About to buy a PS4

Woah, really? Out of curiosity, what was the last system you owned?

I mean there's nothing wrong with that, but it's interesting to hear that someone hasn't had any experience with "HD" gaming these days.

If you like Souls/Bloodborne, maybe also consider Nioh? It's also got strong Onimusha and Ninja Gaiden vibes if you care for those franchises.

For indies, some to consider: Transistor, The Witness, Rocket League.

Anyway, I think you'll really love the PS4! And you picked the best time to jump in. 2017 is looking like the PS4's best year ever. Tons of variety for just about anyone.

I've owned only Nintendo consoles, so the last one I had was the Wii, but its disc drive broke for the third time while I was in the middle of my second play through of Xenoblade Chronicles. I have played on the Xbox 360 only a few times and lesser so on the PS3 that my brother-in-law had until he sold them both. My brother recently bought an Xbox One which I got to play for less than two hours. I didn't care for the games he had which were Mortal Kombat X, Tomb Raider sequel and Gears of War 3.

Yeah, I'll definitely look into Ni-oh (but never played Ninja Gaiden or Onimusha before) and some of those indie games too.

I decided to get the PS4 Slim Uncharted bundle off of Amazon for $229, but the process is taking to long to get a confirmation after I used my gift cards to use them as Amazon gift card balance. The balance still says zero, so if the confirmation is going to take another hour or two, then I'm just going to go to best buy and pick up the PS4 for $250 with the $50 gift card.

Whelp. Congrats on the new Slim Hiltz. Enjoy the last 3 years worth of stellar games.

Welcome to the PlayStation family, your going to have a blast.

What world do you live in? You have to go out your way to get a 4K TV. And they're not cheap if you want the full HDR experience.

?.... 4k and HDR is not that expensive, you seem way out of touch. I see frys running Sony 55" 4k with HDR for 698$. I guess if youre only buying 300$ TVs that might be expensive.

In fact I see 50" sony 4k HDR TVs for 550$ today, if you want subpar brands they can be had for 400$...

Sure you can go spend 2000-5000$ if you want. But you can buy one of the better 55" hdr tvs for 999$ on sale (un55ks8000).

And back on topic. OP you should check target out if youve decided on a pro. You can definately save 10% using one of the cartwheel or electronics deals (pick up in store for example right now saves 10%). I ended up getting one for 324$ after coupons a couple weeks ago.

I've decided to get my first current-gen console, a PS4 slim. As someone who is not used to the PlayStation brand let alone HD gaming, is there anything Sony fans think I should know about it like choosing a new, bigger hard drive? Anyone know of any good buy 2 get one free game deals going on? I think the best offer is Best Buy's PS4 Uncharted 4 bundle with $50 gift card.

Get PlayStation Plus, download the "free" games every month, and there will be some real gems in there. Also, when they run sales on PlayStation Store (they're actually running two right now - Holiday Week 3 and a Flash sale) you can get a lot of great games for quite cheap (ex: 70% off).

Oh, and don't sleep on the free Demos, Betas, and Free to Play sections. There are some quality games in there that could give you hours and hours of gameplay, without paying anything.

Nice one op, lots of awesome stuff for you to enjoy. Now you get to enjoy the other half of the Japanese game industry! Worth rifling through all the pro slim stuff, some good advice peppered through the thread. Download that gravity rush 2 demo ASAP!

Do you have a 4K TV and could you elaborate as to why you feel that way? I ask because I keep going back and forth.
I do.

I mean, for stuff like XV and Ratchet it's nice, but it's nowhere near the 4K gaming experience you get on the TV just hooking a PC up. It's closer to a base PS4 than a PC, and in most games it's the same as a base PS4.

If it's worth it to you for the differences in the supported games, go for it I guess. If I had the choice again now though, I'd just get the slim and GC.

No one's going to abandon the PS4 for Pro only but the difference in the versions will only increase as devs start maxing out PS4. At the very least you'll get more games rendering at native or checker boarded 4K, which already is a huge IQ difference compared to 1080p.

Regardless, there's absolutely no chance a PS5 comes out before 2020 at the earliest. You're still future proofing for the next couple of years with a Pro.

I'll bet my account on it that is get's announced and possibly released in 2019.

You can save this if you'd like.

Pro is worth it even on standard HD.

I have both, pro in the main room, standard upstairs. The quality and performance difference in the upgraded titles is very noticeable. My young kids friends always mention it when I make them go upstairs to play lol.

If you have the means, the hardrive and upgrade specs are absolutely worth it even on 1080p screens. Especially if you're going to play Uncharted and Rachet.

I just got back from getting the PS4 Slim Uncharted 4 Bundle from Best Buy + $50 gift card and a copy of Bloodborne. Unfortunately, they didn't have Overwatch. I went to Toys R Us to get it, but it was selling the Origins edition only for $59 when I thought it was going for $39. Still need to get a hard drive at some point.

I think Overwatch is on sale digitally on PSN (for $39) if you want to go that route.

You gotta get PS+ especially if you want Overwatch don't forget.

I'll consider doing that.

Oh man haha. Just you wait.

Yeah, I'm mentally prepared to have Bloodborne kick my ass several times. If its anything like Monster Hunter, then the game will eventually click with me and will get better over time.

Use your gift card to buy Knack.

Haha, I don't think I'll be playing that game ever.

What type of games you into, OP?

In terms of genre, mainly action, platformer, adventure, JRPG and shooters. I don't have any interest in fighting, sports or racing. I typically dislike most AAA western games too.

You gotta get PS+ especially if you want Overwatch don't forget.

Yeah, I'll set it up but probably not tonight. I have work tomorrow at 1:30 -7:30 and then 10:30-7:30 on Christmas and 11:00-8:00 shifts on Monday and Tuesday, so I wont get much time to set up let alone play anything until next year. :(

It's funny... I just realized that the 4KTV in the living room is attached to the wall, so I can't easily access the HDMi port. I guess I'll have to try out my older HDTV for now.

get Ratchet and Clank

check out Resogun and Alienation, DD only though

The fact that you own a 4k tv already I would get the PS4 Pro. The improvements to image quality alone has been worth it to me. Goodbye jaggies. And better load times, framerate, graphical effects are just bonuses on top of that.

Let alone the fact that it comes with twice the storage and extra USB ports as well. In addition the peace of mind that despite a minor delta in cost, you now have the best place to play Playstation titles, and the best place to play multiplatform games on console unless you have a strong gaming PC. Furthermore, and admittedly this is speculation, but I think with MS and Sony both doing mid-generation refreshes, PS5 might be some ways off.

EDIT: Whelp, nevermind. Have fun with the base PS4.

More than half of the replies in the thread recommend a Pro although the user hasn't shown any interest on it nor anyone has asked if the user has a 4k TV or any interest on buying one.

Do you have a 4k TV? Check the number of games that support Pro and then the number of games that give any improvements on non-4k TVs and make your own decision.

Edit: No seriously, the amount of replies in this thread that could be confused with a commercial is mind-boggling

OP - bear in mind this poster is very anti-PS4 Pro, so take that bias into account.

OT - if you can afford the extra $100 get a Pro, if not get a Slim.

If you paid attention to the thread discussion not the thread title you would have seen he/she made their choice on the slim.

And I'm with Shari the pro at this point in time isn't worth it unless your a IQ whore. Games so far don't magically run better, they just look cleaner.

And there were better deals for the slim, and the person's last console was a wii.

What's the best current deal on the PS4 Pro?

You missed the best ones already. I'm waiting till next year for that random sale at Target or Best Buy or where ever that drops the price down to closer to $300 or they bundle the system with a bunch of extras like some big name games or an extra controller or some such.

Thanks for the thread policing junior mod. I responded to a post on the first page from someone who is in principle opposed to the concept of iterative consoles before reading the remainder of the thread, so sue me.

I went with the slim for my Christmas gift to myself. I won't be getting a 4K tv for probably 5 years or so. The slight IQ improvements of the pro weren't worth $150 and the 3 free games to me.

Congrats OP.

Only buy ONE game 😂😂.

Otherwise you'll be standing there tonight, like I literally am right now, trying to decide what I "feel" like playing.

Leaning R&C.....

Football is on...probably won't play anything...derp.

The thread is like 3 pages? And honestly right now there are no bundles for pro, so all in all going slim is the best deal for maximizing what you can get.

Also just because I'm a junior doesn't take away that you didn't follow the thread. Or see that the person doesn't buy a lot of consoles. Which was in the OP.

I just played and beat R&C. Game was great IMO. Some of the bosses are actually quite challenging compared to a lot of other games out there nowadays

OP already bought a Slim. And sure, whatever helps you feel more comfortable with your purchase. Congratulations on not falling for the hype, OP.
Dude stop the nonsense. So people think differently than you, big deal. I guess the OP fell for the hype because some say PS4 only is selling on hype. Rofl

the hell is this reply lol ..

OP and other users are free to make the more price conscious decision to get a Slim and use the savings to get more games to go, which is perfectly A-OK. That doesn't change the fact that PS4 Pro is *objectively* the best PS4 model available right now, there's no hype to it. It's a fact.

Have fun! Uncharted 4, Bloodborne, and Overwatch (when you get it) are brilliant games.

That's not really whats being argued for the most part. It really comes down to, is the $399 Pro worth the extra $150 over the slim? Is that extra performance worth $150 worth of games? Does that person have a 4K Tv? Does that person see, or care, about the performance difference on a 1080p( if thats what they have) to pay a premium for it? It comes down to the individual's value system.

As I said in a prior post, I personally backed out of a OG Ps4 sale with the intent to go Pro, specifically because I realized the difference between what I'd get in the sale and what I'd need to put in at current Pro pricing, was less important to me than putting it towards the Switch, or if performance is truly a driving factor, upgrading my PC to a 1070 and blowing the socks off the Pro. There's alot of factors weighing which way a prospective buyer goes.

EDIT: I see you edited your post which does speak to people determining to make pricing decisions based on what they value.

Of course Amazon only just recently processed my gift card balance... took so long! Oh well, I'm content with the Best Buy deal. Anyway, does anyone know of any good hard drive deals? Papacheeks kindly posted the HGST Travelstart 1TB 7K100 ( 7200 RPM32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s) from Newegg.com for $56 + a promo code discount. This offer ends tomorrow if anyone wanted to know.

Yep, edited my reply because it seemed half-baked.

Asking to buy a beefy gaming PC is a whole another discussion altogether. Although in this case OP has already bought the Slim, they did mention they have a 4K TV earlier in the topic.

As far as questions like extra performance for the $150 difference goes, I would say yes. You're getting a (mostly) 4K gaming console for $399 which is not only going to be the best way to play all future PS4 games, but has also been retroactively retooled to play some of the best games in the PS4 library (exclusive or otherwise) in a much higher fidelity than ever before. Sure it doesn't magically make all games double in frame rate, but it does make the performance more stable in just about every case EXCEPT Skyrim, which I think is the only Pro enabled game left which while offering native 4K, has minor performance hitches not present in the OG version.

That's a decent enough deal, most users will recommend you get a 1TB Firecuda SSHD instead, even though the SSD cache is fairly low sized and the drive otherwise is a 5400 RPM. Tests seem to show SSHD's have a somewhat decent impact on load times regardless.

At what point is the initial price point the driving factor? A console is inherently a multi-year, 10+ games, many hundreds of dollars investment for ~most folks on this forum. We could argue the same for any console when it first comes out.

If you're jumping into the PS4, 3 years into it's life and plan on playing it for several years to come (maybe getting a 4k TV, maybe not - maybe getting PSVR, maybe not), the default option IS TO GET A PS4 Pro. I'm sorry. It just is. Yes, if you're on a serious budget or you're not ~really much of a gamer, or you're not planning on getting a 4k TV for 5 years, you could chose the SLIM, but that's a bunch of ifs... Who knows they WON'T get a 4k next year. The damn things are getting so cheap.

This has been kind of thrown out the window now that we're getting iterations. Being able to rely on a console's life span over several years is now changing that definition of investment because the business model is changing before our eyes and we don't even know what it's going to look like anymore because a year ago, we didn't even see this coming and we don't know what the plan is for the future.

Plus, if someone wants to get one console and this performance investment is worthwhile to them, a Scorpio now is in the cards with it being less than a year away. So getting a Slim now and a Scorpio later might be a better play than getting a Pro now.

Congrats on the ps4 enjoy it. For me personally it's climbing up the list as my all time favorite system already.

When you play Bloodborne don't get discouraged at the start. You will die a lot at the beginning and that's ok. After about quarter way through the game it starts to get overall easier but still challenging. It is my game of the generation already and don't know if anything will be able to pass it.

There are a lot of quality indies on the ps4 some of my favorite are.

Resogun
Transistor
Axiom Verge

Unfinished Swan

AAA ps4 games that are up there for me personally

Uncharted 4
Until Dawn
Wolfenstein new order
Final Fantasy 15
Digimon cyber sleuth (I know it's not triple A but in my heart it is. If there was no Uncharted 4 this would be my Goty)
Order 1886 if you want a quick platnium trophy and to see the ps4 as a showcase.

There is a bunch more out there. Like others have said make sure to check the ps store weekly deals especially if you are a plus member. Every month during the 3rd weekend they have a flash sale that has something that you can get. Because of these deals and ps+ free games my backlog is over 200 games now a days.

Enjoy the system and especially the future games that are coming.

OP, I haven't read the whole thread. But since you seem to be a Best Buy shopper, I recommend getting GCU for 20% discounts on games if you don't already have it.

My favorite games this gen so far have been Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3, and Witcher 3.

PS4 has great Flash sales too. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1&2 are on sale right now y'all.

Pick up The Last of Us and Uncharted Collection, if you haven't played them before.

For new games this gen, I also suggest Until Dawn, Uncharted 4 (if you don't go with the bundle), Rachet & Clank, and Infamous SS / First Light.

You have a lot of catching up to do.

Imo, nothing has changed, on Sony's side at least.
PS4 Pro is last of its kind. Pro is not an iteration, in a sense that you get exclusive game and generation gets blurred. It is just a better PS4, that comes out 3 years after the OG.
The next one will be PS5.

I would buy PS4 Pro now if i wanted a console.
We wont know how MS will treat Scorpio, it may be the iteration console some have feared and disliked.

Well of course a PC is whole nother argument. I was only giving you my personal reasons. Everyone has their own circumstances that factor into this. Even if I didnt have a gaming PC, selling the ps4 for $175 and then having to fork over $225 for upgraded performance? My value system told me I'd rather spend that towards a switch, giving me access to an entirely different ecosystem. That doesn't mean I don't acknowledge the merits of the Pro. It also doesn't mean I'm less of a gamer, as ridiculously suggested below and I will respond to accordingly.

Ultimately, I'm guessing the OP may be aware of all that you say. The question, do they care enough to pay that extra? They're the ones who have to weigh what they value most when making a purchasing decision.

If you're jumping into the PS4, 3 years into it's life and plan on playing it for several years to come (maybe getting a 4k TV, maybe not - maybe getting PSVR, maybe not), the default option IS TO GET A PS4 Pro. Yes, people are on a budget and if they have $400 to spare, maybe the money is better spent on a slim plus games. Of course it comes down to personali preference, individual value systems, and a bunch of ifs. I more or less threw in a bunch of scenarios to basically state that this isn't a one size fits all solution. But you are clearly placing your own value system on this and declaring that THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO DO IT. It's not, and its fucking arrogant to say that someone choosing a slim is somehow less of a gamer. Get that elitist BS out of here, please.

Hiltz when you say you are new to HD gaming do you mean you have been playing SD devices like 3DS or do you mean you didn't make the jump to PS4/XBO? Just curious
