The poster makes some interesting points; however, some of his math is off, so you obviously have to take stuff like this with a grain of salt. I found this comment from Carmack interesting, though:

"The only comment I feel confident making at the moment is that software development will be much easier on the Microsoft platform because of the processor decisions they made. There are pros and cons to the graphics strategies of each platform."

Edit: And after reading through that thread, HARDLY everyone in that thread is shitting on the original poster.

Maybe you should also mention the source of that supposed Carmack 'quote', and the context in which it appeared.

A couple days after E3, I emailed John Carmack asking him about next-gen consoles, and this what he replied:

He's talking about the PS3, not Revolution.

P.S: Using an BugMeNot account.

whats his email address

This was in response to another B3D poster, who wondered why Activision was complaining about the difficulty of developing for the PS3 when Epic seemed to be having no trouble and Game Informer had supposedly reported that John Carmack was jumping on the PS3 bandwagon as well.

So basically, we're looking at a guy who first quotes an Activision 'source' (whose credentials seem to be in some serious doubt) about the supposed difficulty of developing the PS3, then when someone else in the thread says that Carmack seemed positive about developing for the system in an interview, quotes from his supposed personal email correspondence with Carmack to 'prove' that this isn't the case.

I don't know about what this guy is saying is true, but he is highly regarded on those forums

Very true, but we also normally don't spout of random nonsense unless under heavy chemical influences... ;)
I hope for the sake of the project that guy's working on, that the chemical influence is also the case in his situation.

it might take say 5 cycles (arbitrary for examples sake) to actually execute the jump on condition command... during which time the dual issue SPE has begun processing on the next 10 instructions (assuming no dependancy issues). The result of the jump on condition comes in and eh voila - all those instructions (1-10) are suddenly WRONG... we don't need them to execute any more.... here comes a NICE flush of the **bleep**... removing ALL the new code and returning to the state BEFORE the read ahead was done. It then starts reading from instruction 11 - 21 and execution continues.

Dude, I just finished my C++ Advanced course and if his only solution is to flush the pipe because of a conditional branch, then this programmer should be sacked. There are alternatives to this problem.

1. Fuck Deadmeat
2. Check your sources

This is all coming from a X360 developer, so claims of bias, etc. = shove them up your ass.

Two things...

Just so you know, Deadmeat was a poster on here many years ago who did nothing but trash the ps2's hardware(this was before it came out) using little more than pure bullshit to argue his case. He regularly came up with absurd numbers and frequently got swatted down by people who actually had a clue. This post was his pinnacle and was followed by a then-huge number of posts just to keep the humiliation alive.

klee: Don't ever multiline again.

Ok, smart guys. All of you can stop fucking PMing me just because I made a post after bishoptl's lock. I'm just saying who Deadmeat was since many didn't know. Anyone who wants to read more out of that can fuck off. The only reason I'm not unlocking this thread is because I don't give a shit. :P
