Can you be a fan of two teams, even though they play in the same conference and you live in one of the cities the teams play in?

For example I live in Cincinnati, but I am a fan of both the Browns and the Bengals. (I can't account for taste..I know)

Is it wrong to like two teams? Just wondering....

Eeeh....I don't know. Browns and Bengals are both bad enough so that there's no real rivalry anymore, but the history of the teams is pretty heated. I mean, you can do whatever you want, but it's pretty weird.

It can't be worse than this though. Late 04, I was at work and overheard a girl say "Well, yeah, I'm a fan of the Steelers and the Browns both."

...

No the fuck you aren't, you lying whore.

That's like hearing "Yeah, I really like the Yankees and the Red Sox" or "You know, I root for both the Cowboys and the Redskins"

My best friend is a fan of the Browns and the Steelers, though he favors the Steelers when both teams play. Another friend of mine is a big fan of the Bengals and the Colts. I guess I don't see anything wrong with it.....

growing up in Seattle I was forced to like other teams....

If I suggested to someone that I liked both the Raiders and the 49ers, I'd be lucky to only get an incredulous expression. It depends on how passionate the fans are, though...

I suppose it's possible, but a diehard fan couldn't do it, imho. For instance, I'm a Cowboys fan (yeah, I know, let me have it! :) ) and it is nearly impossible for me to root for the Eagles or Giants. And there is no way in hell I would have cheer for the Redskins. Not in this or any other life time. Casual fans can probably get away with it, but ask a Raider fan if he can cheer for the Raiders and the Chargers, let alone the Chiefs or Broncos.

Same conference? Eh, not likely.

Different conferences? Well I do it, and I get shit for it all the time. :p

Astros (National League) and Red Sox (American League) in baseball
Texans (AFC) and Buccaneers (NFC)

I attribute it to the fact that I lived in both cities... you eventually will like the other team if that's all there is to watch.

BTW, I just got my Browns license plates today. I'll have to have my friend drive me to the Bengals games...

False. He's not a fan of either.

Yeah, believe it or not he is. He grew up in Pittsburgh, so his heart is with the Steelers, but he'll root for the Browns when they are not playing them. He lives in Cleveland, if that helps....

I like both the Vikings and Packers.

My favorite team is the Steelers, though.

Liking the Steelers and Browns at the same time is impossible. You're not a real fan if you like both.

You're not the most self aware person on the planet, are you?

I once dumped a girl because she told me she was a casual fan of the Cowboys right before football season.

seriously.

You can be a fan of two teams as long as they don't directly compete (i.e. you can like both the Redskins and the Raiders), but not two teams who do compete (like the Skins and the Eagles), and especially not two teams that have a history of rivalry (like skins / Giants or Skins / Cowboys).

I guess I can understand it a bit better now.... I guess I am just not that big of a football fan to care about rooting for one team or the other.

I'm a big hockey fan. My team is the Leafs, and I couldn't root for anyone else in their division. I couldn't even begin to think about liking Boston or shitty Philly, so I suppose I see everyone's point.

Yeah, I don't know how anyone could like two teams within the NFC East since almost franchise has a history of rivalry (some run deep, like 'Skins/Cowboys) and none of 'em like each other.

Yes. It is wrong to be a fan of both the Browns and the Bengals.

But it's not a sin to root for two teams. I generally support the entire NFC Norse, but then Detroit overtop of them all. I don't think it really matters who you cheer for, just as long as you cheer.

That is different.

Your two favorite teams cannot be the Steelers and Browns.

My favorite team is the Steelers. I just happen to like the Vikes and Pack, but I don't like them equally, nor are they both my favorite team.

That's just dumb...I'd personally get a kick out of dating a girl that liked the Cowboys, Lakers or Manchester United, simply because the arguments would be based on sports instead of other silly things.

I do agree that rooting for two teams that are deep-seeded rivals doesn't make much sense. That said, I have rooted for the Eagles to win the Superbowl the last couple years, just so they can join the rest of the group in having a Lombardi in their trophy case, as well as bringing glory back to the most bad ass division in football. Plus I hate the Patriots far more then the Eagles.

Right now I've started rooting for the Nets, simply because of Vince Carter being there. I imagine they'll be the most hated team in this neck of the woods, but I couldn't give a rat's ass. Most of the fans in this town are dumb fucks anyway.

Well I'm both a White Sox and Cubs fan. Oh how I absolutely root for those lovable losing North Siders!

Yes, you can be but it's to be avoided. And only for a while.

That fate was thrust on me because I grew up in two cities whose teams played in the same division. Eventually you have to relegate one team to "I wish them no specific failures as a team but I can no longer cheer for them unless it has no impact on my true team" status.

Even growing up though, I'd always like one team or the other a bit more.

Good. Terrel Owens received permanent amnesty in my eyes from all future actions for spiking the ball twice on the Dallas star at midfield. I hate the Cowboy, and I hate the people that like them.

:lol That was one of the coolest moments in the history of sports.

You can like both teams, and you can be a "fan" of both teams, but you're not really a true fan in my books. You're a konex class fan.

Well it doesn't make you a "team fanatic" if you like more than one team. Personally, I like a lot of teams for what they are, and I'm fans of certain players. Maybe you can have a special catagory for "sport fans", such as "Hockey fans" etc. Ie. I loved Cujo, even before he got to play for Detroit. I'm a fan of Belfour...yet I despise the Leafs.
