50 years ago Today Walt Disney died

From what I've seen, Trump's views on racial and religious minorities aren't as complex as Disney's were. Disney's films had many Jewish and black stereotypes, but he employed Jews and black people and supported Jewish charities, and I swear I've read somewhere that he tried to reach out to the NAACP in some relation to Song of the South, though I don't recall whether it was during the production or after the negative reactions.
You're saying Trump doesn't hire Jews, blacks or women? Trump also denies he's racist and sexist, and tried to reach out to minorities. So he must not actually be a bigot huh? But if he is, I'm sure its just because he's a product of the times.

Is he really dead if his head is frozen in the Main Street USA Firehouse?

That being said, he would probably be thrilled at the propaganda empire Disney has become.

Disneyworld (and Epcot) were places you enjoyed as a kid, though eh during your growing up phase and as an adult you come to appreciate it again. That's how I felt when I went back last September. Racism and anti-Semitism allegations aside, he truly was a brilliant man.

Just want to throw out there that the PBS American Experience documentary on Walt Disney is outstanding. I highly recommend seeking it out if you haven't seen it.

I'm back from the freezer, fellas! Tell me, how did my experimental prototype community of tomorrow do?

...what do you mean, big golf ball?

I love a lot of his work minus the obvious racist stuff, which was unfortunately all too common back then. I don't like how the juxtaposition of his business savvy and advocation of "magic" led to today's Disney turning "magic" into a buzzword and a bit of a cult mentality.

Good guy.

Recommend this amazing, comprehensive biography. Expands in areas the PBS documentary, a great documentary in its own right, only grazes over. Only kidding about the "good guy" comment, the jury's still out but he's a massively interesting figure.

The first hand accounts of people who knew him, vary pretty strongly from the vague public reputation he holds today. The book actually goes into the origins of some of the anti-semite accusations, and other speculation. (Communist paranoia)

Trump brags about employing X group of people all the time.

Anyone interested in Walt should watch this PBS American Experience doc on him:

Really fascinating stuff. I really appreciate the Disney company and what they produce, but Walt was kind of an enormous douchebag. Staunchly anti-union, and he also named names at the McCarthy hearings regarding communist activity in Hollywood.

This.

People who haven't seen this need to watch it before it's removed on 12/29/2016. At almost 4 hours long it's most likely the definitive documentary on Walt Disney's life and career.

Disney is a great business in how he was able to make his empire on public domain work and yet get the government to change copyright laws so his works don't go into public domain.

He was accused of being racist and antisemitic long before Family Guy existed though.
Yes but that's definitely whats popularized the notion.

oh it's definitely not created by family guy haha. those sentiments have been well known for awhile. my grandpa mentioned it to me when i was a kid watching disney movies
I didn't mean to imply that Family Guy created it but they definitely made a lot of people aware of it.

The Trump comparisons are ridiculous because a huge of Trump's appeal this past election cycle has been tied to racism, whereas Disney's racism is comparatively more of a footnote. He was racist, but it was far from a defining element of him or his work aside from Song of the South. Trump is racist by modern standards, but Disney was not nearly as so considering his time's standards. Hell, Trump may have been racist by the standards of Disney's time, considering his KKK appeal.

I think that's mainly because of Family Guy, isn't it? People saw the joke and just kind of ran with it. Same way people go 'Matt Damon' whenever you say his name.

I agree with you but also him to an extent. It's no doubt that because of Family Guy and the like Walt Disney has been unfairly called out for the bullshit he did rather than the list of other artists which the person you're replying to referred to.

Can you explain to me how Song of the South and the Peter Men Native American song were racist? They may be insensitive, but it doesn't reflect racism. Keep in mind that being a racist is to believe that a particular race is superior to another..
I can't stand when people try to define racism for other people. Such bullshit.

Kudos to him for making a movie that will never get released physically or digitally in the US but continues to be used as a way to make money.

One day Disney will pull the trigger and do it but i just find it hilarious how they try to profit on the animated segments and music.

Splash Mountain is literally Song of the South: The Ride. But Disney never makes mention of that themselves. It's kind of sad because Splash Mountain is my favorite ride at Disney World, but it's based on fucking Song of the South.

Oh yeah, and I rewatched Peter Pan recently and holy shit is that movie racist, whether intentional or not.

I still love plenty of Disney films and Disney World. But yeah, I can see why people get upset about these things.

I mean I love Disney movies and I appreciate what the man did for animation and popular culture. But I can't stand people trying to defend the racism, its disgusting.
