I can totally understand why Ailynn feels this way. It is almost a hopeless "battle" and the anti trans or trans threads can get really ugly in my experience. I also may be a bit direct but I try never to generalize a whole group of people or attack a person in general but rather their view or opinion. I think in the end I am sharing a lot of views with her. I also see being Trans as a mental illness but not in a bad way but rather in a way that these people need and should get all the help they need. Including surgery, counseling etc.

Even with such an topic people need to be more respectful to each other while also having different views on different topics and issues. Never make i personal people or you will drive away the people you want to have an actual discussion with.

And Ailynn I really love your thoughtful posts and so much positive energy as well as sharing very private events in your life to make people understand a bit better. You never came over as someone who wants to educate people from a higher position but you rather as a friend who shares a different viewpoint and experience. One thing is certain if you decide to leave this section please remember that you will be honestly missed here. Not only by me but many other people.

I'm fairly new here and I know what those sections are like on forums in general.
That thread was a bit of a dumpster fire but at the end of the day people were saying what they felt.
You may not like their opinion but it is real life and this is what people in all circles of life are saying in real life.

The point is, politics are literally about heated debates and I can understand that if it's a topic that hits home hard for you it can be stressful.

If you're finding it stressful then it's time to step away for a while just like I would say if you're stressed doing any task.

However it being called the "politics" section should be warning enough that the conversation is gonna be intense and insulting for you.

I feel it was not good form of me to give a mocking comment in the report-button thread, after having been told by you in a previous encounter that you misunderstood a milder joking comment of mine as an attack. I should have been more careful in observing your wish for banter. It is unfortunate that I have given you reason to feel incomfortable because it is pretty important to me to treat people in a way they feel respected. The other issue with my posting was, that it was more or less a drive-by. I saw the thread, your op, thought "let's tease him a bit about his nicknames where they fit in an ironic way" and did not make the effort to read through the thread to gather the tone and your expressed feelings up to that point. Please be aware that I did not intend to ridicule you.

No need to apologize Yoshi. Unbeknownst to you i have interpreted amany of your posts aswell as something more negative than it apparently is. As always, texts don't full envocate what a person thinks and feels and emoji's can be seen as cheap and yet still not showcasing what you mean.

On that note, i appreciate that you wrote this post, if only to clear it up. I think what you describe here is something many users, myself included, tend to do at any given moment, some more than the others. In that sense i think it is big of you to write this publically, knowing full well how GAF can be at times. So, this is appreciated.

While I'm not exactly hiding my identity here, I'm not advertising it either. So you'll have to excuse me for being a little vague. But basically, I upset some people with a lot of influence and not a lot of responsibility in wielding that influence. They misinterpreted something I said as a threat. I was maybe posturing a little, and that's on me, but it was never intended to be a threat, much less one in the manner which they took it.

I have to cut this short as to not make this novelle length again (Although it very much might be at this point) but i empathize with your situation (Whether you want that or not, i cannot say. I am just saying). Misinterpretation in communication is a very nasty flaw in our daily habits as humans. Not because of the misinterpretation itself, but because we act upon it instead of making sure that what was relayed was said in the proper intent. As such, i am sorry that in your situation, the people misinterpreting you acted upon it and as such created something you never wished for in the first place.

If anyone can't handle Neogaf in it's current form might I suggest stepping away from the internet all together? Neogaf as it stands right now is like an oasis of tolerance. I'm as shocked as anyone by that statement. Tolerance means putting up with people you disagree with in a peaceful manner. We are doing that for the most part.

To be fair, i have seen and been in places, both online and offline that far more fit the nature of an oasis of tolerance than what you are describing here. Redneckerz I don't really know what went down here because I never come to this section of the forum but yeah that's definitely a good book. The Wind-up Bird Chronicle is very similar and I'd like to suggest it to you if you haven't read it already. I know @Noboru Wataya agrees.

I am near finishing the novel and i can safely say its really a captivating tale, half fictional, but definitely occuring the real world. I like how Murakami makes every day things sound extraordinary, even though the main protagonist, Tsukuru, is someone you could translate in real life as akin to having someone with autistic tendencies. I don't want to spoil too much for those who want to read this, But Tsukuru is definitely a Japanese Joe Sixpack, yet, with his own unique set of thoughts, impressions and experiences.

Before Colorless Tsukuru, i wanted to read his more known novel Kafka on the Shore, but since i am not a roman fan nor had read Murakami before, i decided on settling with Tsukuru. Now that i have read Colorless, i am more inclined to read these books, or at the very least, read Pewdiepie's book list, of which there is a Goodreads link here. Regardless of what you think of Pewds, the books he reads are well worth a check out.

Antoon, as interesting as it is seeing a drawn summary of the Ailynn thread, id like to stress that this thread is not about her. Nor is it about the politics section completely. Its in general.

Additionally, i have to say that although i find the delivery interesting, as in, its unusual to comment this way, the content featured is rather in poor taste and a real poor showing towards someone who has never gone at the lengths of mockery as you did here right now.

Sadly, a post like this adds to my (limited) impression that i have of you, and although i am rather certain that you do not care about my impression of you, i wish that the effort you threw into making this was used for something more positive and less embezzeling on Ailynn's behavior and situation. Because outside of the content, you definitely have a talent for drawing up dramatic scenery.

Little side post, but there is Norwegian Wood in my library aswell. I am not sure if it was Kafka or Norwegian Wood that were far larger in volume than Colorless Tsukuru, but ill go with Kafka first then. I have added your recommendation on my list however, so i will inevitably check it out. Thank you for the recommendation.

I’m not sure I’d describe the politics sub as “relaxed” and “laidback.”

Not saying it should be, and not saying it’s a bad place, but I think the way describe it is a little inaccurate. It gets pretty sharp in there. Again, that’s not a bad thing, it’s real life issues that people are passionate about, and yeah there are jokes and fun threads, and I get to shitpost about AOC for some giggles here and there, but like InterMusketeer said, the site is a bowl of candy and the politics sub is a bittersweet candy, to me, that I try to enjoy carefully/proportionally. My traffic there has diminished quite a bit and that’s probably best for everyone as I rarely offer anything useful or insightful.

Also, I imagine the experience varies dramatically based on whether you are on the popular or unpopular side of any given political talking point, which is a fluid scenario that varies thread by thread and also depends on your level of passion per any given point as well.

I think what she got tired of is that you dance around the points she makes (e.g. in that topic your first reply is that she is somehow claiming that there is no difference between male and female brains when her statement and position is the opposite), especially the ones citing neurological studies of trans vs cis individuals, and just rehash the same talking points constantly. At least with Voost we got some new idiocy from AOC every topic. You just post in the wind. It's not a discussion if one party is completely unwilling to entertain the other position or be open to change.

My general take on all of this is that we need to make sure we let everyone get their opinion across, as long as it doesn't become abusive and counterintuitive to discussion or debate. It'd be too easy to gather people around a cause to oust others and such would lead to groupings vying for power.
It should also be noted that this is the internet. There's no "winning", so one should also understand the value in walking away or just avoiding a topic if it's detrimental to your mental health or other aspects of your life. The politics threads will always be more controversial and for some feel quite intimate, so walking away from the Politics section should be seen as a wise thing to do if it's digging in on you. I've reduced my time on political subjects, because it eats into too much of my work in real life (I've also stepped away from Discord a bit for this reason, as I've got a deadline).

I'd also say that while Ailynn is a valued member of the community, there is no need to infantilize her. She's a grown woman that can take care of herself. Transpeople will always meet more opposition than others to live as they want, so their strength shouldn't be underestimated. To me, it seems Antoon is deeply invested in the trans issue, which unfortunately leads to repeatedly posting threads about transpeople. Like I've previously suggested, it'd be better to keep a single "controversial"/"heavy topic" thread for discussion of transgender people. That'd make it a single topic to get back too and not feel like you have to run and answer all the threads popping up. It also allows you to not feel a fear of missing out.
For all the negative about Ailynn and Antoon situation, they had in my opinion a really interesting conversation in one of their threads, even if they disagree on the issues.

I do view us all as a community, although I wouldn't be too idealistic to call us "friends", but overall we're brought together by our love of a hobby: games. So I like the idea of us having a healthy community, where we understand that we might disagree, sometimes lash out and hopefully apologize, sometimes we make a joke that's in good fun, but someone doesn't understand that motivation and takes it as malice. But that we all understand that we aren't here for what separates us apart, but for what unites us. That's why I hope that we don't fall into the traps of accusing each other all the time or always questioning motives. Because that's not fruitful. We also shouldn't be afraid to call out someone acting shitty, but we also shouldn't be antagonistic about it. It's easy for a majority to trample a minority after all, history shows us that much.

A big life tip to every poster would be one you're taught when giving feedback: give 2 positive remarks and 1 negative/critical remark. Even if different weight is given, acknowledging when others do good gets the things you want to convey that are negative/critical go much easier through. It also leads less to a sense of hopelessness, anxiety, depression and antagonism. If all are treated as adversaries, then in the end things will end up bipolarized. If you push too much into the other person they will go into fight or flight. So a sense of civility should be encouraged, but also one recognizing the difference between malice and a joke. Taking offense is easy, trying to understand people is hard.
I'd also say the metacommentary about the community also kind of leads to a very antagonistic view or conflicts as well. And concerns can often lead to what would be considered concern trolling or just causing more drama and antagonism. At this point I'm unsure what my point is, but the moderation here is great, but a lot of tensions lay between different parts of the community. The metacommentary on the site itself isn't really helpful if it's always brought up as a concern. Some problems we have also is about general behavior, like doubting intentions of other posters, people making topics about serious issues with terrible titles or just focusing on single posting single videos or general labeling.
All in all, I'm hopeful and always view us as an interesting group of misfits. We all argue and disagree, but in the end I feel like there's something else pulling us together. That kind of group is always more interesting, even if it also can have some hard times that more homogenous groups don't.
