up with 10 tags on one 3DS and 9 on the other, plus four Animal Crossing and a Pokemon tag. I spent about 20 minutes there (since it takes so long to figure out where something is located in a place like that).

My consoles were at the Home menu and not in game-suspend mode.

Yeah just looked it up on Nintendo's page and yeah, looks like my local Home Depot is now a bona fide Zone.

Weird, will have to try this next time. I connected to the Nintendo Zone just fine, but I don't think I actually picked up any tags. Sucks it isn't as convenient a it should be.

Actually the banner pretty much confirms that berries will be added to the catalogue eventually. Take a look:

Those are the Occa and Yache berries, btw.

I pass people all the time but problem with streetpass is I cant add them as a friend so how can you even connect with a random mii character?

They could have done so much more with Pokemon though. Like Wonder Trades, or letting you battle against their team, or at least adding them to your Acquaintances list. You can earn Poke Miles without Streetpassing anyway.

That's why I was thinking it was a bug in the holo-caster or something.

I was refusing to believe that Nintendo did this little regarding streetpass in their flagship handheld release.

So is giving you Pokemiles literally all that X and Y do with Streetpasses?
White and Black 2 had better Streetpass functionality and that was on a system that didn't have Streetpass.

Yeah I agree, I had high expectations for Pokémon StreetPass. But at least the online functionality is robust enough that it doesn't matter a whole lot. Wonder Trading is something I had actually envisioned for StreetPass even before it was announced forreal, but I can't really think of a good reason for it to be gated behind StreetPass instead of the way it works now anyway.

One thing that would've been nice is swapping your current party with people you SP and then allowing you to battle an AI-controlled version of them. Something like this existed in a previous game, no? Was it HGSS? Don't recall.

It was definitely in HGSS and I'm pretty sure it was in the original Gold and Silver too.
Ruby and Sapphire had the best version of this functionality where you could make a secret base somewhere in the world and decorate it how you want, then when you connect with someone your base and an AI trainer with your party is sent to their world. But Game Freak loves adding great features then taking them away for no reason so that has never come back.

They're also going to add "Attractions" that cost PokeMiles to play and award items or berries (probably flash games like what was in the dream world.)
Play attractions

On the PokéMileage Club page, you’ll find various attractions to play. The attractions have multiple levels, which can be unlocked by obtaining Medals at the Pokémon Global Link.

Each attraction requires a certain number of Poké Miles to play. Based on the results of your play session, you may receive various items or Berries.

Spend them at the shop

At the PokéMileage Shop, you can spend Poké Miles in exchange for items and Berries.

Those things would have been so much better... Exchanging items, trading/getting a random Pokémon from players, battling other people's team.
Dammit! Wasted streetpass functionality :\

Don't worry guys, they're gonna patch the real streetpass stuff back in when they fix the save bug.

And make the overworld 3D tooooo.

These suggestions as well as most I see sound either game breaking or something people actually wouldn't use or are already better served by something like the GTS.

Battling teams for rewards at Level 50 might be cool. I think Pokemon Amie rewards would've been the way to go.

Yup, but it'll be a separate app that will also get a retail release and they'll call it 'Pokemon Z'.

So, I tried "brute forcing" Streetpass out yesterday -- I took the MACs of about 10 local Nintendo Zones (ones I've actually passed in real life), and tested transmission times... it looks as though it takes at least 2 minutes to successfully complete SP exchange now, whereas it was shorter in the past.

Also, I ended up with a SP hit from a WayForward programmer... either he's visiting relatives in my city, or fooling around with out-of-the-area streetpasses.
There is a Starbucks right next to a McDonald's about a mile away from where I live so I decided to do a bit of experimenting yesterday. Normally I just keep my 3DS in a bag or in my pocket but this time I decided to keep an eye on it while street relay did it's work.

It took ~5 minutes for the light to come on at the Starbucks but it only took 30 seconds to 1 minute for it to kick on at the McDonalds.

I can verify that this was not the problem at the Starbucks I went to, it just took a really long time for it to interface with the server and perform the pass.

Streetpass has been on fire for me these last few days. Queue gets a to about 7 on Thursday, it on 9 Friday I clear it out, on Saturday it is back up to 8, clear it out. Monday is up to 10...

I'm at 17/40 on the Pokemon XY puzzle and I think I've nearly done my local area in terms of availability. No purples yet...

I got around 400 pokémiles with 9 streetpass tags.
Are you sure that was not just the total rather than what you got from the passers.

I've got 10 tags and will check to see what happens. I'm expecting just 10 Pokemiles though (at which point I might as well just do GTS or wonder trade...).

I've gone through multiple Nintendo Zone locations yesterday and today, and I've gotten no Streetpasses at all. I got one when passing an actual person, but none from Nintendozones...

Is this just me? Has anyone gotten 1-6 SP from a Nintendozone spot yesterday or today?

still nothin over here, tried a few mcdonalds, gonna try best buy later on...at least ps4 launch should have some tags!

oh, what? if that's the case then that might explain something, but that's silly

When I opened the Streetpass anouncement in the Holo Caster it said that I encountered 9 people and that I got around 400 PokéMiles to commemorate it.

I will upload a pic next time :)

My 10 tags got 29...

But my point of it needing to take up one of the 12 precious streetpass slots still stands I feel (if Fire Emblem can manage somehow, so can Pokemon).

As a follow-up to my earlier post. I stopped in at a McDonald's this morning for breakfast and this time the green light kicked in after ~30 seconds.

Indeed, I feel there's a lot of wasted potential with streetpass in pokemon, imagine wonder trade with streetpass or something like the dreamworld where you could visit "neighbors"

Trading and batling online also give you Pokemiles

That is a lot of PP Ups or Rare Candys !

I've kind of been working under the assumption that if there's data for the Nintendo Zone app to download, it might do that before attempting StreetPass, thus resulting in your first location each day or so taking a lot longer. Just a theory though.

Well I passed by a few of my local Nintendo Zones and I went from 4 tags that I was saving from yesterday to 10. The most I've ever had. I felt ecstatic from getting 4 since I usually just get 1-2 if I'm lucky.I think having no game running when the system is closed must really help the range and connection.

Quick question regarding the ghost mansion game. Those stat boosting badges, do they have to be on you to work, our can you put them in your storage box and still benefit from the effects?

Also noticed a lot more people in my area playing Uprising.

I actually saw someone playing Y on their Red Pokemon 3DS and stroke a conversation about the game for a good 20 or so minutes, but DAMMIT WHY WONT YOU FLIP THAT SWITCH!?

It's worth noting that in addition to needing to have StreetPass enabled for X/Y, all non-Pokemon 3DS communications are disabled while X/Y is running, even in sleep mode I believe, unless you go into the PSS menu and disable PSS temporarily.

Wait what?! I won't get StreetPasses if X and Y are running? I didn't know you could disable the PSS.. just that there's a state where it's connected to the internet, and one where it's not. The former which wouldn't be much of an issue if you're moving around a lot anyways because it would be off.

Are you sure, I keep Pokemon in sleep mode with the PSS on and I still get streetpasses.

PSS turns off when you close your 3DS. That's why you get an error when you open it again and have to connect to the PSS once more.

(Why it doesn't do it automatically like Animal Crossing is baffling)

Hmm, I've never even considered leaving plaza Miis to accumulate. I bring them all through even if there is only 1.

Which is weird because I leave the game-specific passes to sit for days/weeks at a time.

Hmm. I think you might have something there. When I experienced that 5 minute wait for the street pass relay hit to occur at the Starbucks, a spot pass notification had loaded in at the same time as the Street Pass data (something about new content for Pokemon Mystery Dungeon).

Does anyone know if Nintendo Zone app data loads in when the connection is established? This could definitely contribute to clearing up the mystery of uneven Streetpass relays tag times.

I got the highest number of Streetpasses at once today than I ever got before (8) and their last-played games were all Pokemon. And yet, I only got 5 Streetpass tags for Pokemon. I feel like since Pokemon came out I've been getting more Streetpasses, but it's weird since the Streetpass functionality for Pokemon is actually really lame.

I stopped at my same McDonald's and got 5 passes, the most I've ever gotten in one relay. It took ~2-3 minutes for the the green light to come on. I wonder how long it will take before I get 6 somewhere.

Question: Does anyone know if you can get multiple street passes for specific games when interfacing with a Nintendo Zone relay? Today I got 5 passes at once for the Mii plaza but only one got each for a handful of different games.

Okay, no more playing Mii Force at all until I have working triggers. Playing with no triggers at all is pretty much impossible, and even Aonuma's extra option ship couldn't save it.

If nothing else, Pokemon is getting me a lot of new Streetpass people. Not necessarily more than before, but new faces.
