Ace Combat V screens and update...

No, one of the great points is the lack of sim type play. Just a few knobs with the action focused on goals, dog fighting and such. Great story, sound and music. Great gameplay. Check it out. For $20...

I found Ace Combat 4 to be very easy on Normal, and I'm only a slightly above-average twitch gamer. Easy, but FUN, FUN, FUN.

Second Update, man this game sounds killer! Can't wait :D

Questions

DUDE PLEASE ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS

Can you kill you own teamates?

How are the graphics?

How is the music?

Is it difficult and is it intense (enemies firing missels at you etc)

Answer

As far as I can tell, you cannot kill your wingmen.

The graphics are awesome. Really crisp and the ground doesn't blur, at least not much, when you get closer to it, and there are even trees, 3D trees. There is also this cool little animation when you break the sound barrier, it kind of looks like you go through this really small cloud, and I can't hear any noise, but thats not to say there is none, and as far as I can tell, you can't break the sound barrier near the ground, well you can, but there no animation.

The music is great, really epic and emotional, very powerful and it really fits.

Yes it is VERY intense, the cargo planes that you have to destroy have heat-flares that they shoot off when you fire a missile so that your missiles chase the flare instead of the plane, and you barley have anytime to fire the missiles because the enemy's are ALWAYS on you and are constantly firing missiles, but luckily you have your wingmen, which do help when you ask them to cover, oh and this is only on easy or normal because it takes 3 missile hits for your plane to be destroyed.

Oh, and the color of the planes no longer represents its importance, but its damage, so green is no damage, orange is damaged, red is heavily damaged and, well, no triangle is no plane...

okay I had to resurrect this thread. :)

now that I have Ace Combat 5, I've thought more about that massive plane that I thought was a bomber, the one called the ARKBIRD.

regarding the ARKBIRD

...I do believe that Namco was inspired by NSAP. (National AeroSpace Plane) of the 1980s, announced by Ronald Reagan. also known as the X-30.

National Aerospace Plane or X-30. more than one concept/artists impression.

edit: there is another artists impression or concept picture of the X-30/NASP that I am searching the internet for. I think it might have been on the cover of Popular Science or Popular Mechanics or Aviation Week & Space Technology or some magazine like that.....

anyway, what do you think, do you think Namco's Arkbird was inspired by the NASP / X-30?

Yeah its out and it kicks ass. It was overshadowed by GTA SA though, I think they were released on the same day (stupid namco)

Ace Combat IV ownz AC5 though.

Doom Bringer, Did you beat the game yet? If so please help me out with the stage below.

I'm at the section where Blaze is searching for Nagase, but the helicopter searching for Nagase is constantly getting shot down by enemy aircaft, etc. What type of plane did you use during this mission?

Riskbreaker

If memory serves, the secret to this mission is that the Sea Goblin that's closest to you when you find Nagase is not the one you should be worried about. There's another Sea Goblin helicopter that comes in from the East edge of the screen that's mostly unprotected that needs to be the one you look out for. It's been a month or two since I've played this mission but I'm pretty sure that's how it went.

there are two helicopters in the area, one was shot down in the previous mission ignore that one. Help the second one that is trying to rescue Nagase. Thats the key in that mission. I used a SU-37

European release is now scheduled for 23 February (same day as Gran Turismo 4).

With a little luck I'll have AC4 next week, so that leaves me with 2 months to finish it. :D

*looks at ZOE2, Smuggler's Run 2 Warzones, Onimusha 2, Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow, Mark Of Kri and ICO still untouched*

uh-oh.

Just follow the tone at full speed and then mop up the enemy air. A F-22 does the job as does a F-18.

I completed the game about a week ago.

I don't know if I should pity you, or envy you. Mark of Kri, especially..woo. Great game.

Back on-topic, I get the overall gist that AC4>AC5. AC5 is my first game in the series, what was different/superior about 4?

^^

I'm still on the fence. I find myself wanting to play AC5 much less than AC4. Some of the multi-objective missions can be annoying if you die towards the end.

The YES|NO sh!t is annoying and pulls me away from the action. Wingmen control doesn't seem to add a whole lot from a strategic stand point.

Yeah I agree with Brova, the story in Ace Combat IV was just beautiful while the story in AC5 feels forced. Also the short hand drawn cut scenes moved the story forward perfectly.

God the game was just beautiful.

AC5 has too much dialogue during battle and its hard to read/listen to it all during an intense battle. The music in AC5 is average too.

Mobius 1 > Blaze :P

It's quite fortunate that this thread was bumped, because I'm playing through AC5 at the moment. AWESOME AWESOME game.

My only real gripe so far is that takeoffs and landings could have been handled better. I'm glad they're in there, but there's hardly any chances to do so and it feels just tacked on.

Riskbreaker -

Once you located Nagase, head at full speed towards the Sea Goblin and take out the ground-based enemies, then turn your attention towards the enemy aircraft. I found that using SRAAM missiles were a great help. I used the F-15.

I complained when they switched from the drawn cut scenes. The artistic feel to it. The back story, the opening movie when the kid loses his family. It was a great hook from the beginning. I'm trying to come up with the most memorable mission in AC5 but most seem to pale in comparison to AC4. They should have utilized air to water combat more often. Everything else was more of the same; great in itself but now I need to complete GTA:SA. I still haven't touched Halo2 yet.

man I love Ace Combat 5. for me personnally, its the BEST game there is for Playstation2.

the CG story scenes ROCK. not overally impressive technically, but they're great overall and I like this much more than the storyboard scenes in AC4 which seemed to disconnect from the game.

I love taking out the ARKBIRD and the thing at the end of the game. I am glad that the B-1B and B-52 bombers are back. AC4 had Soviet Bear and Tu160 Blackjacks instead. only thing that seems to be missing from AV5 is the B2 Stealth (could be wrong though, havent seen all the alternate missions).

I LOVE ACE COMBAT 5....now all the series needs is ONLINE

yes there are alot of areas that need improvement...some things are annoying like the yes/no stuff and the overally whiney radio chatter.. and the flight model (or lack there of)...but its still by far the best Ace Combat yet. there are a few things that are better about AC4, but overall Im enjoying AC5 more.

Mmmbeef, Doom_Bringer, and EAJAPAN ...Thanks again for your help! It took awhile but I was able to defeat that mission.

Oh
Is it possible to save Chopper?

Yeah I agree that was really awesome! Dodging all those lasers and planes. Cool battle.

indeed it was. lasers and all.

btw. this picture of AC5 is pure SEX

EA-18G_single_2.jpg

even though it IS doctored up with highres and AA.

What about multi-player? Is that any different, besides some new crafts? Is there co-op now? Because I'm not about to get this for the seemingly disappointing single-player. Yet I'm still interested.

Depends on what each game encompasses. Namco did very well in exploiting the hardware. Considering they only had to do some poor (but many) ground textures and some uniform buildings, they were free to make the jets super sexy.

I'll have to disagree with Doom Bringer and state that Ace Combat 5 OST > Ace Combat 4 OST. As awesome as "Megalith" is, "The Unsung War" is slightly better and is one of the most beautiful pieces of game music I've ever heard. As far as missions are concerned..both games are pretty even. And yes, the Arkbird battle was bloody awesome, which would be even better if they included several more allied aircraft joining in the fight

Yes, but overall AC4 OST is much better. AC5 has some good tracks; 15 Scinfaxi, 36 Solitaire, 24 Demons of Razgriz, and 09 Naval Blockade. But the rest of the tracks are average.

While Ace Combat IV has: 05.Breaking Arrows, 06.Breaking Arrows 2, 12.Lifeline, 23.Stonehenge, 09.Farbanti, 10.The Northern Eye, and 10.The Northern Eye.

Overall AC4 OST wins ^_^

I don't know about that. In fact, the game has yet to 'wow' me graphically, but I've put little time into it.

Now, once they iron out the LOD on ground textures and have them look as good up close as they do from a far...

Watch out!

about what? OST or graphics? I have the OST for both games, AC5 had good music during the first few missions but the music went downhill from there.

The rain effects were awesome, the bloom lighting effects in a few mission looked great, taking down the Arkbird and SWOG was awesome.

The game ran at 60 FPS too (a majority of the time anyway :P) Only the explosions were lacking. Overall a great looking game.

The Ace Combat 5 OST is "out" :D

Aaugh, the last big blow-up-the-generator-in-the-tunnel mission is driving me insane. I blow up the generator thingy, go zooming down the tunnel past the captain, make a couple of turns, and hit this fricking gantry/staging thing. It's set up between two huge doors that are closing, on both sides. A pair of enemy fighters go by right beforehand, so if I blow them up, I can't see anything through the debris.

Four tries, and I either hit the doors, the wall, or the gantry.

Yeah that mission was very intense for me! Here is the trick to beating it:

Right after you blow the generator speed you your plane. Use R2, L2 to avoid Hamilton's missiles. The key is not slowing down and getting out of the tunnel at a high speed. You can't even blink at that part :P

Btw: don't take any damage before entering the tunnel

It took me 2 tries to get through the tunnel. First try I went into the tunnel too fast and hit a door. 2nd try I went in slower, wasted the generator in 2 passes, and then rocketed out the tunnel as fast as I could.

I think I used a F-35 or whatever. It is the plane that looks like the F-22 but smaller.

The storyline was really bugging me in the game. Its narrated from reporter dudes perspective and then inflight it is all from your perspective. They should have just picked one storyteller. Also, how does reporter dude know what is going on and how does he get around the map with the pilots?

Play Ace Combat IV it has a better story.

I took me at least 12 tries to beat that level because I was playing on Hard :\

Doh, now there's an idea. I keep trying to use the big/fast planes- the F/A 22 and the Berkut. I'll try it with the F-35...and go faster, as Doom said.

How do you acquire new planes in ACIV? Is it an evolving system like five's?

ACIV has a pure money system: beat missions > get money > buy planes :)

Btw after you beat the game try to unlock the Falken, it truly rocks :D

yeah I agree, money system works much better.

Falken rox! Fires lasers and all, cool fictional aircraft.

Anyone want to buy my flight stick for $45? I have no use for it since it's hard to use on my bed.

Also, I felt nostalgic when playing that recon mission. Reminded me Behind Enemy Lines with Hackmen and Wilson.

Falken has the best cockpit ever!!! I just turned on wide-screen mode yesterday and damn the game looks fantastic!

To Unlock the Falken, destroy hidden hangers in the following missions:

"FALKEN

In order to assemble the FALKEN, you need to collect 5 parts of the plane.
Any difficulty level is OK. The coordinates given are based on a 8 X 8
grid of the game map. X and Y coordinates start from the top left corner
grid as homepoint going right and down. For example, top left grid would
be (X1,Y1). Third box from the left, fourth box from the top would be
(X3, Y4), and so on.

The parts are located at:

Mission 12A
Fly towards the Northeast from the starting point along the river, when you
are near the hangar it will appear on radar. Where the river branches 3
ways, the hangar is located on the south bank of the Eastern branch.
Coordinate: (X6, Y5) bottom right corner of grid.

Mission 12B
Among the ground facilities after you destroyed all the radars. The hangar
is not easily identifiable, bomb all the ground targets.

Coordinate: (X2, Y5) top middle area of grid.

Mission 16A
Destroy the hangar in the middle Northwest part of the map near the command
center and airport.

Coordinate: (X3, Y2) near bottom left area of grid.

Mission 16B
Destroy the warehouse in the Northwest near the top branch of the river.

Coordinate: (X3, Y4) left side of grid.

Mission 27
In the area where the enemy facilities are concentrated. Located at a
left-turning bend. You should have more than enough time to clear all the
ground targets before the tunnel opens even during the first time through
the game, its easiest to just destroy all the ground objects you can target
before engaging the planes. If you have not cleared the game, it is
recommended that you get the part your first time through because after
you acquire the part, you still need to fly through a very annoying tunnel
to complete the mission, with high potential to mess up towards the end -
this is not one of the missions you want to do over and over again.

Coordinate: (X4, Y6) near middle of grid.

Clearing Expert Mode with the FALKEN will unlock its SP color.

Note.
An easy strategy to get the parts:

FALKEN parts can be acquired in any difficulty level, so enter the mission
in VERY EASY mode to give yourself 99 missiles and full special attack
capabilities. Follow the FAQ's directions to the approximate designated area,
destroy ALL ground targets and you will be sure to get the part. If time
allows, destroy all ground targets on the entire map, it shouldn't pose much
of a problem in Very Easy, except clearing the tunnel in M27."
