About to buy a PS4

Imo, nothing has changed, on Sony's side at least.
PS4 Pro is last of its kind. Pro is not an iteration, in a sense that you get exclusive game and generation gets blurred. It is just a better PS4, that comes out 3 years after the OG.
The next one will be PS5.

I would buy PS4 Pro now if i wanted a console.
We wont know how MS will treat Scorpio, it may be the iteration console some have feared and disliked.

Whats next weeks lotto numbers? You seem to have a great deal of insight that the Pro is the last of its kind. Its seems more like the start of a trend to abandon the idea of closed boxes that are gasping for air at generations end.

Hiltz when you say you are new to HD gaming do you mean you have been playing SD devices like 3DS or do you mean you didn't make the jump to PS4/XBO? Just curious

I never owned a PS3 or an Xbox 360, just a DS Lite and Wii. However, I have played a few Xbox and PS3 games, albeit briefly. I was just never interested in getting either console's offerings, especially in terms of exclusives. Not much has changed so far with the PS4, but the third party support has some games will hopefully make up the difference, especially when I have missed out on many franchises and modern new IP.

think I'll save up some money on the side before buying a lot more games for PS4 once Nintendo releases more info about the Switch on January 12th next year. I'd really hate to miss out on Zelda, 3D Mario, Splatoon, Mario Kart and whatever Retro Studios and Monolith Soft are working on next.

Because that is what Sony tells us, they are not blurring the lines with Pro.
There is no reason to disbelief their words.
Pro specs are a nice bump, but nothing too overboard and at $399, its amazing value if one wants to get into console gaming. Pro launch timing is perfect too.
Imo this is the way to do console hardware going forward. A nice mix of iteration and not getting all messy like PC and mobile phones platform.

And how many people do you think would have bought a Ps4 if Sony had told us all back in 2013 that a mid-gen refresh would occur 3 years into the next generation? I wouldn't bet your savings on that.

Oh, I forgot about some of those older games like Wolfenstein, I might consider getting that one. It'll take me a while to look through all the indie games available. Thanks for the PS+ info.

Wolfenstein: The New Order is awesome. One of the best games released in the past few years.

I keep nearly pulling the trigger on a PS4 and not at the last minute.

I want TLG, I bought a PS3 for it the week it was announced... but aside from that I keep looking and finding nothing else I wanna play.

Uncharted formula lost me at 3. I enjoyed The Last of Us on PS3 but have no desire to pay it again.

FPS and online gaming has no appeal to me.

I want 2D platformers, Metroidvanias, third person adventures (ideally not overly cinematic stuff or shooting a ton like UC, stuff with actual gameplay substance) , and isometric games like Renegade Ops (my favorite Ps360 gen game). I keep looking and not seeing much of anything that fits.

Someone convince me to grab a PS4 with some game recommendations that fit what I'm looking for please.

I also want a xBone for Ori and the Blind Forest but I'm having the same difficulty finding other games worth playing. Gaming is passing me by, it sucks.

Get the slim at BB, use the GC to get TLG, and trade in Uncharted to get something that fits your wants better?

You're not going to probably get a better deal until next fall

Things have changed. It used to be I could buy a console on launch day and be set for the generation for that platform. That's no longer true. The Pro is a mid generation iteration. This is something we didn't even know would happen at the beginning of this generation. So let's not be so quick to know exactly what's going to happen in the next three years since it's clear the console market is evolving to something new and different than the tradition for the last three decades.

I see, did you game on PC?
If not then yeah the 3Rd party support in PS4 will be more than enough to cover the exclusive offerings that never clicked with you.
Either way you can never go wrong with PS4 it has every genres from niche Japanese to mainstream AAA games.
Good luck bro :)

Edit: have you considered buying a used one? You can find very cheap ones and in good condition due to many upgrading to PS4 Pro

And how many people do you think would have bought a Ps4 if Sony had told us all back in 2013 that a mid-gen refresh would occur 3 years into the next generation? I wouldn't bet your savings on that.
People still bought iPhones when they know those are a yearly thing. You dont even get the benefit of long generation support with phones.

So ya, ps4 sales will get somewhat affected downwards, likewise pro will get higher sales(for the waiters). Things will even out, as long as Sony shows the fiery committment they done so far

It's not the money. I am not sure what else there is to play besides TLG. Been looking...

OP, my PS4 is basically just a Destiny machine. With a couple small exceptions (Digimon Cyber Sleuth is the big one), I'm using my PS4 less and less and literally every other console I own more.

Pro is a waste of money, though. The improvements aren't really enough to matter, and there's little indication they will be. If you want a Pro, you won't see much benefit unless you get a TV that supports it, and if you have a sound system, well, you'll have to replace your receiver too...

Wow, I never would have guessed you were a Sony fan.

once Nintendo releases more info about the Switch on January 12th next year. I'd really hate to miss out on Zelda, 3D Mario, Splatoon, Mario Kart and whatever Retro Studios and Monolith Soft are working on next.

In that case forget the PRO and just get the slim and Switch. Have fun!

More than half of the replies in the thread recommend a Pro although the user hasn't shown any interest on it nor anyone has asked if the user has a 4k TV or any interest on buying one.

Do you have a 4k TV? Check the number of games that support Pro and then the number of games that give any improvements on non-4k TVs and make your own decision.

Edit: No seriously, the amount of replies in this thread that could be confused with a commercial is mind-boggling

What is wrong with owning the Pro and a 1080p TV? I for example own the Pro and just a 1080p TV and the improvements are already totally worth it in my opinion. I get amazing IQ thanks to downsampling, shorter loading times (even for unpatched games), better framerates and lots of other graphical improvements that I don't need a 4K TV for.

Don't get the slim. Get the original PS4 if you are on a budget. Just in case you have a surround sound reciver the PS4 slim does not have a optical port for surround sound.

OP you really don't need to get the Pro if you don't want it. Especially with how cheap Slims are going for now days.

Unless you are super concerned with marginal visual upgrades you can use that extra money to load up on games.

Yeah, I'm mentally prepared to have Bloodborne kick my ass several times. If its anything like Monster Hunter, then the game will eventually click with me and will get better over time

Haha, yea, different games of course, but there's definitely a similar feel there that makes MonHun a good comparison. Speaking of which, you might want to check out God Eater! You can get a nice PS4 collection with both games in it, and you might like some stuff in there :)

OP - bear in mind this poster is very anti-PS4 Pro, so take that bias into account.

OT - if you can afford the extra $100 get a Pro, if not get a Slim.

Yes please, by all means, check my post history against say chandoog and decide who's biased.

Also and just for shits and giggles since the OP already decided, read through the thread again and see who was trying to convince him on getting what and who was trying to convince him to spend some time doing some research.

I dont have anything against pro, but I do cringe at the pro ad circlejerk in the supposedly best videogame board on the internet.

Edit: Congrats on your new system OP, you gonna have a hell of a time with Bloodborne.

People still bought iPhones when they know those are a yearly thing. You dont even get the benefit of long generation support with phones.

But I'm guessing that's not the model console gamers want, is it? Never mind that those phones are heavily subsidized by contracts. A benefit of consoles has always been that no matter at what point you bought it in its life cycle, you were playing the game optimally( not counting if that game came out on PC, to be clear, but within the console space) without having to worry about mid generation models rendering the launch model technically obsolete.

Was going to post recommending Slim, but then I saw you already bought it. Congrats, the thing is a beast!

You said you don't typically like western AAA games. You could try to challenge that with giving Witcher 3 a chance. If you are into games with high quality stories and writing at all. If not, then ignore this recommendation. The game really has a great sense of adventure too. It's also one of the best examples of what you have been missing out on.

Yeah, that seems to be a popular SSHD model these days. Digital Foundry's run tests and seems SSHDs come at a nice middle ground between the stock drive and an SSDs in terms of read and seek times.

Yes please, by all means, check my post history against say chandoog and decide who's biased.

?

calm down buddy.

If posting actual reasons why a Pro would be a better choice and supporting games which do makes me biased, then what does it make you with posts targeting under performing Pro patches or singling out users who're saying good things about a Pro as shills or advertisers ? Have a look at your own post history before talking about someone else's, friend.

You bought the PS4 at launch? You will still get to play all the PS4 games for the generation.

I only casually played games on PC, but it's from the late 90s running Windows XP. The main games I used to play were Star Craft & Brood Wars, Diablo 2: LOD, Counter-Strike and Team Fortress 2 as well as MU Online beta (Origin).

not anymore

After starting Ratchet & Clank last night I highly recommend it. I really liked my first 2 hours with it.

I own a PS4 Pro and I would strongly recommend you stick with the slim.

Actually, I would recommend checking out ebay/craigslist/facebook and getting a used PS4 since a lot of people are upgrading to the newer models. The original model is probably the best looking one, and you'd save money to cover a hard drive upgrade.

I also have a SSD in mine and would not recommend you do that either. It's just not really cost effective. If you don't care about that, then go for it. I'd do it again, but I would never recommend it to someone else.

Edit:
Whoops, I'm late. You made the right choice IMO.

If he has a surround receiver why would he want to degrade the audio with optical? Unless it's really old and doesn't support he audio there's no reason to use it.

Get Diablo 3 if you haven't played it already.

I just want to really emphasise this point, please set up 2-Step Verification on your PSN account as soon as it's up and running.

It doesn't make your account 100% secure but it is an essential additional layer security that you can add to your account with very little effort. If you don't do it, you really could end up regretting it at some point.

Well in Canada there are much better deals on the Slim and it comes with Uncharted 4. I've been following the Pro news and let's just say it's not really lighting up the airwaves with many games that offer significant upgrades. Seeing the lack of any tangible benefits to the older catalogue and big games getting ignored like Bloodborne, I'm not sure how much value there is right now. Sure the next few years will be good but offering a midcycle new PS4 now means the PS5 is just a few years away.

So the PS4 Pro would be the better option to go with in the long run. So it's still a good deal even if someone isn't interested in virtual reality?

Yes the pro is a steal in the long run. You are basically future proofing your upcoming games. I also think the differences will get much more noticeable as time passes and first party devs truly harness the power of the pro. As of now i think it's just brute forcing increased res and performance.

I'm in the same boat. I have been to BB like 4 times and had a PS4 in my hands, but decided not to get it. I played Uncharted 4 and was underwhelmed, I'm gonna play 3rd party games on steam, but I am looking forward to TLOU2 and Spiderman game, so maybe I'll get it then.

I feel like you made a good choice. As a first time guy, i went with the PRO, but i would have been better off buying a slim. Even bought a 4k SONY TV for it lol. Had a guy bring his OG PS4 to compare over some PRO games, the jump wasn't mind blowing as they said it was. It's better, but i'm not blown away or "wowed". I don't give a damn about VR either haha.

You probably would have had a possibility of getting a dud with issues too. I had to return my first one because it was super loud, even on non pro games. The new one is a little better. It's quieter, not "whisper quiet"....

It's not bad though. I just wanted to play the exclusives, so the slim would have been a better fit. I would have waited longer if i knew Persona was going to be delayed... Right after i bought it too!!

I also think you could have finessed a Slim for $229 with the GC at Best Buy by price matching Amazon or Walmart if you are in the US. Maybe a tip for anybody interested in a slim today.

If you plan on playing a lot of games, i would invest in at least a 1TB, my friend has tons of games and he has to delete back to back. If you buy an external, make sure it's one you can remove from it's case and put in the PS4. I had a guy buy an external and he thought it would work, but one of the ports was soldered into the drive so he couldn't.

Good luck.

No offence but Seriously dude you sound like you were never interested in Playstation to begin with. You sound like someone who would be best suited for Nintendo games.

If the last guardian was your only reason during 2009 to pick up a PS3 then Playstation is not your eco-system.

If you like JRPG'S or Japanese games then Playstation should be the console of choice. If you prefer platformers though playstation has a couple coming out like Crash trilogy, and have had games like the Puppeteer, they are a jack of all trades system with specializing in having everything. Just not a lot of one specific type of game.

If you want metroidvania type experiences, go indie there's tons. But Sony is all about diversity. if you like 2d/3D arcade type games Horsemarque has got you.

Thanks for explaining what that is. I plan on setting up the console tonight when my brother is over. I'm still deciding on whether to get Dishonored 2, Ratchet & Clank or maybe something else like Titanfall 2.

I was comparing prices, and found the 2TB Seagate firecuda for $109 while newegg and Amazon have it for $114. I can also use the $50 best buy gift card on it too. Do you need any special screw drivers or other accessories in order to change the PS4's internal hard drive? Sorry for the stupid question, but I'm ignorant on these kind of things.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/searchp...rue&iht=y&usc=All+Categories&ks=960&keys=keys

If you like to play single player games i would like to suggest some of my favourites: (They are already pretty cheap on PSN. Sorry if I'm repeating other gaffers)

-The last of us Remastered - from the developers of uncharted but with more emphasis on stealth and a great story.
-Gravity Rush Remastered - i think it is on sale on PSN and it uses cool new mechanics
-InFamous Second Son - you can play this one withouth playing the ps3 ones. It's a brand new and cool story and the powers of the character are really fun to use. It's an open world game.

I would also suggest Playstation Plus service because you will get to know new games (often indies which you seem to don't know a lot) every month. Also, you need Plus to play online.

As online games go:
-Rocket League - it's an original game where you play soccer with cars and might not seem at first but it's a lot of fun.

It's a difficult one with the game as you haven't listed a bad one.

I'm assuming from the prices that you've listed that you're in the USA? If you're going to download games then you may want to set up a UK account too, it's easy enough to do. I'm in the UK but have a UK, USA and Japanese account on the PS4.

I'm not sure of the USA prices at the moment but in the UK all those games are currently on sale.
Dishonored 2 - £29.99
Ratchet & Clank - £15.99
Titanfall 2 - £29.99

You'll find that although the UK often has higher prices we seem to get better sales and have them more often. At the moment there are hundreds of PS4 games on sale, big and small, so if you have a bit of spare money you could probably set yourself up for a while.

I'd always recommend buying PSN points online rather than adding payment details directly, I use cdkeys.com which allows me to buy points for the UK and USA. Be aware that points cards can only be used in their own region.

You may be thinking that setting up a second account is a bit too much for you at the moment but bear it in mind that the UK sale has some items on sale until 6th of January and others that are on sale until 20th January.

If you are thinking of doing that, feel free to ask about the UK prices and me or somebody else will check them for you and the date that you'll need to buy them by to get the discount.

It's just a standard Phillips screwdriver for the hard drive, I can't remember the size but if you have access to the sort of screwdrivers that most people would in their houses, you should be fine.

EDIT:
Actually, have a look in this thread, you may find something useful there. :)

[EU] PSN January Sale - Save up-to 60% off - PS4, PS3 & Vita - 500+ items

BONUS EDIT:
It's not my video but have a look at this. Changing a hdd is really simple on a PS4.

How to change a PS4 Pro hard drive

There are two versions of the firmware, one for updating to the latest version and second for installing a new hdd. It's the one near the bottom of this page, download it now and you'll be ready to go. It shows you the file structure on the USB drive that you need to use, it should all be pretty simple. :)

Consider Dishonored 1 if you haven't played it as it's good and cheap. Ratchet and Clank should be a good option.

For HD all you need a small screw driver for the HD plate screws. It's just a regular smaller philips.

Edit: Ob yeah, post above is absolutely right, you should absolutely try out Gravity Rush Remastered for PS4. It's a great and should be right up your alley, OP. I also second PS+ recommendation as it will easily pay its way in sales and in free games (free while subscribed).

Yes well you stick with the pom-pom routine. Time will tell what these iterative consoles mean for the industry. I believe the OP has already made a purchasing decision in favor of the slim.

Yea Nintendo takes care of a lot of my needs, looking forward to the Switch, hoping it has the software I want, the concept is perfect.

Can't really do PC games, I run a 2012MacBook Air and not in the market for a computer anytime soon. I travel a ton which is another reason why I'm hesitant on PS4, it's so big. I usually fly with just carry on so taking a console will be a pain. Again, the Switch is perfect for my potential use, as long as the games are there.

No offence but Seriously dude you sound like you were never interested in Playstation to begin with. You sound like someone who would be best suited for Nintendo games.

Not sure why I'd be offended. It's video games .

I'm not a PlayStation guy or Nintendo guy, I just don't have time to follow all the games that come out anymore. I'm not sure what it means that I was never interested in PlayStation to begin with considering I had PS1-3, and said I nearly bought a 4 a number of times, just want the kinds of games that I like before I invest in the console. I loved PS3 and I described the games I like in my first post, which PS3 had in droves, and I want those kinds of experiences on PS4. I asked for some suggestions based on what I like cuz I haven't found them myself through cursory searches and browsing the game aisle.

The reason I picked up PS3 was TLG yes, but it doesn't mean there weren't tons of other great experiences. I mean, TLG wasn't even out yet at that time obviously I must have picked up other games right? I also liked Dead Nation a lot, top down isometric games, local multi especially, were awesome in PS3. Again if anyone has suggestions for similar on PS4 I'm all ears.

I'll google housemarque. Not sure what that is.

Edit: dead nation devs, and outland. Cool. Good suggestion for me then... so is Nex Machina good?

Go for the Slim OP, i did it too this week, and i'm in love with my Playstation.

I also switched over from the WiiU (although i did already had a PSN Account due to my Vita)

Not sure why I'd be offended. It's video games .

Yea they did Resogun, Alienation which I hear is good. Plus they are doing a Mega man inspired game called matter fall as well.

It just sounded like you were not interested in Playstation since you were being specific in what you looked for in games. Playstation now is not the same playstation it was couple gens ago.

Like if you want more gameplay type games and less cinematic games than horsemarque, Sucker Punch, and all the JRPG's like Persona 5, Tales series, Gravity rush which I would say you might like. Then there's Yakuza series along with games like Neir, among many other smaller games.
