I'd call myself pretty average, I was able to play decently by myself within 2-3 years, and in front of people in a performance setting in 4-5 years.
Things to learn (in the rough order I learned them):
1. Strumming
2. Open chords (as opposed to bar chords)
3. Strumming
4. Bar chords
5. Strumming
6. scales/picking (this is more or less where I am now)
.. did I mention strumming?
You're going to need to break in your hands, both in terms of callouses on your chord hand and in terms of teaching your fingers how to stretch. There's chords that my fingers simply couldn't form when I first started playing, that now are second nature. Heck, I had problems playing a standard G chord (pinky on 1st string 2nd fret, ring on 6th string 2nd fret, middle on 5th string 1st fret).
Lastly, practicing a small amount daily is more effective than practicing a large amount on an irregular basis.
