A bold new suggestion: custom tags?

i manged to wander into a tag thread pre neo-gaf, and ended up with the tag 'lucky' (it was a cat naming thread)
now am i going to bitch about not having that now? no.
am i going to mention it every time a tag thread comes up and beg for it back? no
i help moderate a somewhat major nin board (major enough to be linked off nin.com anyway), and i wish Invision had this feature!. instead we're stuck with people being able to change thier own tag when they hit 1000 posts.
what i wouldnt give to be able to change a few retarded posters tags who really deserve it.
anyhow, i say keep up the good work mods. i know it's not easy

I love my tag. Why? Because I earned it by saying the right thing at the right time and the right mod saw it. That's how it should work. Period.
Jesus, aren't we a bit high on ourselves these days....Mike? I mean, we're all anal-retentive about these lame-ass bannable phrases, why not just extend that same self-moderation to the sigs or tags? I'm sure there are plenty of stool pigeons on the forum that'll rat a violator out in a heartbeat. The custom tags I don't care about, but if we lack sigs b/c the mods have gotten lazy (yes, I said it...LAZY), then that's just plain weak. God knows, this post itself might be bannable, but I could care less. This thread raises a good point, but it'll be locked and ignored in due time. I like my tags, I've had interesting ones that were well-deserved, but I always thought sigs were dropped for bandwidth savings back when the old forum was about to give up the ghost. I had no idea it was for the reasons stated before. Sucked some of the fun out of the place. Sigs add personality. I miss 'em. PEACE.
Having a coordinated avatar/tag is overrated. I thought my Karl Malone combo was awesome, and it ended up on Matlock's "worst" list at the end of the year.
As a mod, I wish I could give out tags, since I occasionally see a situation which is BEGGING for one to be handed out...but no such luck.

I vote no for custom tags, but just in the short time I've been here (which is really longer than my sign up date, I assure you, but still not very long in the grand scheme of things), I've seen lots of missed opportunities for the mods to assign tags where they would have been appropriate, and heard lots of bitching from major contributers here asking for a tag or a change to thier tag. I like the policy, I just thing it could be applied a bit more liberally, and reward more of the worthy ppl around here.
That being said, I really don't know why I just posted this; its not like anyone gives a shit what a lowly Junior member thinks about an issue like this (which is another policy I have no problem with).

I dont know but not having a tag is ok with me. I have had a few iterations but they get tiring after awhile. Then you want it change and no mod wants to change cause they think its funny. I find nothing wrong with being a member.
Sigs are absolutely stupid. The vast majority of what people find to be profound or funny just...isn't.
As far as I'm concerned, the only valid use for them is giving your contact information in a business environment...and since most people prize their anonymity here, I doubt anyone is going to start adding real name and phone number to their posts.

Ok, I can't exactly speak for other mods(such as that hardass Mike), but when I said "good poster" I meant those who A) haven't been making asses of themselves and B) ask. I actually respond to requests in my PM inbox, and if you just wait around until the next tag thread comes chances are you're not going to get what you want, even if it's a positive tag.

only problems I have with tags is the admind/mods/whoever has control don't give enough of them. I don't care so much for the humor value, though some are funny, but if someone holds on to a tag long enough it serves the same beneficial purpose that an avatar does. its hard to remember people on this board simply by their usernames. Avatars help aleviate that by allowing you to remember visually rather than just by a name. So if I don't know who Hitokage is, I see the long time avatar/tag and remember, "oh yeah, the sneakers guy." It just helps put the person's post into perspective based on the kind of person you think they are. Tags help in that same regard. Possibly even moreso than avatars if you know the funny/retarded story behind their tag.

Sigs are meaningless wastes of bandwidth. Custom tags are a waste of time.
Mod-given tags rule, they seem much more personal. Even if half of us do resort to asking for a tag in tag request threads. I applaud whoever thinks up our tags, as they seem to have some thought put into them. Like my current and past ones.

Avatars and to a much lesser extent tags are used to quickly identify someone, but more importantly, they're off to the side of the screen. You don't have to look at a tag or an avatar when reading a series of posts.belgurdo said:

Yeah, I made the mistake of asking Hitokage to change my tag back after I had rightfully earned it from Drinky Crow (I think) in this thread. I should've kept it. Unfortunately, Bishop didn't get around to changing it back when I requested it today, or perhaps he didn't want to. No matter, life goes on.
If sigs are so meaningless and worthless, don't use one? I don't have one at Opa-Aged b/c I don't really care. But I have one at the various F1 forums I frequent. I liked them. Saw nothing wrong with GAF back when we had them. If a sig too long, rat them to the mod like people keep doing for bannable phrases, and let the policing take place that way. But whatever, it's not like there's gonna be a reasonable explanation for it, and it's not like this thread will accomplish anything. PEACE.

No sigs on my watch, ever. Reading the TNL forums reminded just how much I hate personality pimping.
A zany answer to no automatic sigs is to host a nice small image and copy and paste the uri at the end of each post. A bit of a hassle to always remember to copy and paste, but it's worth it to be the only guy with a sig. You'd never get banned for that, cuz it's like totally legal and stuff!
