- 'Salvation of a Saint', Keigo Higashino - I enjoyed this, very easy reading, but not as good as Higashino's 'Naoko' or 'Devotion of Suspect X', the translation was rather flat on this one as well, still I recommend it as a good crime/thriller novel
- 'Pygmalion', George Bernard Shaw - The classic play of a flower girl from the slums turned into a lady, very enjoyable and quite funny

Very impressive. Some already made their way through their first book!
I'll most likely finish A Clash of Kings somewhat next week and will count it as one book since I already read about 400 pages last year and have another 500 open.

These three were more interesting ideas and concepts than good movies.
Pandorum had an aweful cut and the idea had much more potential - I liked the cast though. There are way to few space-horror movies nowadays, so sadly this one was wasted.

I Saw the Devil was a cut german version. The movie is a revenge movie gone mad. Some interesting stuff, but the german dub and the obviously cut parts hurt it.

The Joneses was a neat little idea, with Duchovny in Hank mode. Nothing special though.

I hope there will be a lot of people who'll post their impressions about the stuff they read/watch, since I'm always open for suggestions, especially when I'm done with Kings (and Homicide after that).

We can't really go through each case, and to be honest, it's really up to you. This is all on you. You only have your self to let down.

If an example helps: last year I read a comic book called The Rainbow Orchid [I wanted to read at least one graphic novel or equivalent]. There are 3 volumes. I counted all three volumes in 1 entry:
1, all three volumes amount to one feature length story.
2. I read the single full size comic book length version.
3. The book [set in the last century] talks about some events that actually happened, and it's kinda cool to match up and look those things up.
4. It took me about a week to read it and consume all of it. [If I didn't take in any of the illustrations, and read it like a nine year old me, I guess I could have read it in one or two sittings]


And then there was an art book, called Reading Women. I felt guilty having to count this; it's very short on words, [even though I counted at least one five hundred pages + book as one and not two, so I had leverage anyway]; but like all art books, you go deeper and deeper, and the book took a long time, really to consume. I didn't count all those other books and wiki links and material associated with this one Art book and it's master thesis; but I feel now that it warranted a place on my list. I read a lot of excellent books and this, for me, was right up there. Not much on the top, but a lot underneath.

It's really up to you. No reason why at the end of the year, you can't remove certain entries, because you know, you ought not to count it.

bt - good film, very sad and i really enjoyed the character development in it as well as the unusual father-son relationship.
bm - solid tragic love story elevated by great acting and lots of nice scenery porn - having the pain of the story set within the still, peaceful natural beauty was very effective. i wanted a bit more of the opening though, where they're first falling for eachother, more to explore there. also how many beautiful people are there in this film good lord, it was already ridiculous with the main couples then linda cardenelli appears.

also read about 100 pages of 'never let me go' too so hopefully i can get the first book down soon and get ahead.

Movie 01 - Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days
I enjoyed it more that the first Wimpy Kid movie. This one felt more like a summer movie I would have watched as a kid. In many ways the wimpy kid hit a little too close to home. I never thought of myself as "wimpy" but looking back on my childhood I probably was :( Lots of funny moments but it never felt like the movie was trying too hard.

For books I just finished up Seraphina before the new year so I won't count that but I do have a few books which I am ~50% in but haven't touched in awhile. I think I work on finishing those up next.

  • Indie Game: The Movie -- 8/10, really excellent look into the world of independent game development. I must be living under a rock because I've never heard of Fez before. My favorite story focused on the Super Meat Boy team. I haven't played the game yet, but it was a joy to see such nice dudes succeed. Jonathan Blow tried to argue that he isn't a pretentious ass...by acting like a pretentious ass. No surprise there.

You thought Jonathan Blow was pretentious in that movie? It totally redeemed him imo. I always thought his opinions were insubstantial in interviews, but I became a fan due to Indie Game.

Phil Fish is the one who I lost respect for.

The boyfriend and I originally dismissed Drag Me to Hell due to the trailer thinking it would just be a boring horror film. Glad I finally got around to watch it. Very fun though some bits were too long. I'm also glad that Christine
died though the ending was pretty telegraphed

Books are on there way, I'm just finishing up The Fellowship of the Ring. I spent most of my day reading it. Very enjoyable and adds a lot compared with the film adaptations.

I don't mind the way he presented himself or spoke...it was how butthurt he got about the reception to his game. He got mad at people because they "didn't understand" his game? What a blowhard. Once you release your art out there to the consumer, you cease to have a say in what it means to them. He was offended that Soulja Boy types (I mean, REALLY, WTF did he expect there?) viewed the game as a gimmicky Mario clone. Tough.

I like Braid and think it has an interesting story. But gameplay wise, it is Mario with a time control mechanism. It's basically a well-polished Blinx in 2D. That's how I viewed it. The fact that he went on a tirade on review sites and message boards to try and shape the conversation is ridiculous.

Also, yes, Phil Fish came across as madly insecure and in need of validation.

Was he offended at the Soulja Boy thing? The film uses that footage to suggest that, but he never mentions it. I don't know if he has talked about it outside of the film. I tried to put myself in his shoes where he makes a game with the soul purpose of putting himself into it and most people completely miss that. I would be upset too. I wouldn't suggest that it's necessarily the peoples fault, but I can understand why he feels the way he does.

I actually enjoyed the Total Recall remake. It wasn't great or as good as the original, but it was decent with great special effects. I really loved the design of the Colony city.

I did feel like the movie was more focused on Kate Beckinsale than anyone though.

I'm on vacation until the 18th. Right now I am visiting my kid so I get to watch movies while he is in school. However, when I go back to L.A. on the 7th I will watch finish off the movies before shooting and classes start.

I thought he made a good case for his guiding the conversations as a way to help people get more out of the game than it was covering up butthurt.

I still don't think Braid was well written, and I never really got the huge positive reception (outside of it being one of the first big, solid indie titles on XBLA). But I ended the film liking Blow a lot more as a person, and excited for what he does next.
