A look at every game by Treasure [Game Sack]

No one shall be brought before our LORD David Bowie without the true and secret knowledge of the Photoshop. For in that time, so shall He appear.
This video by Game Sack was just uploaded, and it's absolutely worth a watch. Treasure is undoubtedly one of the greatest developers of all time. Give the vid a watch if you're interested.

I Never liked the way they went out, they deserved better.

Their games for the most part deserved to sell much better. Their work on Sega Saturn, at least to me was similar to Rare. Just pure brillaince, creativity and coding skills or Konami on NES. Their GBA work was pretty solid too, Astroboy very underated. Ikaruga, Radiant Silvergun and Gradius were absolute perfection. Best in class developer. I haven't touched on their Genesis games. They don't make them like this anymore.

Radiant Silvergun is one of the greatest games of all time. It's a huge shame that only came out in Japan during the dying days of an unsuccessful console and was in a genre that had lost almost all popularity at the time.

The soundtrack, graphics, weapons and boss design are all amazing and I think it's unsurpassed in terms of shoot 'em ups.

You can guess which one of their games I like the best. Ikaruga is a perfect game. The depths of its simplicity are unmatched.

Radiant Silvergun is a bit too technical to reach the same highs for me. A single playthrough of the game is simply too long for its own good. But it is spectacular, incredible at times.

I was never crazy for Gunstar Heroes. Way too hectic, even if the tech savvy and the creativity on display are off the charts.

I really have to try Mischief Makers some day, and to dive deeper into the Sin and Punishment duology.

Got curious and checked the wiki page for Treasure. They are still around with the last game released in 2014 with a "highly requested" game in the works which they mentioned in 2022. Twitter account still tweets a couple of times a year.
No indication of them doing contract work, probably surviving on the occasional sales of Ikaruga and other older games.

Wonder what they be cookin'? New Ikaruga or Gunstar Heroes sounds likely.

I adore the original Sin & Punishment. Its one of my favorite games of all time and I would have never expected it when I played it on Virtual Console.

Its on rails like starfox which allows for some cool setups but its that in tandem with the restrictive jumps, dodge and reflect system along with a challenging difficulty forcing you to master them that really takes it to the next level. Also the music is great.

Gunstar Heroes was one of the games back in the day Megadrive owners used to bitchslap arrogant snes owners. An interview Treasure done with GameFan where they said they wouldn't port it to the snes as its CPU wasn't fast enough only cemented their status amongst Sega fans.

Every now and then I play the Guardian Heroes port for xbla (on Xbox One) and it's amazing how this game isn't as appreciated and remembered by beat'em'ups buffs, since everebody's talking now about this niche ressurgence (SR4, TMNT: SR, etc) or even to long time Treasure fans. Sure, it has some quirks like those long texts or frequent pauses during gameplay – I find that very annoying and it prevents me from playing more, to be honest – and I think it would be an excellent idea to remake the game modernized in the ui aspects, without those annoyances.

It's absolutely way ahead of his time and has great gameplay innovations, such difficulties spikes like world tendencies on Demon's Souls, combo driven combat and multiple paths and endings.

For me, Guardian Heroes is the quintessencial game from Treasure, alongside Radiant Silvergun. It's such a pity that the formula never were more explored.

Btw, great post and video OP Dacvak Dacvak !

Can't watch right now but does it tell that they use to work for Konami but Konami wouldn't let them do things the way they thought it should be done so they formed treasure.

But then Konami started to copy them so not only did treasure make good games they influenced Konami to make better games as well.

My favorite game dev, period.
To me - their games are as good as the medium has ever achieved.
Sin & Punishment 1 and Radiant Silvergun are a toss up for my #1 favorite videogame ever.
Their games take practice and skill - and you can sense you are getting better with more playtime.

Very curious to see what their 'final' game will be.

Contra 3 didn't involve Treasure?

Pretty sure that was all Konami. Tho Treasure themselves are formed from ex-Konami staff which'd explain why games like Gunstar Heroes captured that Contra energy so perfectly.

I really do need to delve deeper into Treasure's catalogue, tho I've played Gunstar Heroes & Mischief Makers, plus the McDonald's game, Ikaruga and a bit of Dynamite Headdy. Alien Soldier looks so cool, but also seems kind of daunting to jump into at times. Should probably treat it more like a fighting game since the controls are kind of similar, and it is mainly a boss rush.

I'm halfway through the video and I just had to stop because I can't contain my WHAT THE FUCK after seeing Stretch Panic :messenger_tears_of_joy:
Today's gaming may be fine, but the creativity and the unfiltered madness we had 25 years ago were light years ahead of today's highly sanitized gaming landscape. Not saying we need pinching and stretching giant balloony tits in games, but there's a principle underneath the actual realization that needs more love.

One thing that's clear as soon as the video enters the PS2 era is that the grey-brown aesthetics that would be the trademark of Gen 7 were already there on the PS2, and in Japanese games too. Silpheed looks like a higher-res spiritual sequel to Radiant Silvergun, but without all the colors. Shooters went from one of the most colorful gaming genres to the coldest in one swift generational leap (see also R-Type Final and Gradius V).

Still have a bunch of their games to playthough but damn those I've played sure are top-tier stuff.

Don't skip on Sin & Punishment 2. It's not as talked as much as the first game but in my opinion it's even better, specially playing with the wiimote.

In a sane world, Nintendo would acquire Treasure, their talent, and their catalogue, remaster their classics, and pump in lots of budget to create new games.

As it is, I'm going to keep replaying their stuff until the end of time. I'm hankering for another playthrough of Sin and Punishment: Star Successor and I've never actually tried Silhouette Mirage, but I'm excited to. I also bought, but never played, the delisted Bangai-O HD: Missile Fury. It'll be a pain to set up (I'll have to connect my 360 since it's not BC) but I have no doubt it'll be worth it.

Honestly Ive heard more people praise the sequel compared to the original. Its good I just think the Jetpack weakens alot of the game design. Its alot easier overall too. I found it a fun but a way less memorable experiance.

I just played through it about a month ago and it holds up tremendously. Absolutely incredible game, and I had a tough time near the end, and I was even just playing on Normal. If you bump it up to hard, it's a proper challenge. Some of those boss fights are just incredible.

Gunstar Heroes was peak Mega Drive/Genesis
Easily my favorite game on the Genesis. I have no idea how my non-gaming parents managed to pick that game to buy for me for my birthday when I was 7 or 8, but I'm so happy they did.

My favorite game developer.

No one ever surpassed them when it comes to pure action fun, their games have phenomenal feedback, basic interactions feel amazing and they're surprisingly deep games for being so arcade-like.

Guardian Heroes is probably in my top 3 favorite games of all time but Sin and Punishment 2, Alien Soldier, Ikaruga and the GBA Astro Boy game aren't that far on the list.

I asked for Mortal Kombat on Genesis for Christmas. My mom didn't want me to play something so violent, so she told me she asked the game store dude what would be good instead, and he recommended Gunstar Heroes, so that's what I got.

Game store guy knew his shit, and my parents rock.

I looked them up after watching the video. Sounds like they're down to about 10 employees and as of about 3 years ago are supposedly working on a highly requested game.

They did push out an update to fix issues with Ikaruga on Steam about a month back.
