A simple trick developers should use to make 3D games look good on DS

And it's built right in the hardware. It's called cel-shading. It can make shitty 3D power turn into something decent. IGN commented how good Tony Hawk looked on DS saying it looked as if it was cel-shaded. Why don't more developers take advantage of this, instead of releasing crappy looking 1997 3D?

Sonic Rush also uses cel-shading on the Sonic polymodel (to try to match it with the sprites about), and so far, the effect on him doesn't look too hot. Maybe they'll improve that, though.

Though I guess Sonic's never had much luck with cel-shading, anyway. I have a few early shots of Sonic Shuffle before it was cel-shaded, and it looks much better than what we ended up with. (No one really needs to say, "PLAYS BETTER TOO LOL," thank you...)

Cel-shading built in the hardware?

I don't know much about game development / hardware, but isn't cel-shading just an art style you can create with the right graphics engine?

An EXTERNAL processor? so, Nintendo makes an expansion pak for the DS for use in the GBA slot, and ups the graphics during the game maybe?
No... Would be a chip on that card. Like Superfx.

Yeah, hence my last post.
Perhaps they could use it for things they should have included in the hardware. :lol

Oh, so a chip inside the GBA cart, or on the DS games? Superfx was on the games themselves right? Also couldn't they make RAM carts to put in the GBA slot to be used in games? I think that would help a lot if it could be done.

Cel-shading is about lighting objects. The amount of lighting/shadowing to apply to a surface depends upon the angle between the surface and the direction of the light source. What this means is that to calculate it, you need to do it on a per poly basis, since each polygon will be at a slightly different angle to the light. So say you had a 5000 poly character, then at 60 fps, that is 300,000 calculations per second. So although the calculation isn't too complex, the problem is you have to apply that calculation many times, hence putting it into hardware speeds it up big time.

On my other PC (that's having problems right now), but I'll see if I can dig them out in a week or so. It's just one or two shots, taken under unideal conditions, but it's quite obvious that the cel-shading effect isn't being applied.

I watched the video for like 10 times, but I couldn't find the beautiful
Me neither; in fact, it looks kinda shitty. I think most of the games in the 'Year of the DS' thread look better. Of course, that's just my opinion; I could be wrong.

That boss segment looks really good. Colour me surprised, a non-shitty effort from Sonic Team. Between this and PSU, it's tempting to think that they've turned a corner.

A 2D Sonic game, that's what most people here were asking for wasn't it? What about the Sonic PSP? Is that gonna be 2D?
