60 fps is the minimum game should aim for.

This

But the argument is always framed as "you JuSt want better graphics"

Yes but I also want better physics, destruction, more AIs, bigger levels, better AI, better hit responses.

PC gamers with there multi thousand pound rigs are effected as badly as anyone else as no game now will push them like they did in the past.

But it falls on deaf ears despite nearly every new game announcement people express disappointment at the game looking not much different from the previous generations. Ghost of Yotei being the prime example at the moment.
You know about diminishing returns and slow progress?
Processing power doesn't advanced as used in the past due for the end of the dennard scaling and the slowdown of moore's law.

Look at this two games that are 7 years apart

anything lower than 60fps gives me a head ache

i cant go to the cinema anymore because the frame rate is awful

Yes

It's unfortunate if we're at the point where we can no longer make significant progress towards those aspects.

Aren't 90% of all console games coming out with options for either performance or fidelity these days? I mean, 60fps is almost always an option now. What's the big deal?

The increased responsiveness and lower latency of key/button inputs alone makes higher fps unbeatable, just play a game thats taxing your system -> crank everything up to eleven -> look at the sky so you have 60+ fps -> press a few buttons -> look into the scene proper so that you hover around 30 fps -> press a few buttons again -> feel the difference of the input lag and mouse/stick movement.

Imagine the jaw-dropping visuals of games like *Starfield*, but as the standard for this generation. That could've been our reality if 30fps had been embraced as the default. 🙄 The truth is, new games often feel underwhelming because big studios have diluted their talent pools with mediocrity. Instead of pushing the boundaries of what current consoles can do, developers lean on crutches like ray tracing to cut corners and streamline production, sacrificing innovation for efficiency. The framerate isn't the issue, it's the games industry.

At end of the day they are video games and you want your game feel great to play....so from my perspective I prefer higher FPS over graphical detail any day.
Then go play games from the gen before. Many people want new experiences not cross gen 60fps games

I dont know if being cross gen or not has anything to do with it....there are games released only on PS5 that prioritize frame rate because most devs want their games feel great to play.

I mean ray tracing is meant to more accurately portray how light works, along with being dynamic. Hardware just isn't improving at a pace to pull the effect off without noticeably compromise, and we're hitting limits of detail that is even noticeable like peach fuzz on Aloy in Horizon Forbidden West.

There is indeed a talent pool problem, but hardware just isn't advancing to power the jumps we used to get, and that's why companies are trying to showcase stuff like neural rendering with AI because rasterization advances are a dead-end.

Even on my PC with a 4080 i limit the fps to 60. That enough for me. 120+fps and the wear and tear on the components, the higher electric bill and the higher fan speed are my reasons for the fps limit. It's very very playable at 60 fps

60 FPS doesn't look too good on fast paced games anymore. This is due to the combination of fast response time + reduced retention blur of modern OLED displays.

This is extremely noticeable in 2D side scrolling games.
