8-4 Play 9/9/2011 [feat. Ryan Payton]

I think John's point did make sense. Not for Limbo specifically because he probably didn't know it was ever coming to PSN, but if he thinks the focus on Kinect indicates MGS are happy to chase whichever audience is most ripe, not support the core audience they've built, that does say something about their corporate culture that someone could justifiably find objectionable.

Honestly, I thought John was in the right because that's his own conscious decision. Of course now we know why feels so strongly on the matter.

Only halfway and this episode is incredible. So many interesting discussions and Payton is great on it. The Mark vs Ryan debate about the 3DS was pretty entertaining.

Ryan's point on Uncharted is something I never hear anyone talk about but that I noticed myself only a few minutes into the game. I would really like to hear his full talk.

The fact that Drake kills tons of people gets brought up all the time. It even gets brought in the game by the final boss. But most players and reviewers don't mind it because, unlike Ryan, they find the shooting gameplay in Uncharted to be high quality and a lot of fun.

It was interesting to hear him say he isn't a journalist so he can have a favourite. I never thought there was any legitimate reason why a journalist can't prefer one system over another.

He did allude to something earlier in the show I'm pretty sure I've heard him say before. When talking about those 360 exclusive JRPGs from earlier in the generation, he said he thought it was more Sony failing than MS winning, and while I disagree in those examples, MS threw a ton of cash around, and more importantly, lots of dev kits and tech support for those devs. But I do think MS has pretty much haphazardly gained it's position. The only thing they make I care about it Halo, and they've lost the original Halo team, I have no reason to believe Halo 4 will be good, let alone a worthy successor to Reach.

I do believe MS were just very lucky SCEJ fucked up so incredibly hard. If they didn't include BluRay, they could have launched earlier, for considerably cheaper. World wide the two are neck and neck, despite MS's significant headstart and cheaper retail price. They would have been slaughtered.

Interesting to hear Mark point out the lack of announced "big" Vita games, a fact that not many people seem to address. I'm sure that may change after TGS, though.

Is mark still going "uuuu" or "uuumhh" in every other sentence? I'm not even kidding when I say it's getting really annoying and he need to stop it, but I want to listen to the podcast anyway. It's like I'm slowly going insane and he knows it.

I was thinking about counting every time he says ummm or uuuuhh, and account one second for every time and see how many minutes per podcast he accumulates.
I do that sometimes as compensation for stuttering. Figure an "umm" is better than 30 seconds of trying to get words to come out.

Payton?!? \o/

That seems like a cynical way of looking at it.

Considering he and crew live/work in Japan where the 360 is now done, I thought his was merely mirroring that when he shared his feelings on the show.

A little bit of trolling here but john contradicted himself from 2 episodes ago(when he said they will admit when games they work on are no good):

We only work on games we know are great

HAHA, Ryan calling out John on his PS3 preference. I liked that debate.

I'm with John on that one.

Oh and John, I found it funny you forgot that your year of XBL Gold was bundled with Monster Hunter Frontier :lol

The reason Sony got anywhere with the original Playstation is because Nintendo and Sega fucked up and took too long to get back on their feet. Microsoft is faster learner and they have bet on the right things like online multiplayer and 3rd party exclusives that helped put a stake in the ground for experiences like Call of Duty, Halo, etc.

Spilled milk. Cry moar. Whatever. Sony has a ton of work to do to earn back the shit ton of market share they lost. If they let MS go first again next gen it's going to be very difficult times for them.

None of what you said even contradicted my post, so what exactly was your point?

Wow... ok, I'm listening to the Dragon Quest segment, and hearing the sales figures for DQ 4, 5, 6, and 9 are really depressing.

4, 5, 6 - each sold less than 100,000?
9 - sold less than 200,000?

WHAT THE FUCK

Cracking episode(as usual).

Depressing to hear how poor of a job Capcom have done with MHHD, when you consider how good the God of War PSP ports are.

Ending was amazing lol.

Ryan, the issue isn't with being able to avoid kinect, but that Microsoft is putting most of their resources behind it. So the people that dislike motion/kinect arn't going to be able to avoid it, because all of MS's games will include it (barring Halo and, well Halo)

I agree with both John and Ryan that BrainAge wouldn't have succeeded. I don't think if pokemon was first published on an MS system it would take off in Japan.

I hope the frankenstick is only really needed for Monster Hunter. Don't care about this game. Would like to be able to keep my regular 3DS without the need to upgrade to play 2012+ games.

It's within your power to stop focusing on the uumhs and pay attention to his generally very sharp commentary. You know he's not going to change the way he talks for you, so you can change what you pay attention to or you can not listen.
True. But it's kinda like bomberman Bioshock Big daddy, I can't unhear it. :-( The talk is good so I'll try and endure.

I guess it is better then a long pause.

But surely I can't be the only one getting a bit annoyed?

Two things:

1) I was talking about games we choose to help bring over to Japan from the west.

2) Are you saying Petz Hamsterz Bunch is no good? Cause it's a 10/10 from the boxart alone, if you ask me:

Oh, please bring more western games to Japan.

Fire in the hole!! → 穴で火災だ!!

I have been keeping away from JP versions since I saw this fantastic translation.

Another excellent episode guys. I agree with Ryan about the Resi podcasts. No need to rush through every game.
This was the first episode I listened to from start to finish from these guys, and I must say it was embarrassing. Especially the first hour. Why even talk about Nintendo when they clearly have no clue or interest in the platforms. And if Hiroko (?) has nothing to say, then keep her out until her segment begins. Listening to some random snicker and mm-sounds is incredibly annoying when the person doesn’t utter a word for almost an hour and a half. No, this was bad.

What?

And Hiroko hate? You are a unique and wonderful snowflake.

It's entirely normal for people to talk this way. Why does it stand out to you so much?

Saying it in every other sentence is normal? :S Maybe it's because English isn't my mother language it’s more noticeable? Might be just me make a bigger deal then it is, but in no other podcast someone goes umm as often as Mark does. I believe he himself noted it once in one of the earlier episodes. It’s more of a wish for him to tone it down then it is a complaint as I truthfully want to hear what he has to say without feeling my insanity is at stake. :lol

3DS is a champagne-filled penis.

I'm not even half the way through the podcast and I'm already drained. As a big DQ and DS fan this has been a difficult week.

john Tv, Mark McD and Hiroko have no clue or interest in Nintendo?!?!

that's going to keep me laughing for a good day or two

I especially liked the talk about Aquaria, the reverse localizations they perform (well) for Western games, and what happens when that sort of thing goes Horribly Wrong.

Calling out stupid shit = no clue or interest in the platforms

This is now my #1 podcast. They know how to discuss things like console hardware intelligently and also throw a lot of humor and levity in while they're doing it.

Trying to get a good and intelligent console hardware discussion out of Weekend Confirmed is just hopeless at this point. Makes me sad.

Anyhow, keep up the good work gentlemen! I'm not really into Japanese gaming but I listen through all of it just to hear the great discussions.

I was seriously having flashbacks of 1upyours while listening to this episode. So good, and proper discussions.

Same here - the past few episodes have been fantastic due to the amount of news coming out. And that used to be my favorite section of 1UP Yours - having good, focused dialogue on the news as interpreted by people of different tastes who can make their statements clear and funny at the same time. Almost unsubscribed from the podcast over the summer because it was getting a little stale, but I'm really glad I didn't.

Are you supporting their insolent questioning of Iwata-sama? You will be judged when the time comes, and you will be found lacking...

Ryan really digging in deep with the 3DS and PS3-preference was much appreciated. that's the one problem with this podcast, they have a tendency to skim over interesting topics. Ryan was also spot on the money with the RE podcast thing, it needed to be longer with more time spent on everything. A bit of honest to goodness discourse that wasn't quickly discarded was good fun.

Considering they were talking about it for months, a better way to have done it might have been one 'mainline' title an episode, just at the end of each episode. That'd give them time to fire them up and play a little bit too.

I think that is definitely what was best about 1UP Yours. The news discussion was always an awesome feature of the show.

I especially like how John is a huge part of the show and has lots of great points. He's definitely getting into Shane territory for being what makes a show interesting.

First time catching this podcast. Im really enjoying it.
Nice to hear Payton on a podcast again. I loved his stuff during the pre-MGS4 days. Looking forward to his Camoflaj stuff.
