Well we constantly getting documentaries about Adolf Hitler non stop, not to mention people keep shouting HITLER when someone disagrees on something. Perhaps the constant chatter made the name popular regardless of the actual history.

Apparently his parents weren't aware of the full details at that time, and Namibia was once a German colony, so german names aren't uncommon.

Most of the time, he doesn't need to use his full name anyway, so he never bothered to change it.

Besides, only crazies would think he was a Nazi.

My impression is that there is an understanding that Hitler was a powerful man of some importance among the general populace in these areas. However, I don't think most of these people actually know who Hitler truly was and why he is important figure in history. I don't doubt that the western fixation on him may have played a role.

Kind of like how some younger Russians idolize and revere Stalin. I doubt that most would honestly support the man and what he stood for in life; yet they currently see him as a figure that represents strength. He exists as a symbol beyond the realm of public consciousness as the lines of history blur and people begin to forget who he actually was and what he represents.

It is wild how different public perception is in these areas. There are also people in Cambodia who revere and pray to Pol Pot despite what he and the Khmer Rouge did to their own people. It's also interesting because Pol pot was also anti-religion and persecuted religious groups, yet these people ask for his spirit's blessing.

I would be surprised if he actually supported the things the Nazi Hitler did. It does appear to be more cultural than ideological when it comes to names like these. It's German and strikes attention for instance.




Speaking of Namibia and genocide, have you guys ever heard of the Herero Genocide? German colonial forces practically wiped out the Herero and Nama people in Namibia in the early 20th century after a rebellion over German seizure of land. It's sad more people don't talk about it.
