AC: Unity's devs: 60FPS doesn't look real and is less cinematic, 30FPS feels better

30FPS to make it more cinematic and 60FPS barely provides a benefit and looks weird.

These are silly things to say. Why can't they just say something like: "Well look at how great the visuals look otherwise, that's what we prioritized."
Because that makes sense. One can respect and understand creative technical decisions like that. One might even agree with them. I'd say visual detail is more important than 60FPS in an AC game.

But there is no debate that 60FPS in games is always better. Always. Looks smoother, feels more responsive. There is no downside.

I'm not like "60 FPS only or riot!!1" on every single game, but IMO, 60 FPS will always look and feel better while playing. At this point is sad to think that Ass Creed Unity is actually making buzz on the media, not because of the actual game and the usual stuff that involves it, but because of all this controversial comments from devs (The reason of why there's no females as a main character, the 900p parity, and now this...) "Be careful, Ubisoft".

I'm on board with this. The game looks great and I have it pre-ordered, but the PR has been abysmal. Get your house in order, Ubisoft.

Just to be clear, these comments are directed solely at the console versions, right? It's not like the pc version is going to be locked at 30.

For ac games I dont think it matters, the controls aren't that responsive anyway. It makes a huge difference in a game like the Arkham series.

This is not even close to a PR nightmare for them. They know majority of people who buy their game don't give a damn and the few that do are still going to buy it anyway. I sometimes wish NeoGaf had a little more influence than they do; 60fps would be a great standard and might even push hardware to be MORE capable than it is for future console iterations, but this just doesn't effect sales at all.

the fps isn't the achillies heel in the franchise. its the mechanics and mission content.

i won't be playing this game for the same reason i wouldn't watch a shit film at the movies. i don't care how cinematic it is.

ubi should focus on what they CAN achieve (read: fix), not justifying targets they've missed.

so why bother justifying it in the first place? all they are achieving is pissing off the (as you rightly said) 'few that... are still going to buy it anyway'. i don't get what could possibly be motivating them other than "buzz" (ie all news is good news).

Jesus Ubi, what the FUCK are you doing?

Are they deliberately trying to piss people off? I don't understand.

Awful PR. But if Watch Dogs and Destiny are any indication, terrible PR does nothing to stop huge marketing budgets.

What the fuck is wrong with just saying "we care more about image quality, we wanted to prioritize elements like X and Y over a framerate that our research shows doesn't impact most of our players as much as image quality"?

insulting people's intelligence by acting as though it was a purely artistic decision, and then backing that with dubious bullshit

I mean, shit, anyone who believes Into the Nexus lost nothing from the transition to 30fps and looked more cinematic, doesn't deserve to act like they know what they're saying to begin with. That's not even an opinion, that's just dumb.

Maybe its the game dev version of click-bait. I mean they are basically competing against themselves with two ac games coming out.

Here at Ubisoft, we've decided that high resolution video games just aren't approachable enough. Therefore, we're proud to announce that the next Assassins creed video game will be developed using commodore64 technology to help improve the cinematic experience that the AC series always needed.

You know what? I don't mind games at 30 fps whatsoever, but these comments are just really poor. Run these folks through some media training ASAP.

"It doesn't look like the real thing"

I'm confused. What exactly looks like the real thing anyway? And in what way 30fps look closer to the real thing than 60fps? I mean, i don't see any judder in real life.

Are these people for real? Either these guys are terribly stupid or they assume that we are. Another low for Ubisoft then, i never had respect for them anyway. So, good job guys.

"And in other games it's the same - like the Rachet and Clank series [where it was dropped].

...which was met with much disapproval from many fans of that franchise, myself included. But if that kind of reception is what Ubisoft shooting for, then I'd say they're doing a pretty good job. Lol.

P.S. You spelled "Ratchet" wrong. >:(

I agree with this.

1080p with tons of visual eye candy, locked at 30fps is ideal.

They should offer a 60fps mode for those that seriously want it (with pared back visual and etc.).

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Their PR has been pretty bad lately :D

I always enjoy playing AC games so it doesn't bother me 30 or 60fps. Black Flag was beautiful and a ton of fun, so I'm hoping for something similar or better.

Still buying this day one.

By those comments if you run the game at 60fps you are ruining their artistic vision, the game was intended to run at 30 for that unmatched cinematic feel, amazing eh?

Even as someone that thinks 30fps is fine on consoles, I'm still in shock whenever statements like this come out. It's assinine and makes you seem like a complete fool.

hahahahahahaha

Ubisoft just shut up already. Don't try to hide your incompetency in the name of "cinematic experience". Idiots.

I think sales will show how little the market as a whole cares about res and fps. This game will sell crazy numbers. And not because of the resolution listed on the back of the case.

Jezus christ Ubi your on a roll aren't you?

Ok everyone let's start a hashtag campaign to get the frame rate we want.

#Unity24FPS. We need that true cinematic experience. The hell we need those 6 extra frames for?

Forgive me if I am wrong, buy didn't The Order 1866 people say the same thing?

Yeah there response was along the lines that "24fps doesn't feel good", like when the fuck would that ever be an acceptable framerate to play a game? Then said some shit about filmic or something and 1886 30fps.

Seriously why don't devs just come out and day, "Consumers want pretty visuals over high framerates, so that's is why we run games at 30fps so we make it look puuurty"

That isn't the situation at all though. (Almost) everyone is fine with 1080p and 30fps graphics if it's justified (i.e shortcomings in the hardware, engine not quite there etc.) Instead what Ubi has offered is a big fuck you to the gaming public, offering lies and misconceptions as fact to mislead gamers. They're telling us what is best for us, even though it's completely against what gamers, the industries, and Ubisoft themselves strive to achieve all the time. It's bollocks.

Is all of the cursing really justified? I would imagine it's against Neogaf rules, no? Anyways, I really hope the PC port is not locked to 30 FPS. I also hope it's well optimized and we don't have another Watch Dogs fiasco.

Not too sure about that. I've been seeing a lot of people cancel preorders, especially after the parity thing. This is on twitter, too, not just gaf.
I think the numbers will be down somewhat from the next generation only thing. I mean I still play on 360. But assassins creed is a huge franchise.

At the end only the numbers will show us. But I firmly believe resolution won't be a huge sticking point. I mean we all know outside gaf and other dedicated gaming communities, people generally aren't bothered by things like resolution and fps

Cursing isn't against the rules here, though they ask it to be kept to a minimum.

It is recommended that profanity be held to a minimum in order to keep the level of discourse high, and profanity should not be used when addressing others.

You can find all of that stuff in the TOS link at the top of every page.

Their backtracking and misleading statements are a bit confusing to me.

Ubisoft operates as if we are still in a time without social media and the internet,
where people can't cross reference previous claims with present ones.

There is something oddly unrealistic about that fluidity of motion to me. I think it's because in real life, you can't smoothly sweep your field of vision, you stagger your vision by focusing on many specific points, and 30fps is a more staggering/juddery aesthetic. However, in no way would I consider it to feel better.
