Hows the sound though?

Pretty damn great. Cord doesn't get that annoying if you wear them over the ears either. I mean, $25 for these? Hell yeah, great beater pair. I like them more than my Eternas, not as wild in the bass department (though they still have great bass and sub bass and are a bit clearer than the Eternas) they have much better highs and I'm very pleased with the soundstage and imaging. Stock tips are great as well.

A couple of guys with the Sony MH1C might be able to chime in but I think that phone has a flat cable, which should be tangle resistant. Best cable I've had for that purpose was the cloth sheathed DDM cable, but the trade off was that the cable was also highly microphonic. Westone elite series cables are very supple and resist kinking but even those aren't immune to tangling. I dunno, point being, I think every cable has its share of issues no matter what the price point or material.

Thanks I'll check those out.

$25 and Prime shipping? Shiieett. Really tempted just for the amazing price. Although I really shouldn't cause if anything, I need to downsize the number of phones I have. The sheer redundancy in my collection should be pared down so I could fund an uber purchase or something :l Been eyeballing the hell out of the FitEar 334. Some guy beat me to the punch on a pair on headfi, otherwise I'd be quite a bit poorer for it

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
So I was thinking about getting some Fischer Audio Consonance IEMs, but they seem to be easier found in the EU than in NA outside of one site. Even then I'm not 100% sold yet.

Any recomendations to something similar IEM wise? I listen to a lot of varry sub genres of electronic music as well as other things like indie, rap, prog, metal, jazz on occassion. I lean towards electonic music mostly though at least lately.

Got my K501s today. Dat soundstage.

I missed having soundstage. It really makes watching movies awesome, since, with the lights off, you can almost picture yourself in a theater. It's a very wide soundstage, with decent depth, and stellar rear-projection. I'll have to see how that translates to games later. I've really only had the chance to test these with music and a movie.

The other nice thing these do over the CD900STs is the sparkly treble. It give instruments like cymbals, high hats, and even acoustic guitars a really realistic quality.

On the flip side, there are some things they don't do as well as the CD900STs: namely the mids. While they still have fantastic mids, they aren't even in the same league as the CD900STs. Much less micro detail, less body, and with some recordings, they can be a bit sibilant (especially since I haven't got a comfortable listening level dialed in yet).

Bass is also much lighter. I didn't think it was possible to get much lighter than the CD900STs, but AKG sure managed it. It's not really a big deal, since I don't listen to bass-heavy music, but it'd be sure nice for rock to have a little more thump on the drums or if bass guitars didn't sound like they were set back 20 feet. It is very detailed though, I'll give it that.

Still, I'm glad I traded. They're breathing new life into my music, and the comfort makes it possible to listen to music for hours on end.

GAF,

I am looking for a pair of good headphones for my upcoming trip. Something to work well with my iPhone / iPad.

I was looking at these:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0042A68R8/?tag=neogaf0e-20

I really do not want to pay more than 100 and this is going a little over. I know you guys rave about the HD 558's but at 180 I just don't know if I really want to swing that much money. Again, these are just for my iPhone / iPad. Not a gaming PC or anything like that. What do you guys think?

You say they are for a trip. Will they be used on a plane or public transport or something? These are open cans so that may not be the best idea (others will hear, and sound will leak in a lot). They also aren't super portable/not collapsible.

Yeah I will be on a plane for about 4 hours. Plus I just want a nice set a headphones for when I am at home. So what would you recommend, the 558's? Are those "Closed"?

It seems Amazon.co.uk discounted the HD650 to much less than the HE-400 would cost me without shipping and velour pads today. (with a 20 GBP voucher to boot)
It also saves me the trouble of wrestling with HMRC too. So bought! Should have them in tomorrow with prime. They extended the return period for Christmas too so if I don't like them I can return them until the 31st of January.
EXCITE!

I guess if it were me I wouldn't make my decision based on a 4 hour flight so I don't really know what to say, you know? The 558 is also open.

Good portable closed cans would be something like the Audio Technica M50, Shure 840, or Sony MDR 7506.

anyone know of any good sites for reviews? dont really trust pcmag cnet.

innerfidelity. written plus video reviews. plus measurements to compare the listening impressions to measured data. it can be useful. range of reviews from popular rapper cans to high end stax.

I hesitate to say headfonia even though I go there. I feel the reviewer gets a little too carried away with some "new toys". But, still, lots of reviews of varied equipment from one set of ears and some nice pics, too.

and, if you have the time needed to weed through the head-fi.org forums, you'll find some good reviews. but there's a lot of people there who get one decent headphone and then proclaim it the best. the folks with more experience usually provide more balanced impressions - but you need to read enough posts to know their preferences.

This may be a thread fowl, but I'm asking here because this is an active thread on audio equipment.

I want to start making my own electronic musics and stuff, and thought about asking for a drum machine, or some sort of synthesizers. My dad already has an electronic keyboard that I could borrow and I was planning on picking up a DAW for my laptop.

I guess my question is what sort of device should I be looking for to start off down this musical pursuit. I think the most important thing is to be able to layout drum beats mostly, then synthesize stuff over it.

Maybe something classic and from Roland, I really don't know.

Aurisonics pricing just hit for the ASG-2. $500 MSRP and there's gonna be a special one day price for new owners on the 7th. Dale also said there will be something "epic" in store for all ASG-1 owners in regards to upgrades. Can't flipping wait to see how they stack up to the FitEar TG!334

Well, I did not want to spend 180 bucks and I took your advice and got these:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ULAP4U/?tag=neogaf0e-20

105 dollars is much more reasonable. Thanks for your help!

That's a good price for the M50 and I think you'll be happy. Of the 3 I mentioned those have the "boomiest" sound (not anywhere near the levels of something like the Sony XB500 or Beats) and are the most comfortable. They are still fairly neutral sounding.

Check out the Soundmagic HP100, and make sure you read the first review up on Amazon.
These seem really interesting and economical; not familiar with the brand at all! They don't seem to offer any sort of iPhone compatibility, though. Is there a third-party cable I could get to add that? I've looked for one for my PXC 450s for years to no avail.
I've listened to my work pair of Momentum's enough (took 'em home a few times) that I'm going to order two pairs; one for me and one for the wife. I love them.
They're that nice, huh? How's the bass? And how are they at blocking out noise? I'm on the subway 90+ minutes a day.

So a pair of Audio Technica M50's arrived from Amazon today...

I've upgraded from my last pair, a gaming headset, also my second of the same kind that broke (It's been patched up with electrical tape for weeks, did not work well! :p)

Well, I discovered this thread and did some light research, and the M50s seemed the best option, though reviews warned of the pressure it applies to the head.

And there sure is pressure! Kinda uncomfortable after a while, and hurts the jaw when talking or eating. But oh well, hopefully I'll get used to it.

It won't.

Some people put them on a wide stack of books overnight. Quicker to just do it by hand though and you don't have to take the pads off (to keep them from flattening on the books).

Love the thread title. It's mostly what keeps bringing me back.

I'm between the Sony v6 and the xb500 and leaning toward the xb since I enjoy the boom so much. Any thoughts on what I'd be missing out on in makin that decision? Or any suggestions given a <100 price range?

This thread has been a blast to read through and catch up on.

With the XB500's you'll lose a great deal of clarity in the mids and highs. The V6's are much better in this regard, or if you can get a pair of XB700's they do a decent job with mids and highs, and still retain absurd amounts of bass.

Noontec Zoro

or

JVC HA-S500

or

Denon HP700

All would be better choices IMO.

Just curious have you ever sat and listened to a more neutral studio monitor for any length of time? Basically just wondering if you truly like the boom more or if you just think you do.

Did you know Halo invented the FPS?
Headphones are the biggest guilty pleasure purchases ever. I just ordered a DT 880 pro and I already own the Denon D2000s and Sennheiser HD 598. It's like you simply want everything but you only have 2 ears :(

Yeah, luckily headphones have an amazing resell value so I could always make some money back if I'm ever in a pitch. Feelsgood to be single male with disposable income lol

Thanks for the suggestions, Des. I'm gonna read through those reviews tonight.

I have not so my wanting something with a lot of bass may just be a prejudice decision. The best headphones I've listened through were the free ones at Amoeba Music and I think those were Sony zx100. Lots of room to grow.

Yeah, it's kind of like when I tell people that my headphones cost X dollars and they say "What?! I would never spend that much on 'just' headphones." Then I let them to listen to them and they go "Oh...woah." The jump from Apple earbuds to $100 M50 is world-shattering.

I want the Denon 5000's but I missed out on them :(

So did I. Was truly bummed when I found out they were discontinued. Now their used price has shot up.

I'd like to get myself a new pair of earphones for christmas, but I can't really decide which one from the OP to get. My budget's 200$ and I'm mostly listening to Metal, but also to orchestras and soundtracks. Any recommendations?
I'm an audio layman. So far I've used the earphones that came with the iPhone, so I guess independent of which ones I buy, it will be a huge difference.

I'm looking for some help when it comes to a portable amp. I have a pair of Klipsch S4i's and Creative Aurvana Live! (on the recommendation of this thread, and I love them). I listen to music on my iPhone 5 and MacBook and would like more volume especially from my iPhone. Also I at times run an AUX cable from my iPhone to my car radio and would like a volume increase there. So basically I'm looking for something that can be used with my MacBook Pro, and my iPhone and I know almost nothing about the world of portable amps and DAC's. I've been looking at Fiio stuff, but I don't know if they are the best option. My budget is probably $150. Any help you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The $30 i spent on the CAL!'s may be the best deal i will ever have in my lifetime.

I honestly like them more than i did my HD580 and HD600.

Anyone know a thing about sound cards?

Sometimes when I close a game or a game crashes, there's a permanent machine gun/clicking sound that doesn't go away if I restart my PC.

Anyone know a fix? Would taking out the sound card a plugging it back in fix the problem?

I know it isn't my headset, because the noise goes away if I use the on-board jack.

Just finished modding my HA-RX700 with dynamat and some polyfill. I know they are some crappy, cheap headphones, but they sound good to me!

Can anyone educate me on the correct way to burn them in? Is that even necessary?

If the build quality were just a bit better they'd be all I'd recommend under a hundred bucks.

More volume from your iPhone? The S4is aren't the most demanding phones, heck they were made for the iPhone lol. I've never had volume issues even with the RE262 and that phone has an impedance rating of 150 OHMs vs the 18 OHMs of the Klipsch

Anyway; I would definitely recommend that you pick up a line out dock for your new amp. Running an aux cable to an amp distorts the sound. FiiO makes a couple of cheap ones you can check out
