According to James Gunn, The Batman 2 doesn't even have a script at this point

Is this going to be another Joker situation where the director had an incredible idea for a one-off movie… and then the studio asked him to make another one?

Whilst I enjoyed his Batman albeit what I could make out seeing as the entire film was drenched in MOODY DARKNESS I have absolutely no desire to ever rewatch it again not to mention I couldn't tell you one thing about the plot it was so memorable, whereas you stick on the opening 5mins of a Dark Knight and my ass is glued to the seat right to the end.. for the umpteenth time, I have no desire for a new Matt Reeves Batman
 
I liked the first one and I'll definitely watch the next when it comes out. But with the amount of Batman movies we've had it's not like I'm desperately craving the next one as soon as possible.

I thought it was ok when i saw it but i have 0 recollection what it was about. Very strange.
 
Let's see, we've got:

- No script.
- Gunn: "Batman's my biggest issue in all of DC right now."
- Unprovoked assurances that the sequel definitely isn't canceled.

Not looking good...

I didn't care for the first one so it's not like I would mourn if they just skipped any sequels. I'd rather watch more TV shows in that universe instead as The Penguin was terrific.
 
I think you need to move on at this point. It isn't anyone's fault, it he got sick or whatever.

So it should be full steam ahead on the next Batman movie. Personally, I would like to see them do sequels and then rest and reboot. Trilogies are not required in most cases.

Edit: so if the Gunn Batman is Brave and Bold, do that for two movies then move on to an older noir Batman or for the love of GOD…Batman Beyond.

Whole movie felt like they were winging it and relying entirely on vibes. Every time anything came up it was immediately solved, then insert a moody load of nothing, then on to the next scene to present the viewer with something else that will be resolved before we cut away. Every time a little momentum kicked up and it felt like something was gonna happen it just petered out like a wet fart. Whole thing was cinematic blue balls and I say that as someone who often loves slow, atmospheric movies that I can just settle into.

I was completely perplexed by the hype and positive response to it. Best thing it has going is cinematography that was seemingly constructed for the purpose of looking good in shrunk down screenshots on social media.

There's also Reeves' impressive feat of somehow getting Jeffrey Wright to be mediocre.

I remember just a little. There was the funeral scene where there was some terrorist attack or something... they showed the full scene weeks before the movie came out and honestly it was better as a standalone than it was situated in the film... there was... Lenny Kravitz's daughter bitching about White Privilege.... and... Colin Farrell Penguin saying something like "I got you.. I... got.. you..." I think when they were playing the Batmobile level.

Aside from that the Twilight Vampire brooded about doing 'detective work' but I don't think he ever actually solved anything and then the movie ended. I miss the days of Christian Bale yelling at people.

A lot of modern blockbusters that are surprisingly successful are like porridge, a week later I just can't tell one bite from the next and it all turns into a indistinct slurry in my head. There's very little dynamics. I finally watched Dune Part One after years of hype and really didn't enjoy it at all despite expecting to and loving Villeneuve's other work. Now a few months later my memory of it is just a big sterile, droning, sand-coloured blob of that I feel nothing for.

Wasn't a fan of Guardians 2 either, but the company couldn't have been happier with the production process. Gunn apparently had that film wrap ahead of schedule and under budget.

Ensuring you finish a script before filming doesn't mean the script is great, but it does mean that you don't run into as many production problems and balloon the spending.

As for Batman Part 2, any personal issues Reeves may or may not be having aside, I can imagine struggling with a story. The first one has a really barebones plot and set of characters, and it's nothing we haven't seen before. The "realistic" Batman Reeves went for is very limited in what he can do.

Oh i am old(ish. 50) and my memory is crap but it hasn't happen with other movies.

I'm in my early 50's chap and whilst the ole memories aren't what they used to be probably due to copious amounts of chemicals ingested during the rave years I can still remember a good movie but BatMan was so dark and so bleak, there was no break, no levity, no shift in tone nor palette it was just 3hrs of Emo shit that blended the entire movie into one, hell I couldn't even tell you what the major action scenes where or if there where any lol

I Agree. The Penguin TV series was so much better than the Batman movie. I liked it when I saw it but I hardly remember anything about it now. All I remember is how murky and dark the visuals were.

Oh, and I'm in my late 50ies. It's clear that Neogaf is a forum primarily for middle aged Sony fans.

33 here. Plenty of movies I remember fine, but with a lot of recent blockbuster stuff there's something very flat about them, kind of like a song that is just one note and loud all the way through, there's no dynamics to make it memorable.
 
The best Batman movie will forever be BATMAN RETURNS and nobody will have ever have the balls to make something like it ever again.

It was 89 on steroids. The movie actually looks like a comic or cartoon, with incredible and gorgeous practical effects and set works.

I mean the climax of the movie of the movie was him hulking out to move a piece of metal so yeah Bale definitely had it better, funny voices aside.
 
I'm pretty sure Reeves had some health issues that took him out of the game for a solid year or two. That's what I've heard on two different podcasts with Hollywood insiders.

I would like to see a second film in that world. I thought Pattinson nailed it, and they really captured the Gotham from the comics. There's so many villains they could use too.

Thank you for the answers, I was mostly just trying to ease my mind as the movie just barely turned 3 years old at this point. So because of that if someone asked me who the villain was in The Batman and I was unable to recall that it was the Riddler, I would feel more worried about my own memory than the movie being lower quality.

I completely understand forgettable movies, but I feel like I have a period of time where I still remember some details here and there about them even if I forgot some of it due to how bland they might have been.

For example I still remember that Red Notice was a thief movie that starred Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne Johnson, and Gal Gadot even though that was a very, very skippable Netflix movie.

If I ever reach a point where I can't do that with a movie barely 3 years old, I feel like, and excuse the typical slang here, I might be cooked.

My main issue with it is that it is pretentious. It pretends to be a cerebral thriller akin to Seven but the story and events are just the most basic, boring cookie-cutter nonsense imaginable. The slow, meandering shots. Batman solving a stupid riddle we all know he will solve. The goofy thumb drive. The terrible "rata alata" slapstick. There's no tension at any moment anywhere in this movie.

All style, no substance. Unbelievably striking visuals, unbelievably dull story.

And another major gripe I have is that the Riddler is basically the good guy for 85% of the movie. The movie has a weird structure where it has a beginning, middle and end, and then another end because Reeves probably realized at some point that the Riddler going around killing deeply corrupt and evil politicians, policemen, drug dealers and mob bosses wasn't the best optic.

"O no Batman, please help stop this guy that goes around taking out the overwhelmingly corrupt people that actively make your city a hellhole!"
