"Dale Grant, a U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist in Golden, Colorado, told Reuters there had been no quakes this large in Haiti for more than 200 years.

"There were two major quakes there in 1751 and 1770 but, since then, there has not been a quake of this magnitude," Grant said. "

I have no way to reach my father he lives in Port-Au-Prince

this sucks, I know those houses can't stand that kind of shaking

when the death tolls start rolling in I don't think it will be very low :(

I don't even know what to say

This sucks.

Me and my family can't reach my grandpa, my aunt, my cousins or my godmother; they live by Port-au-Prince. :(

I dunno what the fuck we're going to do.

I feel bad for you guys. :( Hope you guys are able to get in touch with your families soon, man. This is terrible.

.....Old Home Town

You suppose to see the city from there GAF
Shit. Can you give some more details for people who have never seen that area? Is that fog or smoke? Would you normally be seeing buildings above that level?

Thoughts go out to all affected people. :-(

its dawn so im not thinking fog, and know the homes and buildings are mostly cement and stones, im thinking its dust.

the girl says/pointed to a big fire a far.

"The United States Geological Survey recorded at least six aftershocks in the two hours after the main earthquake. They measured approximately 5.9, 5.5, 5.1, 4.8, 4.5, and 4.5."

I don't even want to believe that video
if its dust then everything got flattened

dust is nothing new in Haiti though most streets are just dirt and nothing else

Survivors from the collapsed buildings will surely suffocate if that really is dust...

Oh God. Haiti was having enough troubles before...
Hopefully more info is released soon and countries will send aid.

Please tell me that isn't all dust from rubble :(

She says "There was an earthquake. There is a fire...there is a fire...there. There are many broken buildings. But we are ok. Line is there and we are ok."

So it's dust and smoke I guess.

Casualties are gonna be high...

^ The more I look at this picture, though, I'm thinking it's from Sichuan province, China.

holy shit....

:(

At least the tsunami watch got called off...It would be horrible if this caused damage in other parts of the Caribbean.

I live in DR, I didn't felt it but a lot of people did, especially in the tall office buildings, everyone was running out of them after the quake hit, my family is from a small town near Haiti and apparently there are trucks flipped some collapse homes and split open streets.

Everyone seems to be losing their shit over a Tsunami alert, I gotta ask the Haitian that works in the building about his family if he shows up tomorrow.

I'm very glad my students came back from there last week. It's got to be the least-lucky place to live in the world. PEACE.

God Haiti just can't catch a break. It's already pretty much the most screwed up and least developed country in the entire western hemisphere...

Man, my condolences to everyone with family there. That looks terrible.

What language is that girl speaking in the video?

Which video? It's either French or Creole.

The one where it looks like they are viewing the city from a residence up on a mountain. You can't see anything for the dust. I would guess they are the very rich people of Haiti.

Mostly French.

Dominican gaf sends it's condolences and hopefully AID soon to our neighbors , after seeing the pictures I can't believe the extent of the damage... God damn.

Best wishes from NYC DR gaf.

Here are a few organizations mounting already to go help and needing donations. If you can spare a few bucks, plenty of organizations to choose from.

Be careful when you donate. Back in 2004, when Hurricane Jeanne happened, people in Quebec (Canada) gave a lot of money and clothes, but we found out months later that the money didn't even reach Haiti and clothes were still at the port because of some dispute.

Give, but only to reliable organization.

this fucked up my mood... now I have to wait for news of family the phones to Haiti are always jammed as is

Have you heard anything from there? No one in my family's been able to get a hold of my grandfather.

Yeah I haven't been able to get in contact with my family down here. My brother was planning on making a trip to help out a few orphanages in Port-au-Prince, but those plans are off.

It looks like the quake struck most of my relatives' areas and also a few places from my mom's childhood.
