I don't know if it means anything, but on my Miiverse profile page I have faint silhouettes of a 3DS and a Wii U gamepad on the top right of the screen. Can anyone without their NNID linked to a Wii U see if only the 3DS shows up?

Go to Settings->Other Settings-> scroll to rightmost tab-> press "System Update"

This update doesn't affect anything related to friend features.
Sadly no. As of right now you still need them for adding friends. Hopefully now that we have NNIDs we're one step closer to allowing people to be added that way.

Linked my NNID to my 3DS. My brother will link his to his 3DS XL.
I'm guessing Club Nintendo will be an issue, since we're now going off IDs instead of systems. Before the Wii U or 3DS would link to the CN account, automatically putting post-play surveys in my to-do list.
Now I take it that only my NNID will link to my Club Nintendo account? So if my brother purchases anything on his 3DS XL or our Wii U with his ID then it won't link to CN?
I'll have to look into this.

I created my NNID one a friends Wii U. I linked that one to my 3DS just now. Reading around the settings info, it seems the only way to deactivate a NNID from a system is via System Format. I don't want to make my friend do thay just to free up my NNID. Can I delete it and then remake it?
Would doing so effect my 3DS's eShop downloads? I haven't bought anything after the 3DS update, I never even used it on his Wii U and I don't have any wallet funds. However, I do have a decent amount of 3DS eShop purchases from before the update.

Welp, just tried to update my 3DS, and it crashes anytime wireless is on. What do I do GAF?
Nope, it's a unique name in their DB. You'll be fine.

I'd call Nintendo in this situation to be safe. If you've already linked your system to the NNID then all your purchases should now be tied to it, so you don't want to just delete the ID.
Not unless they have your password and email address.

My secret favorite thing about this update is the removal of the system transfer limit. I was thinking of switching to the Zelda 3DS XL just because it's so damn sleek and because I love me some LE Zelda goodies, and if I do it'll be nice to not have to worry about being one system transfer closer to never again being able to get a new handheld and still keep my data.
Also, shared account balances for the win. So happy about that. Finally! And since nothing of note has come out on the Wii U eShop in quite awhile, I'm going to use my Wii U eShop money from the account merge to get the rest of the SEGA 3D Classics as they come out!

3DS shop working and I see my credit.
Nice. Wish I didn't have to use Snipping Tool to get the screenshot from the Miiverse page, and Miiverse on 3DS is really slow, which isn't surprising considering RAM constraints on 3DS. Still really cool that it's on there.
