A History of Violence

It's Cronenberg so it's guaranteed quality. Spider was fantastic and I can't wait to see how his style evolves from that. Ed Harris just screams bad ass in the trailer.

Haha, I just saw this trailer like two days ago. Looks to be a great movie. Viggo Mortensen for the win...

It comes out tomorrow. Anyone seen it early?

I'm probably going with my sister. She BARELY tolerated Kill Bill and Sin City. If it's too bad I might just see it alone.

Only in something like 10 theaters (New York and LA, maybe a few other cities). Wide release is a week later.

EDIT: It actually seems to be opening in a lot of bigger cities tomorrow, but only on 1 or 2 screens apiece.

The reviews are overall looking very good -- I can't wait to see this. (It even looks like this'll be getting some serious Oscar buzz, though I doubt it'll get significant nominations.) First Cronenberg movie I get to see in a theater...

I'm dying to see this. One more week!

Lots of good movies on the way. In a two week period (9/30-10/7) we get MirrorMask, A History of Violence, Oliver Twist, Good Night and Good Luck, and Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were Rabbit.

is it just me or is viggo STILL not gettin' any credit for his acting ability? I mean... 2 movies since LOTR?

I think it's more Viggo's choice...he seems to be fine with a light schedule.

This movie got rave reviews at the Toronto Film Festival, where it was one of the gala presentations. Movie just looks and sounds bad ass, so I defintely plan to see it sometime next week.

You're jumping to conclusions. Who says that isn't his choice?

And who the hell is saying Hidalgo was good? :P

Hidalgo was a pretty shit way to follow up LotR. Almost a Brendan Frasier level career move. :lol

This one does look hot and it should get my money. Though scheduling for this could be a problem. =_=;

Viggo on Charlie Rose
Guess this is as good a place as any to post this. Well stated and informed opinion regardless of if you agree with him or not.

Back on topic, this movie actually looks pretty good. Corpse Bride, Serenity and this in the next little while! :D

Wow. Just got back from seeing it at The Grove in LA. Fucking great movie. Pure Cronenberg from start to finish. Without revealing too much, I can happily say that the old-school Cronenberg gore is prevelant throughout the movie along with the precise camera movement of the modern, "mature" Cronenberg. I can't wait to see it again.

Oh, and to top things off ... James Woods was in the same fucking theater as I was. Long live the new flesh.

Has anyone here seen the movie and read the comic? Could we get a comparison. I love the comic, and I love Cronenberg. I'm dying to see this.

Hmmm, We Love Cronenberg would be a great video game. You could roll around a giant decapitated skull and roll up body parts and VHS tapes.

Hahahah, I love you White Man. We <3 Cronenberg would be the best game ever.

P.S. - I haven't read the graphic novel but ordered it from Amazon tonight.

Cronenberg's said in pretty much every interview that it's not very faithful to the comic.

I've heard that, but I like Cronenberg, so I am hoping his deviances from the book are imrovements. The trailer sure as heck seems faithful to the book.

i loved the movie. everyone besides my gf that i saw it with hated it. cronenberg style isn't for everyone i guess.

Never really heard of Cronenberg but I'm guessing he does alot of fucked up shit.

Did he do a movie about a machine that augments the brain? People start seeing creatures they normally they can't see and vice versa. There were floating jellyfish, and some guy got eaten by a cloud of microscopic animals.

I was REALLY young when I saw it.

synopsis of the movie please?

Looks very interesting, other than seeing Serenity 2 or 3 times this weekend (seriously) seeing History of Violence is the only other thing on my weekend entertainment calender.

Is it violent as in Goodfellas/Casino/Kill Bill/Pulp Fiction violent? Please say yes! :D

when i first saw the trailer in theaters, i was in the middle of telling everyone how shitty this movie looks, when i saw it flash cronenberg's name. i got all excited and revoked my previous comment, going on and on about how much i love cronenberg. good times.

i'm going to catch it this weekend, most definitely.

Sweet.

I've been to the theater once since January, and that was fucking Guess Who.

Def. seeing it this weekend.

Well, it's certainly violent and gory, but Cronenberg is more interested in making you dissect your own reaction to the violence than simply allowing you to get off on it.

holy shit. just got back. one of the best films of the year... it was so visceral, it was just awesome.

a lot of people were saying they didn't like it as they were leaving. I'm guessing its because those people have no taste in films (as in, one actually said "I KNEW we should have seen Lord of War!"), but if you have a decent taste in film, there's no way you can not love this movie.

saw this movie right before seeing Serenity...is it really based off a graphic novel? might explain the last hour or so of the film

I liked it a lot...good flick...nice pubic hair on the wife...oh and a carpet munching scene? the movie had blood too...some people where grossed out

so let's see:

cunt eatery
+1
wife pubes
+1
blood
+1
gore
+1
viggo ass
-2
still ends up in the positives

yeah...I'd say it's a good film

-a billion for almost seeing the White Schlong of Gondor

Can't wait to see this when it makes it back into town next weekend (damn you, Tallahassee). Going to see Grizzly Man instead this weekend.

Great movie. Ed harris and William Hurt are awesome in this. The movie seemed really short too. I know its only like 95 minutes but it flew by quickly even for that.

Holy shit. After watching it, I immediately went out and bought 3 Cronenberg films I didn't own.

It was somehow better than I was hoping. Strong movie of the year contender.

William Hurt rocked.

"How do you fuck that up????"
:lol

I'm glad to see so many positive reactions from the GAF crowd. I plan on seeing it again on Sunday. Dammit Amazon, where is the graphic novel I ordered?
