AC: Unity's devs: 60FPS doesn't look real and is less cinematic, 30FPS feels better

I guess I imagined that COD4 felt like I was playing an action movie. It controlled really well but it was probably less cinematic than I remember, you know, cause 60fps is just naturally less cinematic and stuff.

Whelp..... I guess thats it.

This "30 fps is more cinematic" nonsense appears to have caught on. Its a real shame because it is absolute nonsense.

No wonder Ubi stopped supporting the WiiU

I'm all for this. Really don't get devs sometimes. Turn down some useless effects like over-the-top epilipsy causing chromatic aberration, bloom, etc, and instead focus on the staples, get 1080p, get 60fps, then add the pretty stuff until that base-line is no longer achievable.

A sharp 1080p image at solid 60fps looks and plays better than a 912p 26fps particle and effect smeared fxaa mess. It's like looking through dirty sunglasses.

So FF13 PC supporting 60 FPS is merely another piece of evidence that S-E hates PC gamers? They don't want them to experience the full cinematic splendor.

The really funny part here isn't that one or two of these games aren't 1080p. It's that none of them are.

Holy fuck :lol

I particularly like the comparison to Ratchet and Clank... like people didn't bitch like crazy when it finally dropped to 30fps.

Ratchet and Clank is truly an awful example, ever since the series went 30fps "coincidently" the series has been critically worse off.

Assassin's Creed Unity is locked to 30fps on PC? News to me

They told you in their quotes.
30 is their goal, 30 is best for action adventure.
So by going 60, they are lying to you, 60 doesn't look real remember?
And plus, this is their brand new engine from the ground up for consoles/PC to use, and if the target goal is 30...then?

But come on bro...come on.

While I can play 30fps games, any developer that categorically discards 60fps loses all of my respect immediately. I can understand if certain games end up being 30fps because of, you know, reasons; but to see a developer explicitly stating that they will always prioritize some trivial eye candy over something as crucial as framerate just makes me want to stay away from all of their games.

1 - HD female characters are too hard

2 - parity resolution because debate over it is unacceptable

3 - 30fps feels better than 60fps

Haha oh shit, I forgot it was AC unity that had that crap spewed about, good grief the sooner this game is behind us the better for Ubi's PR.

This response has it all:

-Bitching about how it's harder to do.
-Comparing it to a different medium.
-Pointing the finger at other developers, "Everyone does it!"
-Outright lies about performance and feel.

Bravo, Ubisoft

Cinemas don't even use 30FPS, that's more like NTSC TV.

30FPS makes everything look stable, but not really great.

Out of curiosity, what are the alternatives?

Something along the lines of "Hey guys, we decided it was really worth the effort to get our game running at 60 FPS and we probably couldn't pull it off on both consoles while maintaining the same resolution, so we just gave up. Sorry." ?

I can sort of understand saying 'it feels better' if we're talking purely about being able to make a better looking game at 30hz than 60hz. Or something that is more 'cinematic' in terms of rendering quality per frame vs a 16ms frame budget.

I cannot understand saying a lower update rate is better all else being equal.

I cannot understand saying that the number of pixels don't matter...

He's kind of mixing all these points together in a not very agreeable way. If you want to say 'we prefer 30fps because we can make a much better looking image' then that's fine. The rest is another story.

This is probably a really bad post, but my genuine reaction to reading this was a rage induced "FUCK OFF!", and I don't even care about this series. The worst part is that some people actually believe this horseshit and start spreading it as fact. That includes people who develop games.

As someone who really isn't bothered by fps, these type of statement are seriously so pathetic. It's sad seeing smaller studios such as RaD saying it as well.

Seriously? Where have you been man, it's been the hot topic here for days.

I know about the parity thing. But it's the first time I've heard that the PC version will be locked at 30.

If true, then okay. I understand the complaints. My comments were based on the assumption that this was just on console

I've come to the conclusion that Ubisoft have just decided to go along with the whole "any PR is good PR" line of thinking for Unity and just let their devs say whatever they want. Between no playable female character, British accents in Paris, 900p/30 parity and now 30fps > 60fps, has there ever been a game with as much pre-release controversy as AC Unity.

I'm perfectly fine with playing a game like Assassin's creed on 30fps, it's not a twitch-based shooter.
I'm fine with an explanation that they chose 30fps in order to fit in much more graphical fidelity.
Saying that 60fps in a game is bad just because it doesn't feel good is just stupid.

Why is it that Kojima and his team are one of the only developers who understand why 60FPS are so goddamn important?

Seriously, fuck this industry and all the lazy developers like Ubisoft.

Wtf... As if resolution gate didn't already sour me enough. Now they are going to tell me 60 fps feels worse?
Fuck these guys. I'm done.

30 fps is fine considering it's an ambitious title, but don't sit there and tell me I'm better off at 30 fps anyway.
