I gotta agree with Mama Smurf on ASOS. That's not to say that I can't understand why somebody somewhere would enjoy it, but still.

This series isn't like wheel of time, is it?

The first five books in WoT is awesome, but then it goes into the crapper starting with book 6. So much talking and NOTHING going on. Jordan filling the book with a ton of filler crap to extend the series. Such a hot start but I'm so bored with it now. I stopped reading after book 7....I don't need 5 pages dedicated to Rand getting up in the morning, debating if he needs to take a morning crap now or after his meeting.
No, I gave up on WoT partway through Book 5, but I'm considering a third read of ASOIAF. First read them only about a year ago too.

I'm so fucking late to this party, but I just got through Game of Thrones (ok 20 pages left) and I'm hooked into this story. So much going on, such well defined characters. I can't believe some of the shit that's happened already and it's only book 1!

For those who may not have read it and want to, I put spoilers on this. I can't believe Eddard bit it! I thought he'd be a major character throughout the series and he gets his head lopped off! WTF? I mean I love it, but I was totally not expecting that to happen. I can't wait to see where this series goes!

Well I have a dilema now. I've bought book 2 this weekend at a used book store, so I'm all ready to dive in and read that too. The problem is, I know the series isn't even close to being finished yet, so do I tear through books 2,3 and then 4 when it comes out in November or should I space them out, fill my time reading other books, and then EVENTUALLY get to book 4 when say, book 5 is released and so on.

I hate waiting for something to finish. Like what if Martin dies before he finishes all the books? Fuck man, that would suck.

I'm about to finish A storm of Swords sometime in the next few days and I only started the series about a month ago. Waiting a month and a half for A Feast For The Crows is gonna suck. How did you people wait so long? Guess I'll find out after I finish it. :D

I agree with whoever said it's like Deadwood, but fantasy. That description is VERY accurate. In fact, you could say Deadwood is like ASOIAF, only about cowboys.

I really need to reread the books. I did a reread of the first one and have been slacking on the others. Great stuff, Tyrion is such a good character.

And Tyrion is our Al Swearingen.

lol i've been waiting since A Song of Swords was released. Like 5 years? Just read the books, they are too good not to.

This is what I'm saying. I prefer reading a series once I know all the books are released and I don't have the worry that it may never finish. I can't imagine having to wait 5 years between installments...fuck that's like waiting for a new Tool CD.

Right now I can afford to wait and space out the books since I don't get as much reading time as I used to since I got married. Many more things taking up my time right now, and I walk to work so I don't get to read in the mornings on the way to work anymore. With the baby coming in December I fear my reading time might be cut even further. We'll see.

Maybe I should rush through the current books before I get swamped with other stuff taking up my time?

Well Game has been re-released for $3.99, so I had to pick it up while we were wandering around the bookstore this weekend, starting to go through it now... it's starting slow and books like that bother me... but hell Jordan's shit always starts slow too so I can't use that as an excuse.... I just finished the first Runelords book... interesting read...

Just read them. Enjoy the ride and bite the bullet when it's time to wait. I've not been waiting as long as the others (only a year or two) for Feast for Crows, but I'm already tempted to read the books again in preparation for it's release.

Hated Martin's books. But I just got into the Malazan novels by Erikson... finished book 2 only a week or two ago. AMAZING stuff.

Finished a Storm of Swords on Monday.

I started The Hedge Night last night and just finished it. Good stuff too bad it wasnt about 10 times longer.

Now I'm reading an exceprt from A Feast For Crows.

Also found a cool site with artwork for most of the characters....

He's not going to take as long to write the next book, because he's already written most of it (half the POVs from Book 4 move to Book 5 because it was too big to publish). Hopefully AFFC was just one stumbling block for him anyway; he actually tried to skip seven years of the timeline and it wasn't working, so he started again. By contrast A Storm of Swords, the biggest book, only took him a year and a half. Over all this time sorting out his story he should be right on track.

I just started A Storm of Swords the other day. I hope he can keep the quality up, unlike Jordon and that POS Wheel of Time series.

The quality of the Jordan series was never this high at any point.

The Dark Tower series taught me that this is a wise course of action. (Especially for me, since I have to read all the earlier volumes in a series over again before a new volume comes out, in order to refresh my memory.)

Martin's publisher seems to be good about keeping the books in print in hardcover, so I'll swipe them all up when the final volume comes out (in 2012, probably) and read them then. They'll be just as entertaining.

Don't worry about having to wait 5 years between books again. There were serious problems getting A Feast For Crows ready. Hell it didn't even exist for a considerable amount of time, A Dance With Dragons was supposed to be the fourth book, skipping a large number of years forward in the story, parts of which would be revealed in flashbacks and characters' thoughts and dreams etc.

That just wasn't working though, so AFFC had to be created, covering that timespan. That in itself created large problems as it meant the book's flow and structure was incredibly complex, covering far more time than any other in the series. The sheer amount of information alone that had to be put in there was a bitch to the publishers, ASOS itself had been hard enough to publish and AFFC was past that amount with hundreds of pages still left to write. The fact that he's splitting the book in two and each version is STILL going to be around the size of AGOT shows just how much work has had to go into this.

Now these scenarios just aren't going to come up with another book in the series. Others might, but if we have to wait more than 3 years between any of the other books, I'd be very surprised. And A Dance With Dragons should come relatively quick as it's half finished already.

I quite like the wait between books myself, though it would indeed be awful if it somehow couldn't be finished. That's my only worry though, I love the anticipation of it and the discussion of what might happen next, not to mention the excitement when the next book is actually out there.

Just one month left!

Is anyone here going to buy the British version of AFFC that comes out three weeks earlier? I would, but I've heard rumors that the British versions of the books are crappier in terms of binding/design. Any truth to that?

Well the design ain't great if you care about that sort of thing, but I haven't personally had any problems with the binding.

There's a very active ASOIAF message board if anyone doesn't know about it:

http://pub26.ezboard.com/basoiaf

Shows the quality of the series when there hasn't been a book for 5 years but people still have such enthusiasm.

And GRRM has confirmed that there's gonna be another
(non-Dany)
lesbian scene in AFFC! Sold!
