4 Guys 1UP - 01/01/2010 - Constantine Hantzopoulos

Nice episode. Hearing Constantine makes me want to care about Ironman 2. I wonder what that exciting project was the he worked on for three years which was then canned.

I think David Ellis deserves a lot of kudos for what he has done with this podcast.

There are already a dozen gaming podcasts that use the exact same formula and cover the same games. I've found my rotation of podcasts continually pared down - there's really no reason to listen to more than a couple when they all overlap so highly. Turning 4 Guys 1 Up into something different is great. Like it or not you have to admit that it has unique content.

There is a lot of room in the video game media for things other than previews and reviews. There is so much media but very little talk about the business of games, the process of making games, anything about trends or bigger picture stuff, game design, etc. These guests are covering fresh territory.

I hope if Yakuza 3 is dubbed, you have the option for Japanese VA. I hate dubbing in anything and it really annoyed me in the original.

For someone I've never heard of he was really interesting. It's a shame that his comments on the Wii have already stirred quite a bit of noise, as I really liked his honesty on the subjects that were brought up and want to hear more insights like that.

"Are we going to do more mature Wii games...? Probably not."

He says Conduit and Mad World have done okay, but I think if you read the lines he implies that any old junk would have sold about as well as those and they're better off not putting in so much effort.
Yeah, it sounds like an opportunity cost problem. And if he can put his studios to work doing 40 person teams like he had with Monolith, I'm sure he'd rather be doing that.

Considering VC, and a lot of Sega games actually have dual audio, why the hell would you buy the import. It's not like they are SE.

Because it'd be about 20 dollars cheaper, even imported

That being said, if the Japanese is left in I'll probably buy it domestically just to "vote with my dollars"

I'd like to also throw some new year's props at David Ellis for the new direction he's taken the podcast. Focusing on industry people and their opinions outside of whatever they're shilling makes for a great listen.

At this point, I'd rather see a week taken off of the schedule if it meant keeping every show focused around a guest.

Another good episode. Like others have said, having something a bit different from the usual news stories that are done to death and all the other podcasts. Only so many times you can here peoples thoughts on the "No Russian" mission or latest Modern Warfare bug.

Con is a riot. I worked with him on Condemned 2. The guy is a walking history book on the gaming industry. I'd personally would love to see Con write a tell all book!!! :lol :lol

This isn't a complaint, really, and I appreciate a recording this week. This is essentially what I don't want from guests, though: vocal tics, narrow view of the industry, tactfully hedging one's assertions, lack of interesting stories or experiences, little insight and humor.

I know they'll pop up now and again, but I thought Hantzopoulos was nondescript (critically, since his views formed the entire show). Too many of these in a row would be boring, but I can't complain about a misfire during vacations.

Also, I'm not sure he'd accept, but I submit Jordan Morris of Fuel TV/Jordan, Jesse, Go/other stuff for an industry person. Technically, he's "press," but he does so for a nontraditional outlet, he knows a lot, he'ss hilarious, et cetera.
you know, in hindsight, I'm not sure that we listened to the same show

As someone else who has heard Constantine on other podcasts (Giant Bombcast?), it did not feel as though he added much new. I have hopes that Iron Man 2 won't be as horrible as the demo I played for IM1, but at the same time....I'm sure that the people behind the first game didn't set out to make something bad. (The game can't get a dozen more content passes, because the launch will be tied to the film; it's the peril of movie tie-ins.)

A day after listening to the podcast, it doesn't stick with me the way that last week's show did. While it may be fun to hear that Don Cheadle has pull with Samuel Jackson, it doesn't match up with high-end, where-the-industry-is-going discussion. I would have been more interested in his thoughts on making Iron Man 2 more like Spider-Man 2 (the game) and less like MUA 2, or the difficulties inherent in making a movie game itself (beyond likeness and voice talent). Great that he's 'in the trenches' with the staff and all, but he didn't say much about the results of that work. That being said, I'm far more likely to pick up Johnny English's Game Pro than I am IM2 (and I'm a Marvel zombie who loved the first movie), so it has a relevance advantage.

Yeah. It's back to navel gazing. Lordy the lord knows 1up loves to do it. It's fun for a while, but there's only so much "we're awesome because we work in this industry, and these are our awesome stories" I can bear. I mean, videogames. Talk about them.

I'm thankful we got another show where other podcasts took their break.

What I don't get is why 1UP (not necessarily David) hasn't followed up on some of the points that were made in the podcast? Especially if you've been sitting on the interview for a few weeks you could have gotten some "exclusive" follow ups to interesting topics that originated on your very own show.

Two examples that have generated media interest since the show aired:

We have the confusion about the Yakuza dubbing situation that 1UP could have cleared up right away because only you knew of the remarks that were made.

And we have Sega's interesting stance on mature Wii games that was proclaimed. You could have tried to investigate that a little more while you have a few weeks head start. Even if you had just gotten pr along the lines that the Wii remains an important platform for Sega it still would have been something.

I can see why you don't might want to "burn" your guests by publicly second guessing every second statement they make, but at least the Yakuza stuff you could have cleared up yourselves. You missed out on some site hits in my opinion.

I'm inundated with talk about the latest hot video games. There's a million other gaming podcasts that talk about that. I'm glad there's currently one that is doing this.

I wish that were the case. With Idle Thumbs gone, Giant Bomb is the only remaining gaming podcast that can stay reasonably on topic, and even there you have your recurring food segments 'n'shit. I like 4g1u. I'll keep listening. Just not happy with how this particular episode went.

I enjoyed the Constantine podcast for its Sega stories. I wouldn't mind it if some other guest from 2K Games or SCEA came on and shared insight on some of the projects they worked on or whatever.

I was damn amazed by the fact that he worked a game for 3 years and it never saw the light of day; not even an announcement. I'm sure it happens all the time, but we never hear about it.

"Sometimes all I want to do is, you know, plop down on the couch, crack a brew, play with my bros"

:lol

Fucking dudebro stereotype master. That was pretty obnoxious. Still a great episode, but despite him, not because of him.
